ASUS Radeon 9800 XT 256 DDR
As you might read from the title, I was wondering how well Radeon 9800 XT would work with NS?
I know it's a great video card, but I've heard stories of people buying 9600 Pro, getting utterly dissapointed by frequent FPS drops due to the old technology in the HL engine.

I have already purchased the card and all, but I just wanted to know wether I'm gonna get equally dissapointed or not.

I would really appreciate replies!

Well, I have a radeon 9800 Pro, and I drop FPS to crap, but then I can play a game like DoD, RTCW with no problems at all.. kind of wierd, I think i'll stop blaming my computer, and start blaming the engine

Most people I heard saying they have constant 100 fps say that have like a geforce 4 on a win98/2000 OS, And thats about the time HL was out, so probably thats what the engine is looking for, and not our new 1337 machines D:

I have no doubt the 9800XT will be able to handle H-L. You might not get 100% out of it, but you'll certainly get a boost unless you're already using a 9800 Pro or something. H-L is not anything to worry about. I'm getting 70-99 FPS (max) with a 1.7GHz/256 RAMBUS/GeForce 3 64Mb, so you should be able to get 99 easily with that card.

Well I bought a 9600xt and have experienced some problems with it, but after some test I've come to the conclusion that is was damaged and returned it to the dealers today. Often a radeon card using some good drivers and trueform off will work great but sometimes the new radeon doesn’t compute with hl. To be sure you can always get an nvidia geforce ti 4200 but a radeon is a much better buy if you want some tech for dx9.

btw, this might belong to the tech forum and maybe a better place to get some answers is a tech related forum like in Sweden: sweclockers

You might try 3rd party drivers for the card if HL is giving you problems, it might clear it up, might not.

    i get 99 fps on a geforce 4 mx440, so i don't see why you shouldn't get the same on the 9800XT.

it should look a lot better too with all the stuff built in to it.

Who to believe, triphase or S-Q?

Maybe I could, as elt says get liek Trueform and newest catalyst, and then recieve 30 fps?

When you say you get FPS drop to crap, how low and what are you doing?

ns is also very cpu intesive, so i think upgrading your processor/motherboard/ram could help improve performence as well.

Erm... no? HL is nearing 10 years old. Minimum requirements are something like a P1 200mhz and a 16meg graphics card. Either 8 or 16 I forget. So really it came out somewhere around the time GeForces just started hitting the market. Windows 2000 wouldnt have been out.

actually - the original half life you could run in software mode. So say you had nothing but a trident card with say - 2 megs of ram (A high performance card back in the day) - you could still run HL in low res on a Pentium non-mmx

All I can say is that if you get FPS below max with a 9800XT (assuming you run a decent system otherwise), you're either using the wrong or old drivers, or the card is configured badly or damaged. A friend of mine bought a 9600XT 256Mb and he had no problems whatsoever with H-L (the FPS was actually increased). I see no reason why the 9800 version would be any different.

10 years? Uhh, I'm not sure what measure of time you're using but last time I checked, HL came out in 97 or 98, not 1994.

I've got a p4 3.0ghz , 1024 meg ram and a radeon 9800 pro. I'm running at an almost constant 99 fps. Does that answer your question?

It's the newest HL patch (not Steam itself, that's just an auth system) that has problems with the Radeons. You may get FPS drops from time to time unexpectedly... but you'll get the same amount of drop if you're running ar 800x600, or 1600x1200 with 6xFSAA and 16x Aniso. I run with the latter, and it's *beautiful*, just so you know. With a 9800XT, you shouldn't have too many problems, even with an Intel chip.

Just remember... if you're getting framerates that are TOO low:
    ati_npatch 0
    ati_subdiv 0
    gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR

(Okay, that last one doesn't do much on the performance side, but it puts the game into high-quality trilinear filtering mode, which your card can easily handle and looks GREAT in NS... honestly, everyone with a card better than a TNT2 should be using it by default.)

You could have a TNT 2 and get a FPS rate above 30 with that system. It should run fine, you may not get 99 FPS but you should get well above 30 with that beast of a card.

I'm running on an AMD Athlon 2200+, 512 DDR Ram, and my newly aquired ASUS 9800XT. It runs like a mad man, handles any game. I can look into a turret farmed room with 1600x1200 with 6xFSAA and 16x Aniso and retain excellent frames. Use gl_linear_mipmap_linear too, it makes NS look amazing.

The ASUS bit is nice too, second fan, copper heatsink, S-Video, and great features.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

    What's 6xFSAA and 16x Aniso?

Well... I'm buying all of those things plus the Radeon in one go

My TNT 2 runs pretty good for NS at 1024x768. I rarely got fps drops. (I attribute those to Win ME needing a reboot.) I recently had to do the reinstall and have XP now (Waiting to get my copy of HL back so I can reinstall NS what timing... just as 3.0 comes out my comp goes down... heh) and I'm thinking about getting a new vid card as well.

Personally, I'm hoping to find the rare and elusive 9500 Pro. According to the benchmarks on www.tomshardware.com the 9500 pro was faster than any of the new 9600's! (Which is crap if you ask me.) But if I don't find that "old card" I'm going to grab a 9600 XT (it's cheaper and better than the Pro version)

Bang for the buck, the Geforce 4 Ti is the best one going, but you don't get that snazzy Direct X 9.0 feature set. (The only reason I didn't get one...)

    Oh well.

6xFSAA - Its a setting for the graphics card; Hes running at 6X on Anti-Aliasing
16x Aniso - Its another setting for the card; Hes running at 16X on Anisotropic Filtering.
