Question About A Hardware Buy...

ASUS Radeon 9800 XT 256 DDR
As you might read from the title, I was wondering how well Radeon 9800 XT would work with NS?
I know it's a great video card, but I've heard stories of people buying 9600 Pro, getting utterly dissapointed by frequent FPS drops due to the old technology in the HL engine.
I have already purchased the card and all, but I just wanted to know wether I'm gonna get equally dissapointed or not.
I would really appreciate replies!

PS: Didn't know where to put the thread, so please move it if it seems malplaced DS

Hehe, well the Swedish Mail Service is a bunch of lazy suckers, so it hasn't arrived yet, and I'm gonna sit here all weekend 1) longing for my precious card 2) Wishing I could the ****
EDIT: [offtopic] oh man I hate cencorship... I really thought Flayra was better than that =/ [/offtopic]
Most people I heard saying they have constant 100 fps say that have like a geforce 4 on a win98/2000 OS, And thats about the time HL was out, so probably thats what the engine is looking for, and not our new 1337 machines D:
btw, this might belong to the tech forum and maybe a better place to get some answers is a tech related forum like in Sweden: sweclockers
i get 99 fps on a geforce 4 mx440, so i don't see why you shouldn't get the same on the 9800XT.
it should look a lot better too with all the stuff built in to it.
Maybe I could, as elt says get liek Trueform and newest catalyst, and then recieve 30 fps?
When you say you get FPS drop to crap, how low and what are you doing?

Erm... no? HL is nearing 10 years old. Minimum requirements are something like a P1 200mhz and a 16meg graphics card. Either 8 or 16 I forget. So really it came out somewhere around the time GeForces just started hitting the market. Windows 2000 wouldnt have been out.
Man I feel old.

10 years? Uhh, I'm not sure what measure of time you're using but last time I checked, HL came out in 97 or 98, not 1994.
Abit's motherboard
Intel 2.6 MHz 800 MHz bus
512 MB 400 MHz bus
so, you guys think I'll get a decent FPS?
(like >35 FPS)
Just remember... if you're getting framerates that are TOO low:
ati_npatch 0
ati_subdiv 0
gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR
(Okay, that last one doesn't do much on the performance side, but it puts the game into high-quality trilinear filtering mode, which your card can easily handle and looks GREAT in NS... honestly, everyone with a card better than a TNT2 should be using it by default.)

You could have a TNT 2 and get a FPS rate above 30 with that system. It should run fine, you may not get 99 FPS but you should get well above 30 with that beast of a card.
The ASUS bit is nice too, second fan, copper heatsink, S-Video, and great features.
What's 6xFSAA and 16x Aniso?

Well... I'm buying all of those things plus the Radeon in one go
Personally, I'm hoping to find the rare and elusive 9500 Pro. According to the benchmarks on www.tomshardware.com the 9500 pro was faster than any of the new 9600's! (Which is crap if you ask me.) But if I don't find that "old card" I'm going to grab a 9600 XT (it's cheaper and better than the Pro version)
Bang for the buck, the Geforce 4 Ti is the best one going, but you don't get that snazzy Direct X 9.0 feature set. (The only reason I didn't get one...)
Oh well.
2.8g
512 pc-2700 ddr
800 bus speed
My computer is only about 5 months old
I don't have any clue why Its doing what its doing
Any suggestions ?
6xFSAA - Its a setting for the graphics card; Hes running at 6X on Anti-Aliasing
16x Aniso - Its another setting for the card; Hes running at 16X on Anisotropic Filtering.
