Well TMLD!, there is no official release date at the moment but according to the men in charge and their lackeys it's getting extremely close.  Give them some time to get everything just right, doesn't seem like the wait will be much longer.  Though, I can guarantee it will be well worth it.  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

[P.s. asking for release dates is frowned upon, so don't expect a warm reception.]

Uh-oh... I feel this topic is gonna become a flamefest soon... as for this week... erm... where did you hear that? When they say RC8 being released this week, that's a Release Candidate. It's POSSIBLE it could be the release version. It's an internal version they test.

Don't hold your breath. There are still major changes in the latest log, and major changes are a potent source for new issues. Expect a release once the logs get short and trivial.

I would think they need to thouroghly test destroyable resource nodes things.

The blatent answer is "No", but my guess would be 2-8 weeks from now.

NS's release will be preceded by a one-week PR blitz, including a trailer and likely the manual, at most major sites (such as PHL).  When you see that happen, you can be sure that NS is nigh.

Welcome to the forums, TMLD.  (:

Wahoo, manual first. Okay I knew it was coming but still, yay.

If there are no bugs or issues that need to be addressed, then there will be a release soon. Duh.
  • QuietusQuietus Join Date: 2002-03-13 Member: 313Members
I really don't think a PR blitz is needed. Most sites have been promoting NS a lot lately already, and nothing would bring more and more people than the actual release. That's just my opinion anyway..
  • RamsesRamses Join Date: 2002-05-21 Member: 642Members
    I think you're wrong, Quietus.
Yes, it's right that there is already quite a lot of PR, but a final PR-blitz (still wonder about this word) will bring NS the attention it deserves. At this moment, MonsE just tries to make NS more popular, but with his PR-blitz, he actually want to get all those people really euphoric(?) and impatient.
They shouldn't only KNOW about NS, they should WANT it!

A PR-blitz will throw this thing called NS around to all of the major places gamers go.  While it's fairly popular right now.. it's been in work for around 2 years (to my understanding) and I've only heard about it a couple weeks ago.  We want as many players as we can get- and there is still a large quantity of fish cluelessly swimming about the aquarium.

Some of the major things that are already being done/will be done is a test build sent out to some larger sites so they can perform previews on them, which is always good <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
Also, a trailer has been made to promote the various aspects of NS, and show off the professionalism and just shows how kick ### it is. Moving things in game show so much more than a screenshot has in the past.
This can only bring in hordes of more people, it gets everyone physced up for when we do release it. Not "Oh, NS is released, what is that?" <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Of course they could hold the pr week after they have released NS.

Disagree.  First impressions are EVERYTHING... if someone installs NS and goes to look for a game, and can't find any servers with people in them (not likely, but it's a hypothetical situation) - or can't find any servers with SPACE in them (we can only hope&#33<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> - that was their first impression:  not being able to play. It's irrational, but that's how the human brain works.  I know, because I tried out America's Army the night it released, and 2 weeks later uninstalled it because I hadn't been able to find an open server, and had no real pull to look again.

By having this "PR blitz" (blitz meaning an overwhelming assault of something, be it football players rushing a QB or MonsE spamming PHL and GameSpot with NS goodies), Flayra is hoping to get as many people to download it RIGHT AWAY as possible - *especially* including server admins, who need to be convinced that running an NS server is worth their time/CPU power.

    very true Coil
    yet you forget one thing

we already have a ton of servers (we love your MonsE)

    ahh, also one other thing
does any one know if the preview vid is going to be taken at high reseloution?
alot of the vids released by the Team as well as alot of vids released by alot of other mods tend to be very low reseloution and almost not worth the DL some times (this is sorta a suggestion)

The people who don't see the logic behind a week of major PR are just being impatient, arguing with them is like trying to convince a hungry lion he shouldn't eat.
  • RadiocageRadiocage Join Date: 2002-09-30 Member: 1381Members
    NO! PUT IT DOWN!

    It's just his opinion.

If you burn people for opinions, then you should get burned!
  • QuietusQuietus Join Date: 2002-03-13 Member: 313Members
Release a trailer, announce a release date, and release. A week of previews is not important to a large group of people that just want to play. Meh..
  • coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Yes, well, we already know *you* all will play.  It's everyone else in the world we're trying to grab.

It's not like they're going to finish it and then hold onto the code for a week while they PR it.  Flayra will reach a point in coding when he'll turn to MonsE and say "MonsieurEvil.... it is time.  Release the floodgates."  As Flayra finishes his evil machinations from his subterranean lair, MonsieurEvil will spread the gospel of NS across the planet, captivating audiences that don't even realize the magnitude of what they're being drawn into... culminating finally in THE RELEASE OF NATURAL SELECTION VERSION 1.0!!!!!!!!![/reverb]

Er... sorry.  That got a bit out of hand.

Well.. if everyone told 2 friends to tell 2 more friends about the release of NS and they should download it and play it, I think we could reach the whole world that way.
I would trust the word of a friend over the word of this PR-Blitz, but the blitz would probably spread the word alittle faster  <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

    1. The trailer movie should be in development right now.  I dont understand why you would wait to make it unless there is some kind of total model remake planned.  Even if there was some kind of big change that might come up, it would be easy enough to go back and change it. (by you, i mean the dev team)

    2.  A massive pr release should include the release of NS(i hate hype anyway.  I think things should be able to speak for themselves, but my opinion in this area isnt going to change anything).  Yeah yeah, I'm just a n00b who wants to get his hands on the game. Whatever.

A massive pr release would be more effective if along with the hype came a down load link at the end to back it up.  Otherwise it is just hype.
