If by systems engineer you mean doing stuff such as CAD I would personally choose software. My dads spent the last 8 or so years looking for a(nother) job in the CAD market and JUST got one, so now I'm not going to have to pay out of state tuition when i transfer university anyways.
SYSTEMS! I plan on getting a system "engineer" job as they call it at markham hydro, Ive seen these gus "work". And by "work" I mean eat pizza and drink beer while playing NS on a huge screen.

As for which is better, unless you give me a job description for each I can't help. "Systems Engineer" gets bandied around all the time as a job title, even though a job's activities may be only barely related to it. As a certified systems engineer with 9 years on the job, I find no end of irritation over this fact.
