If by systems engineer you mean doing stuff such as CAD I would personally choose software. My dads spent the last 8 or so years looking for a(nother) job in the CAD market and JUST got one, so now I'm not going to have to pay out of state tuition when i transfer university anyways.

    First off, congrats!

As for which is better, unless you give me a job description for each I can't help. "Systems Engineer" gets bandied around all the time as a job title, even though a job's activities may be only barely related to it. As a certified systems engineer with 9 years on the job, I find no end of irritation over this fact.

Making sure that satelites can communicate with ground stations and evaluating pretty much every detail of the process. (cost, expected life, etc)

I am just not sure I want to work as a CodeMonkey(I mean software engineer) <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'm more of a hardware guy myself. Sounds great, and I hope you have fun doing it! It can be the most infuriating job on earth, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Congratulation man! The Systems Eng. position sounds like fun. Hope you enjoy it!

I'm tempted to run off w/ my MS and get a job, but I shouldn't... stupid grad school.
