No Weapon Switch, Cant See My Text, And Overflow

I have a few problems playing NS on STEAM, and while I have seen them referanced in other threads they usually are not fully answered and among many other comments.

First of all, just recently I have had the trouble of not being able to switch weapons at all. If I pick up a weapon, i cant change out of it. Luckily I discovered that I can use my mousewheel to switch, but only mousewheelup for some reason (could it be because that is the only default command?). When I try to use the number keys to switch (as per default settings) the gun I currently have just reappears and reloads, but the reload is only the animation, not an actual reload. I had been able to play normally, but just recently this began to happen all the time (like just today), no matter what server I join (via STEAM).

Also, whenever this problem occurs, I cannot see my text, either regular (say) or team (tsay). I havent had any luck when asking other players in the server if they can see the text, nor does any command appear in the console. Also, just typing "say (whatever)" in console does not work. I am not sure if voice works or not, I dont think it does for me but thats because I use ventrilo which messes up the HL voicecomm usually (i primarily play DoD, I'm in CAL, so I know whats up). Looking at my config, I am noticing that the text commands for NS are "messagemode" and "messagemode2", not the "say" and "tsay" that I am used to in other HL mods...could this be a problem?

Also I sometimes get the "Reliable Channel Overflow" error...usually I can rejoin a few times or find another server and its fine, but i would like to be able to read my console without all "Unknown Command: ex_maxerrordistance" messages

My Specs:
P4 2.53GHz running WinXP SP2
512mb DDR
GeForce 4 Ti4600 (MSI) with detonator 52.70 drivers
Audigy 2 sound
I run NS off of a HL client, in Open_GL 1280x1024

Are you running the beta 2.0 installer for steam? If so i suggest you wait for 3.0 which will have FULL steam support.

the "reliable channel overflow" is from the administrator of the server putting too much text in the motds (or having multiple motd files on diff mods that have too much text in them)

also steam dont like windows xp no matter if all updates are installed or none, fresh copy or old it just dont like it so i went to windows 2000 and it works fine.

No, STEAM works just fine, I even run Battlegrounds (another 3rd party mod) with no errors like this at all. STEAM likes WinXP as much as a program can, at least I have no problem with it, just the NS 2.0.

Another thing that works is deleting and reinstalling the autoexec file. If you have one.

I had the same problem. Go onto the tech support forums and read the first post. It telles you how to fix overflow errors, which will also fix your weapon switch problem.

Open notepad and create a new file. Paste this into the first line of the file :

    alias "ex_maxerrordistance" ""

    (all the qoutes)

    save it as userconfig.cfg.

Or download the file I included (which is a pre-made userconfig.cfg) and save it into your half-lafe/ns directory. Hope it works 4 u.
