Depends. I have been reading about different things about each driver. One of them runs too hot, yadda yadda. I used the cat v 3.8 for my 9800pro and never updated past that. Just wondering about other users setups because my 3dmark scores are a tad bit lower than my ones that I had with the 9800 pro and I'm trying to figure out why. Drivers may be the issue.
I am a performance junkie versus quality junkie and have been reading that the DNA drivers make ATI cards pump out more. I've never tried these drivers but I'm about to give it a go.
wow you must be hella rich if 9800 pro wasn't ENOUGH for you so you UPgraded from it =P also, I thought 3.1 was the lastest version, what's this 3.8 of which you speak? :> I guess I'm out of the loop... anyway I use 3.1 with my 9600 pro all in wonder and it keeps me happy. 120fps on 1600x1200 32 bit res in NS is enough for me.
Funny, half life is capped at 100 FPS so how is it you get 120?
I'm wealthy enough to buy most what I want yes. Not trying to brag or nothing. Plus my friend fried his video card and he's tight on money so I figured I'd help him out and throw him the 9800Pro and get the XT.

Heheh, I work extremely hard for what I have. Why do people always ask for handouts? It reminds me of the bums that come up to my car in downtown atlanta. "Got any spare change mister?"
Yes I do. But it is mine. Clean yourself up and get a job you bum. My money doesn't come free.
(that is what I tell them, lol, I'm not saying that to you Nec)

at any rate, shush and stop nitpicking, acuzza my point stands that my HL framerate couldn't be any better =P though I bought the 9600 intending to upgrade it as soon as the 9800s get cheaper, if I need better game performance in a few months anyway...
Heheh, the 9800s ARE cheaper. Considering I bought my 9800pro in the middle of oct. 03 for $364, and now they are selling for $264. I looked at my 9800XT on the shelf today with its blinking security alarm and everything along with a $499.99 price tag, and thought to myself, "Damn. This thing costs more than my monthly car payment."
Then the cashier rang it up at $469.99, and gave me a reciept for a $20 rebate. I was happy for a moment. Hell, as soon as I'm done twinking this thing I'll be even more happy.
wow, that fan looks like it could cool a nuclear power plant <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
and, see! I KNEW it wasn't my imagination about the fps... :> did some more messing around, and it's odd, at 1280x1024 my fps caps at SIXTY even with those two settings enabled, but when I switch back to 1600x1200, I get a good framerate again... not wanting to threadjack tho.
Your fps most likely caps at 60 at that resolution because windows has deemed it necessary to run your monitor at 60Hz on that resolution so as to not strain the monitor. There is a way to change what the default caps of Hz are. Its odd though that the default at 1600x1200 is higher than the default at 1280x1024.

This thing is almost as heavy as a power supply.
Read. Enjoy. Install Omega's 3.10. Enjoy.
And Steam-HL is not limited to 100 fps, "developer 1" and "fps_max 9999" in console for fps goodness.
