In any of the maps, is using a ladder is required?

Ever seen a rhino climb a ladder?
The whole 'onos climbing ladders thing' is still bothering me. Are there any maps that have important areas only accessible by ladders? Would it be really hard or deface that map to add a ramp?

Would it be totally unreasonable to have the strongest and fastest (correct me if they are not the fastest) unit in the game take the long way?

NEarly all maps have ladders in some way shape or form throughout the map. Gameplay over realism, any alien can climb a ladder

I can't wait to watch Onos climb a ladder. That will make my day.

Yeah I guess we'll have to deal with that. Flayra has already done some amazing things with the Half Life engine.. we can't expect a full motion animation of a rhino-sized lvl 5 lumbering himself up a ladder thats 20% his girth

Are the ladders the only way to get to the place the ladder leads to? Are those areas the ladders lead to important enough that the onos NEEDS to be able to get there?

What I am basically asking is if the onos would be cut off from a major area of the map if it couldnt get up the ladders.

If so, how hard would it be/bad would it look if a ramp or cargo type elevator was added to allow the onos access.

lol, i can picture an onos climbing a ladder already

    Lets see...

Hera has ladders up to one hive, an Onos would need to go up whtm to kill marines up there, no room for a ramp.

Bast has a ladder up to the 'water hive', only other way is trhough the vents or marine spawn, straight up ladders, so no room for a ramp.

Caged has one hive room with ladders into both entrances of the hive and ladders out of another hive, no room for ramps/would look silly.

Nothing has ladders out of one hive, no room/.silly for ramps...should I go on?

EDIT: Comprox beat me to it, nevermind. Ignore me. Spit at me, and laugh. Gaaaahhhhh!!!!

    Ahem.

To answer your question, yes there are some (important) areas in the maps that are only accessable by ladder. For example, in ns_nothing, the "Great Viaduct" hive must be crawled out of by ladder or wall climbing.

There was orignally an elevator in this area, but r_speeds were too high for such a high-combat area. Cutting out the elevator, and replacing it with two ladders seemed to be the best option as far as detail cuts were concerned.

Here, a ladder-only area was forced by engine limits. In other maps, there's probably a few other places that are only accessable by ladder, and possibly simply by design.

It's really not a big deal though. Just like the skulk-doesn't-rotate-to-wall-surface issue, it will bug you if you sit and think about it, but when ingame it's not even slightly distracting to the average player.

IS there no way in a future version you would be able to add ladder animations?

Well, I believe that aligning the skulk to walls when wallclimbing is planned for v2, maybe they are thinking about this, I'm not sure.

I didn't think the half-life engine was capable of rotating players like that... I know the dod guys wanted to give players the ability to lean but couldn't manage it...

It's funny watching prone people climb ladders...

Didnt they manage to put leaning into Digital Paintball though? ..might be handy for the marines if it was ever implented into v2 of Natural Selection...?

Or maybe not? I dont know =D

Oh darn. I thought NS would be perfect but when closing to release many "bugs" are coming out(lvl1 and lvl5 issues) Im sad. Well it will be great mod still, maybe they fix them soon. When you wait something too much with great anticipation and everyone saying it will be heavenly, ofcourse NS can't match with imagination.

Digital Paintball mod does have leaning but I dont know if its models lean.
I hope that its possible to use a lvl5 as a lift.

Just because I like doing wacky in-game stuff. I keep trying to persuade my TFC clan to do the haaka in the nml with me (with all of us as HW's, or maybe as pyros so we can put on a fireworks display at the same time).

The ladder/ramp thing is up to the mapper. If the mapper is that concerned with aliens climbing up the ladder like that, he'll make room for ramps. That's all.

Honestly, I don't know if I've ever seen a level5 on a ladder. It's such a brief moment, and level5s are so infrequently seen.

On the idea of using a level5 as a lift - the Skulk and Lerk are one-man stacking machines. Gorge needs to get into a high vent? hop on top of a Skulk or Lerk, and they can lift you all the way up.

    LOL a skulk elevator.

Please. The correct term is "skulkevator."

Yeah, we were talking about ladders in the chatroom. Apparently, ladders are quite a big part. And the marines go up them slow and everything...

And yes, aliens can climb them, because, as coil said in the chat, an Onos wouldn't be able to get around without them...

Not bugs. Bugs are something the developers didn't intend to be in the game. These are just non-existent features that don't matter as much as, say, balancing weapon damages.

And does onos accelerate when he climbs?

In DPB the models lean, albit from the waist.

No, the Onos does not accelerate when he climbs.

If you manage to turn the models upside down the skulkelevator wouldn't work, but if you managed it, I certainly wouldn't care.

its not the fact that how could an onos climb a ladder being the problem

    its the fact that:

It looks like that, but this is an engine limitation, all the models look like that when they climb a ladder.....
  • ChapelChapel Join Date: 2002-10-06 Member: 1449Members
The half life engine doesn't support ladder animations I think, no mod so far has had it. Even in the grand CS people still float magically up to the warehouse roof on cs_assault.

So they would have to change the ladder to some other entity and...bach...I don't think even THESE geniuses can or would wanna bother trying pulling that off.
  • MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
Actually, doing a 'simple' animation would probably be easy. Just put code in that says while someone is climbing, x animation plays. The reason CS doesn't have an animation like that is because the game is about guns, not pretty animations or levels or immersive gameplay.
