<div class="IPBDescription">I dont understand why though</div> Ok, Ive been playing NS alot lately as most of us have <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> But ive been getting a lot of lag, especially with marines...

This apears to be happening when

1. lots of PCs on the screen
2. I get scanning as a marine

My ping is often 50-70...but when one of those 2 things happens, it jumps from 300-500 at times, making it very difficult with my ever changing Ping...

Now I could understand this if i had a crappy machine and 56k or a crappy net connection/isp I dont, heres my system specs

512mb DDR ram
2.1gig AMD Athlon
Geforce 4 128mb 8x
120gb harddrive
512kbs broadband

Is there anything I can do to get this lag down? I know theres all that Cl_rate n crap that can be edited, never tried it before, but it makes for hellish gaming when your ping jumps all over the place.

(other ppl seem to suffer too, although not as bad as me)

yeah i get the same problem, i know i'm on 56k but through won my ping sits happily around 200 but through steam it stays up at about 1000 occasionally dropping to 500ish for about 10 seconds at a time <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    my specs:

    2600+ athalon (2.1ghz)
    1024ddr RAM
    128mb geforce fx
56k provided by BT (cant get broadband here)
    180gig HD
    DX9

no idea why steam has this effect on my computer, any help/info about this problem would be appreciated.

    Cheers - Rhodri

I think this belongs to tech support... As for your problem, I have no idea what to do <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have the same problem. My ping is normally around 50 - 80 but when i'm in the middle of a combat my ping jumps to 400 - 500.

I thought is was the only one having this problem but apparently i'm not... <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well what I see it's a server side bug that causes lag and a tech question yes <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Just wait ppl, it will get fixed.

Perhaps its a map issue. Since I have got 3.0 up and running, with the new maps - I have noticed considerably higher pings with certain maps. ie agora.

I think its cause they locked the rate command to 9999, whenever the needed bandwidth goes above that, your loss starts to shoot up, im probably wrong though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

how can we change that and what to change it too?
  • PorthosPorthos Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3083Members
ok, I had this EXACT problem, all I had to do was open up Steam and under options set my rate up to Cable/DSL. It's seems that it put my connection to 28.8 modem by default, after I did this the game ran perfect.

Mine was also set to 28.8kbs but even by changing it i still lag like helll when i get in a battle situation. Its not that bad 1v1 but its when thers a large battle this screws me up..ping shoots from 50-90 to 500-1000. I dont know what it is but it never happened in 2.0 or beta 3.1 (not sure bout 3.1).

    One scenario that has happened:

3 friends and i went onos to finish off the rines but when i got to their base i just..lag...move..move..laaaag...*rine shoots* ..kersplat onos dead <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Is anyone else still getting this problem? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Thats odd, The only thing I can suggest is try going to <a href='http://www.dslreports.com/tools' target='_blank'>DSLreports</a> and running some tests and optimizations.

You could always close everything that is running while playing and this is just a beta and it will be fixed.

not that it's going to help in me saying so, but I have the same issues. I have a brand new spanking computer, all teched up and with an hl2 suggested video card. My ping is usually around 50... though when things clutter up in one area, it chops like a monkey. Goes up to 500+. Logically, this is from so much activity in one place, but it makes the game very difficult when it comes to team actions. Also, when you're an onos or anything trying to attack the marines, the game suddenly lagging so much makes it impossible to retreat, let alone kill anyone.

they locked cl_rate, not rate. and cl_rates max is 9999 anyways in HL. Try adding Net_graph 3 and pay attention to your choke when these things happen, it if shoots up then your rate is set too low and needs to be reset at a higher value (I currently have mine set to 9000). It also could be that your playing on a laggy server.
