    Well.. yeah, he can view twice the pr0n! Or som'n. Can you switch monitors in the middle of a game? Cause that'd be nice for IRC'ing while playing a bit of NS.

    Nope.

    I in no way need a dual monitor setup. But it was free, so neh.

    I use two monitors myself, one at 1280*1024 and the other 1600*1200. It's a lot of desktop space, and most people don't need anywhere near that much. But it just sort of happened naturally for me. I started off with 1 monitor and gradually increased the resolution until it couldn't go any higher, then I got two monitors, originally at 1024*768, but every few months I increase the resolution again.

    The problem is, once you've used dual monitors or super high resolutions, you can't go back. Maybe no one needs it, but I can't live without it (or compute anyway).

    In a similar fashion, I have been gradually increasing my refresh rate. It's at 85Hz now and there's no way I can go back down to 75 or 60.

    I agree with X-Illuminati, once you've used two monitors, you don't go back.

    I bought a new monitor as my old one was on the blink and i figured i would try a dual setup, just to see and its so much easier to work like that.
    I use the old monitor for IMs, IRC, playlists and random junk thats handy to be displayed all the time and my new monitor for browser windows and stuff.

    Try it and you won't go back.

    How does mouse focus work between 2 monitors? ...or just the pointer in general.

    Coil and I have both had dual-monitor setups for quite some time. Other than Photoshop I don't know what he needs/uses it for. As for me, I'll typically have Trillian, winamp, readme.txt's, windows explorer, etc. in my secondary monitor because it's a little smaller, has a slightly lower resolution, and is powered by a 3DFX Voodoo4 I bought 1 month before they suddenly went out of business <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    My primary monitor is used for games/movies/browsing a dozen websites all at once in Opera. I've still got the same GeForce 2 from 2 1/2 years ago, but because I'm too busy with Planescape: Torment and NS to bother with new games like Deus Ex 2 or KOTOR, I'm unlikely to upgrade until this summer or later.

    For those of you who think this is great for gaming: it really doesn't make any difference. Alt-tabbing between a game on the primary screen and IRC on the secondary doesn't always work ideally, it depends on the game. That's why I have an old 266MHz machine hooked up to the secondary via a KVM switch. Translation: I can flip a switch to choose between having my 2nd monitor show the 2nd half of my faster machine's desktop, or have it show the desktop of the old, slow, but still perfectly irc/IM-capable machine.

    [edit]Another thing that's so simple, you'll want to kick yourself for not thinking about it earlier: using multiple monitors in most games, FPS games especially, are <i>horrible</i> if you have an even number of monitors. Even if your game of choice somehow supported it fine, think of where the crosshair would be. Yeah. Wargames on the other hand are absolutely beautiful for it: think about running a game like <a href='http://www.battlefront.com/products/tacops4/demo.html' target='_blank'>TacOpsCav</a> or <a href='http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/products/POA2/POA2b.html' target='_blank'>Point of Attack 2</a> and having a 2nd monitor for the zoomed-out overview and the primary one for tactical planning.[/edit]

    And by the way, <a href='http://zmatrix.sourceforge.net' target='_blank'>ZMatrix</a> looks rather nice on dual monitors <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> Props to Coil for spreading the word around after I first told him about it.

    i was going to set-up dual monitors [have one right here] but i figured it wouldnt be too useful, and id be better off just reassembling the only 266 mhz pc we have lying around, install linux on it [always something i wanted to do <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->] and then IRC when im playing games, or...

    hehehehe

    remembers that

    our sysadmin had one of his computers in his office hooked up with 2 moniters

    we had the row of computers with an UNSHIELDED POWERLINE right behind the moniters, yah that was always fun. Degause/poweron and the entire line acts like friken jello <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    My one problem is this:

    Dosn't the NS + 2X Moniters = craped out NS problem still exist?

    one of these days I WILL get a second moniter for the comp I have sitting right next to me, and then I will actualy be able to have like IRC, and Winamp and stuff VISABLE! (especialy when playing games <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    Too bad sound systems don't count as geek bling, cuz I could own yous all 8 ways to betterwearahaturday with my setup, whereas everything else I am lacking in the hardware department (My comp is ugly, my monitor is small, and I have no purdy blinking lights).

    haha All your hive...

    my comp is crap too <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    HARDWARE:

    athlon 600 mhz
    crappy mobo
    256 mb ram
    geforce 2 mx 400

    ONLY good thing is that i have 260 GB hdd... still not enough though <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> when i go to lans, i mean. cleaned it not so long ago, havent downloaded anything, and still almost full <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> maybe 10 gigs off?

    CASE: lost some screws or something for CPU fan... so my dad had to rig up something to hold it in place... involves a thick rubber band and two corks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    the front of my case comes completely off. only thing holding it in now is because it SORT OF clips on [doesnt hold though, especially if you knock it slightly or hold it upside down <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->], and also because the power button has cable to computer <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    my sound "system" is crap, speakers often have constant annoying static-y sounds <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    im running windows, so thats another problem...

    my telstra internet cuts me out every so often, for no reason whatsoever. maybe its my network, telstra, my computer, or something i dont know.

    oh and msn messenger 6.0 or 6.1 dont work, i have to run 5.0 which is crap <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    games like HL on lowest quality and tweaked for performance still run crappily... CS 1.6 i get 30 fps around about

    well then <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Running dual 17s at 1600x1200 each, myself... really handy for Maya work, though the secondary has a bit of distortion on the right edge (came from a very abusive home, replaced with a monitor that could only handle 1280x1024, which was much hardier).

    Given that each of 'em weighs about 60 pounds, along with all the other crud on my desk, I'm surprised it hasn't collapsed yet.
