Just wanted to come and say thanks. combat is so well suited for pubs, where its not as easy to get teams to work together. A good game of NS is still fun, but you can't beat the nonstop action and fun of combat.
Since combat, I've actually noticed more teamwork when playing regular NS. If people want to go in and rambo to kill things, they just go to combat. If they want a team game, they join NS.
Of course, there's still that aggrivating newb with 0 kills and 10 deaths who rambos off all the time and begs for HMGs.
Thumbs up for NS COMBAT !!!1111!!!eleven!!!1111!!1!1one
Just the almost no brainer action of justkilling without a commander and/or buildings is pretty fun
NS classic will still be the best one in my book.
Well, I've been playing Combat a lot, but that's mostly due to the fact that I've been playing Classic rampantly since 1.03, and Combat is so... Not been played since 1.03... And plus, Combat has the RPG style EXP system, which I love. As a matter of fact, it reminds me of WC3XP for CS, which, doubled with AMX Respawn plugin, can make CS almost fun. But after I've had my fill of combat I'll go to a heathy balance of both, and TS.

maybe i just play with the wrong people... im too often the lonely gorge webbing and healing the hive, the lonely rine welding cc and armory and mining the spawn. not to mention the whining and bitching if a server changes map from co_ to ns_ -_-
but combat IS better suited for pubs than regular ns, no doubt

I see no real difference myself. The level of teamwork needed it still high...its just slightly easier to coordinate and probably happens by chance on such small maps. Anyone else starting to hate marine stackers yet?
I'm extremely tired of 'rine stackers. Most pubs I've visited have about 6 people waiting in the 'rine entrance as soon as a new map starts. As you can guess, I tend to play aliens.... a LOT. On the few occasions that I do actually want to play as a 'rine I can't. I'd rather be playing the game than jerking off in the 'rine entrance waiting for a spot that likely won't come around for me so I state my standard curses and deroggatory statements and promptly join aliens AGAIN.
and AGAIN...
and YET AGAIN...
and the MOST annoying part of it all is that the 'rines are usually stacked not with a bunch of nubs but more often than not the 1337 regulars to the server. Now I'll be the first to admit that I absolutely LOVE playing as an Alien... I prefer it even... however when I repeatedly get stuck with the vast majority of nubs game after game with a kill disparity of 40 between me and the rest of my team only to lose miserably because we can't really do **** against 4 jp's + 4 ha's organized with an array of shotties hmgs and gls with 1 lvl 10 guy and a bunch of lvl 2 guys.
I just don't know why everyone has such an addictive anal fascination with joining the 'rine team. Is it easier to play as a 'rine? Too easy as an alien for the 1337 among us to be satisfied? I just don't get it.

For whatever reason, marines just seem more 'fun' to play for some reason. I haven't quite figured it out myself quite yet. I think it's got to do with the fact that as you progress as a marine, you get not just more powerful things, but 'different' things. Your playstyle changes constantly. From pecking with the LMG, to close combat with the shotgun, to flight with the jetpack, etc. Aliens seem to stagnate in combat. As the game goes on you get a little tougher, but thats about it.
Its the upgrade variety thats drawing people to marines so much.
I too prefer playing alien. Though I find when all the best players stack on rines and go JP +shotty/HMG, the best thing to do is go focus + cloak skulk, sit in the middle of corridors and bite them as they walk up. Gets them pretty worked up.

I find marines in combat pretty boring myself. Aliens are much, much more fun. Especially when you're still getting 1 bite kills on that same guy 3-4 minutes into the game because he's gone straight for a HMG.
If you want to get the most out of your combat game, pick weapons that will make you win.
As aliens, never stay skulk, never get cloaking, or hopefully you won't need to gorge and if you do go gorge then just heal up the hive on your way to a bigger lifeform
As a marine, only get the GL and Shotty, and chose the shotty over the GL in most area's, take the jetpack unless it's kestral.
These ways are generally the most satisfying way to play I've found.
Reason is this: Super skulks, while cool, lack the HP to finish off the game
Cloaking is useless for attacking, so it's a wasted skill point
GL is nice for killing the hive, and so is the shotgun, whereas the HMG is not. So while the HMG will kill all the aliens, it's terrible at actually killing the hive. Also, the shotgun can be just as effective as the HMG when used properly, and using the shotgun properly is immensely satisfying.

The natural selection marine takes on the hellish worlds of The Specialists...and Halflife!!
The NS marine gets his arse kicked by the 1337 h4x0ring agent.
I like combat for the reason that I dont care much about game objective.. I'm very team-play oriented player in NS classic, mostly playing comm as marine and I care strictly about team victory.. But in combat.. heal hive, weld cc? Who really cares, if game ends, another starts and its all the same.. it's just a combat for me, just DM style, I dont need cooperation, i dont need objectives, I just jump from marine and to marine with my superskulk in kestrel and kill them.. Or just rush whole game with xeno only skulk, nothing else just leap+xeno (was great with previous spawn times :-) I dont need to think much in this game, its so similar to CS, but faster.. (CS pub is in my eyes similar no-brain action, if you are good you can ignore team and just do whatever you like :-)..
In NS you feel great if your team wins, especially if its victory against odds and you made some turn over.. but in combat? Who really cares, people sometimes dont even notice who win..
the amount of times I've been hurtling round as a skulk on celerity chomping away at anything in my path only to have the suddenly end, and im sat in the ready room thinking who the hell won I was having fun . Combat is a great laugh for fast paced thrills, you don't have to rely on anyone. Most of the time as a marine on a pub the cam is trying to ram HA and a HMG down my throat, which isn't my style of play I prefer to bounce around my base on a jetpack with a shotty and a welder. and trying to convince him that I am crap with those wepaons is like trying to draw blood from a rock. I'ts not as bad as alien though cause you have more independance, and if it comes down to it and you really want a certain upgrade you can have a crack at getting the right tower. even if you have to build a hive to do it. Although it might not be the easiest thing to do.
How can I not love Combat when I've gotten yet more practice with my beloved GL? Sure, I've been missing a lot of Classic, which I love, but that's so I can actually be a bigger threat outside the comm chair (and without a GL).
Sure, there are issues, especially with players who now moan and moan and moan when the server changes to Classic. Or with arses who refuse any sort of teamwork in Combat (yeah, I'm big on the dm-y side too, but c'mon, just a LITTLE). And, of course, the hive healing bug, which is really hurting aliens (cuz, I mean, c'mon, who's gonna skulkavator you up?)
And, Forlorn, I think, for many of us, it's not about effectiveness or winning (though, even then, wouldn't you want an hmg or two on your team?), but rather, about practice and experimentation. Skulk practice, and lerk practice, for example, are great, because we get to work with the two low level classes. Heck, even GORGE practice is fun.
