Flayra and the team have been considering a very important point throughout development of Natural Selection: balancing realism and fun. To that end:
1) There is no locational damage in NS. It's frustrating to get headshotted from out of nowhere - and even worse when it's by some hack with an aimbot.
2) Gun accuracy is set for each weapon to balance gameplay, not to be realistic. All guns have a fire cone; some are larger than others. For instance, the HMG's very large fire cone (comparatively) means that a Skulk - which should by no means be engaging an HMG-equipped marine head-on - at least has a chance to escape. __
As for the models... honestly, I'm going to pretend you didn't say CS's models are better than NS's, because you're really just wrong. Yes, I know it's an opinion, and you're entitled to it... but I'll wait till you see them in-game, animated, and then we'll see. I think you'll change your mind the first time you see a level five galloping down a corridor towards you.
It's not that I think they are bad quality, they (esspecially the heavy armor. come-on, glowing blue eyes?) just seem corny. I am also not a big fan of the shotgun skin either.
__
also, does the 'no locational damage' have anything to do with the fact that skulks only come up to the knee? Im not exactly sure how they normally fight. Do they usually jump at people or do they almost always xenocide?
Locational damage does not need to be nearly as extreme as it is in CS. But at least make the damage taken to the foot or hand less then damage to the head.

don't post 2x in a row (use edit its forum etiquite(SP?))
as for what you said, I sorta don't think that that program worked exactly right (trust me one MP5 bulet to the leg WILL NOT take you down)
a posible explanation is that the comp got confuzed by you getting hit a few times by diff guns, either way that program don't work (I have played enough CS to know that the DMG is very precise)
oh well, I honestly think that CS used to be an exelent mod, however it seems to only have gone downhill, and I realy just dislike the game (primarily the comunity) now
Thansal trust me i have seen before me millions on times examples of totally random gun damage, MP5 seems to be the worst of all the guns. i personally have shot ppl in the legs with tmp with 2 or 3 bullets and they die (playin lan with my buddy and we tested all the guns. totally random)
also 2 posts in a row should be ok since they were different subjects.
also i have played CS since the very day it came out (Beta 1) so i have loads of experience and have seen all the Bullspit first hand more than i care to explain. it seems after VALVe got involved after beta 7 CS was ALL downhill from there. CS to me is like an arcade game, with no point other than to kill the other guy and have the highest score. so much of it is luck based, random headshots were the worst thing to be introduced to gaming since the virtual boy (LOL). at least online gaming.
anyways i could go on a huge rant about how much CS sucks for hours, so dont get me started! lol. the sad thing is i still play it today but only when i have 2 or 3 buddies on my team to cover my ### and we ALWAYS work together (usualling owning in the process).
Thansel, the community issue isnt true. You just have to find yourself a strong clan server.
If you just pic a random public server then yes, you will have just about the whole server full of n00bs and people who care about nothing but their own score, but if you can find a clan server you will get to know people which makes gameplay better in just about every way.
--edit: ok, maybe it would have been better to say "The community issue isnt always true."--

I've seen the CS boards... I've got no desire to *ever* post there. Yes, clans are a better way to play CS. The same will probably be true of NS, frankly. However, I think NS has a better chance of a generally better game on the pubs.

oh, yes I KNOW that Cs can be very fun (lol the Sysadmin for the CS program at my school plays ;D)
and yes, I know that you have to find a good server (I will not say clan server b/c there are alot of toolish clans out there)
but again, there are just obceane amounts of servers, and filtering through to the good ones just is not my idea of fun
and most of those servers are also filled with tool (I just hate the fn comunity, I stay around boards like this b/c the comunity is great)
and froggy, the general idea is that if you are making a second post right after another, it is just generaly accepted to put em as one, ats all (and alot of ppl will flame you if you don't, this was moe of a warning than anything else)
thx for the feedback! i think the best argument mentioned is, that cs hasn't got really a lot of weapons! ppl only use 5 or so. (ak, colt, awp, deagle, gren) the rest is useless.
i still remember the big CS update! WITH NEW WEAPONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! and what did i get? those fu****' dual elites (you can't even hit the enemy when he's 2 metres away) the five-seven (same) and the hk-ump (that i never really used, perhaps 30 times in all the years!
when I still played it, I used only the USP, 5-7, P228, Elites, and the P90 (and once I got 29 knife kills ) But thats just how l33t i was.
hey klauskalle about you saying the ump is useless? thats my favorite gun! the ump + usp combo is the best. you can soften them up with the ump and then go close range with the usp for the kill. altho since i started playing CS in the last little while (first game since 1.4) i find in 1.5 they took out alot of the umps power.
Now in defense of public CS servers, it can be fun when your team clicks. Or even if just you and another player click. Unfortunately, that's not a strong defense. It seems that teamwork runs contrary to what most of the people there seem to be looking for.
I remember one time me and another guy were actually working together. Neither one of us had "1337 skillz" but we were working together and dominating the server. But did anyone else try to join in the fun? Nope. Not a one.
We ended up getting kicked and banned. Why? We liked walking a lot as we moved around the map clearing rooms and covering each other. We got kicked for taking too long to die. Never mind that our team usually won, we just took too long. It was fun while it lasted though.
I tried to get into clan play, but I either wasn't "1337" enough or the clan had some kind of military fetish. I don't like military fetishes. It's a game for crying out loud. I'll listen to the guy in charge, but I ain't making it a point to call him "sir" in a damn video game.
Ah well. Now to sit back and wait for NS so I can throw CS off of my hard drive forever. And hell, even if NS takes another year to come out, I'll still be hanging around for this community.

