The worst part about this is, I have made references to Evangelion in front of my family members and told them it was good. Now, since they're too lazy to see the original version and I don't feel like lending any of these slobs my collection, they're going to see this movie... and wonder what the hell's wrong with me for enjoying the series.
The second worst part is the fact that I'm going to involuntarily see this thing in theatres (for the day or so it's running) whether I want to or not simply out of... well, you know how it is when you find your favorite anime series.
Like I said before, I think an Evangelion subseries or even movie about America would be great, as long as you don't inexplicably make clones of the Japanese pilots and change the setting. Think about it, you could have new characters, different style, and maybe some badass American mechs similar to the ones from the BattleTech universe (for the unwashed masses, see the attached pic)...
I thought the concept are was ok for the Evas and cities (there cities duh), but the people concept are is terrible. It doesn't make sense that they're changing the names. They're not that hard to pronounce, and besides, it's not like the names wouldn't ever be pronounced in the movie. Ugh...

He's essentially bought up every single Regions license for both the manga and anime versions of Gunmm/Battle Angel Alita, so America is thus far the only country to recieve Alita on DVD and Alita in manga format.
And he's been sitting on the license for a few years.
Even if the 2nd film is about motorball, it will mean we will never reach some of the more masterful pieces of the manga... yeah thanks James.
Name me one film based on a game/series/film/book/etc in the last 20 years where they stay 100% true to the original and I'll shut my face.
ooh... didn't know about him buying up the rights =o
It obviously won't be 100% true, almost nothing ever is but he could maybe actually do better than the merely 'ok' anime of it that's out. Sure the manga will always be better but not only is that because it's irreplacibly the first but also because things such as writing and even mangas still leave gaps for the readers to fill with their imagination, like the sound of the characters voice and the like.
I've only sort of skimmed through the previous posts, so forgive me if this has already been covered.
From what I can see, there are 2 main issues here: Changing the Names: This is fairly common when adapting a movie to a new audience, and rarely causes much trouble. For example, many of the names were changed between the English and Chinese versions of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; yet it still won numerous awards and critical acclaim. The Characters look Old: This is just concept art of what the plug suits are going to look like. I’m pretty sure this movie is going to be only part CG and part Live Action, so an actor will be playing Asuka, Rei, and Misato. They don’t know what the actor is going to look like, so they have a stand in model that helps them refine the CONCEPTS.
All in all, I’m quite impressed with some of the stuff I see here. Is it going to be the NGE we all know and love? No. Will it still be a terrible movie? Probably, movie adaptations never work. Will I still go and see it and pay my 8 bucks? Yes.
The thought occurs to me: what on Earth do they need concept art for when they've got the anime? Screencaps? The ample pictures of the characters floating around? Animation cels? Why do they need to draw new and terrible pictures when there are plenty of old, good ones?
I'd stick to the anime instead.... (and no don't tell me that they're not gonna force me to buy it, I know that already)
Asuka looks prehistoric-ish, and Rei just isn't Rei without teh blue hair....
The ony things that are good are the new mech designs though....they somehow look much more organic and stuff

I do like the mech/city designs though they're not too far different from the existing ones anyways =3

Do they have any of the origional artists working with Weta Workshop?
Like in LOTR they had those 2 guys (cant remember names) who had done all the famous Tolkien illustrations of the past and they were lead desingers in helping to make sure the other designs from Weta looked like what they were supposed to be.
