The reason there are no darker maps is the Mapping Guildlines request it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Besides, the Marines Flashlight sucks, and the Kharra have no way of lighting up darker areas. So darker areas while may add tension and atmosphere, just end up fustrating players.

not to mention the people with terrible monitors like me already have the bright maps pretty effing dark, even with everything cranked

Only if Marines can get foglights. Or get huge searchlights.

Lower your gamma if you want "tension and atmosphere." Not seeing other players isn't fun.

Can the Flashlight's surface area be made bigger?
I was just using it and the Light it produces is such a small area.

not to mention the flashlight also causes your marine model to be illuminated

I think its plenty dark already. And the flaslight is a feature of Half-Life that isn't easily improved.

Actually, the flashlight isn't bad if you're in a group of people and you're somewhere dark, like the road from Marine Start to Maintnance in ns_Hera. Since your model lights up and produces a ring of illumination around you, everyone just turn on the flashlight and any skulks trying to attack will be illuminated when they get too close. Or whatever.

    The flashlight sucks. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> I'm sorry I tried to defend it.

I've lowered my screen brightness lately when playing NS. It makes all the difference. Now if only I could remember to squint more often in darker passages and vents...

Well, I used to play with "normal" brightness and gamma (meaning the slider was NOT all the way to the right, but somewhere in the middle), but while it would have been fun, it just sucked getting owned by random aliens and crap coming out of places I couldn't see, or not even being able to see my teammates. So I had to ramp it up like everybody else (now if everybody ELSE didn't ramp it up we'd be fine, but that's not gonna happen).

And no, I never fool with those third party gamma tools and whatnot, that is going WAY overboard.

Personally I don't like darker maps, or dark places in maps, whether I'm a marine or alien.

i play with standard gamma value
yes, it doesnt help me, but it adds atmosphere (imho)
but there were times when i had high gamma, too <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

If you're playing on steam (using the NS 2.0 steam installer somewhere in open beta right now), then there's a program called "resetgamma.exe." It's meant as a utility to reset your gamma if your game crashes, but I perfer to alt-tab out of the game and use resetgamma after every map load. It makes it darker than usual.

the flashlight would be more effective if it also showed up on other players screens where it was shown.

that way a single marine could use his flashlight in dark areas and spot aliens for other ppl

right now the spot of light you see only shows up on your screen, something i never understood.

    bert.

Should add some sort of nvg to marines. Not that low powered firefly-behind-glass thingy.