Okay, so actually that was pretty fun to write. But you get the idea.
At the risk of getting this thread locked, I'll toss my 2 cents in: I love CS, I think its a fantastic game. I also hesitate to compare NS to CS, the only thing they share is the half-life engine. Do people compare Deus Ex to Jedi Knight(I think they both used the quake 2/3 engine, if not, I hope you still get the point)? I think CS caters to a different crowd than NS will as others have mentioned, and yes the worst part about CS is often the people playing it. I remember back in high school when my friends and I were big into GoldenEye on the N64. Then perfect dark came out which was essentially a superior version of GoldenEye in the future. I found that a lot of my friends that weren't big in to gaming, but liked GoldenEye, did not like perfect dark because it was too futuristic. Part of CS's appeal is its "realism", I know that taking a headshot from a wild shooter is frustrating, but I can't believe that real gunfights of this nature are like the movies with terrorists shooting hundreds of bullets at the heros without mortally wounding them. As for the balance of the guns in CS, yes some are better than others, but I'd chalk that up to "realism" as the american army swears by m4's and every other army with less funds swears by AK's. They're just good guns. Personally I stay away from them when playing, pump shotguns, pop gun pistols (p228), and harmless smg's (mac10, tmp) are my favorites just for the challenge. I prefer having an even "kill/death ratio" with my limited weapon selection than the "never die" scores I can rack up with the better guns...
Well I suppose thats enough rant, you can lock it up now.
Been looking around the Natural Selction site for around a month or so and ive been almost obsessed with looking at every nook and crany of it as soon as it was shown to me.
So i come to this list of posts on the forum and im kinda shocked, you guys seem to give no credit to many of the other mod (manly CS) becuase the community has been flooded with every n00b that could possibly join and for some reason you think that NS will be diffrent.
It wont. Well it wont as long as the aliens are enough DM style as ive heard to keep the n00bs interested. If not the game will make it about as far as Firearms did, which while not perfect, i feel has been one of the more skilled mod to date.
Well NS seems like it will rule all that came before but i think that it may be swamped with the n00bs just like the rest and then will you still feel its the best game?
die n00bs die
THE SCAPEGOAT.
oh and by the way i never played NS obviously so i would be a n00b to, but i feel there is diffrence between n00b and New Player. The former being a kill all never learn more then the biggest gun, and the later wanting to actually bring something to the game even if he doesn't have the skills to do so.
i think NS will be (after some time) be as famous as CS! it's just easily to see, that the devs break limits. NS must be the first FPS with RTS-elements, where teamplay doesn't stand on second place, no it stands on first place!
but it's hard to say so much without even having played it.

Quote (The Scapegoat @ Oct. 06 2002,09:24)

So i come to this list of posts on the forum and im kinda shocked, you guys seem to give no credit to many of the other mod (manly CS) becuase the community has been flooded with every n00b that could possibly join and for some reason you think that NS will be diffrent.

Well, first off we don't make a habit of discussing other mods, though we have many times mentioned CS since it's the most played MOD for HL right now. However, I've been here only a couple weeks and I've seen enough posts and threads that I would have to disagree with you saying no one here expects llamas and "n00bs" to play NS.
The general feel that I get is that llamas (people who think they're god and play for themselves) won't have any reason to be on the marines; since running off by yourself will only end in your termination. If they play aliens and are good at killing lots of marines by themselves then they become a valuable asset to the team.
Noobs on the other hand (as you describe them only wanting the biggest gun and not looking to learn much) won't really have a place. The marines won't get the biggest/baddest gun until later in the game when the commander has researched it AND dropped it for them. The aliens need all three hives up and running, plus enough RPs to evolve into the big-bad onos. There's far too much time between those events that the player will have to do something else- either be bored or learn how to play the real game.
So, it appears to me that llamas and noobs will either not find NS interesting or come to grips with the dynamics of the game and become really good players.
scapegoat im pretty sure your average CS n00b doesnt have the crainial capacity to understand a complex game like NS. most of them will try it for the first few days and say "this game sux, me no understand, me no buy gun"
thus most of the n00bies will be filtered out due to the fact that NS actually requires a little brainwork instead of just shooting the T/CT.

Edit: Hahaha Vyvn! Best Post Ever!!

THE SCAPEGOAT.
oh and by the way i never played NS obviously so i would be a n00b to, but i feel there is diffrence between n00b and New Player. The former being a kill all never learn more then the biggest gun, and the later wanting to actually bring something to the game even if he doesn't have the skills to do so.
but it's hard to say so much without even having played it.
So, it appears to me that llamas and noobs will either not find NS interesting or come to grips with the dynamics of the game and become really good players.
thus most of the n00bies will be filtered out due to the fact that NS actually requires a little brainwork instead of just shooting the T/CT.
