    I feel your pain. I find that I usually am trying something too above my level. Make a small fun co_map and then work your way up to more grandeous projects. And above all have fun!

    damnit i know what you mean dude, ive started a ns map just a while ago (read 2 days), and i only have a unperfect marine start.

    i also wonder how you guys make maps so biutifull, becuz all my maps turnup dull and flat.

    (does any1 have hints on this)

    This all takes practice. I have been "mapping" for two years and never released anything. (This was my decision, I didn't want to release boxy **** maps)

    Another thing is that mapping takes talent. To be able to see something in you mind's eye and translate to a BSP is tough and what I would call a gift. Lucky for people like me you don't have to have this gift, you can practice and still get it right, it just takes awhile. From now on, don't play maps, study them, learn them and feed off of them. This will help you get a finished map fairly quickly and it will help your brain start making these things up on it's own.

    Oh and working your **** off until 6:00 A.M. is what I meant by fun of course!

    Ohhh, so many times i have been tweeking 1 little spot, only to decide to scrap the whole area the next week.

    Just keep at it, more practice will give you better results.

    Head to blockbuster, rent as many sci-fi movies as you can, watch them all, and find your entieusiasm for NS mapping skyrocket.

    Seriously, movies like Aliens, Alien: Resurrection, Event Horizon, hell, even Lost In Space, all have fantastic sci-fi atmospheres. Just watch the movie and <s>rip off</s> use the locations to influence you.

    Yeah, Take Ensuna's pearls of wisdom.
    Also. VHe in my opinion is not fun.
    Sitting, looking at graphs and fiddling with masses of tools is not fun.
    But the finished article! thats when you can justify the pain!

    As well as the film inspiration, look at official maps. WHat do they do to add variety? how do they create rooms that dont look like blocks.?.. how do they make Hive areas interesting..?? etc.

    Try to adopt a look to your map. A certain style which makes your map individual.

    Its bloody hard.
    Especially Natural Selection.

    SO here's my idea for a map

    Khaara map. You're on the completly infested Science Vessal Yanger. They were studying the bactiria that make up the Khaara, when there was an outbreak. Alarms sounded, the scientists sounded the alarm, but it was too late, the bactria spread. The captian of SV Yanger sent out the TSA distress call, bringing them in, opening the cargo hanger for their entry and activated the resource node in the hanger; but the TSA arived too late, their mission now: eradicate the Khaara threat, and not allow them to have access to a space ship.

    You start off in the bay area, with the TSA Assault Transport Ship.

    how about this. a map where it all starts in the mountains in a ship crash landed there, the ship is tilted to make it a little cooler mwehhee. and hive names can be generator, control room, armory, mess hall, baracks, etc.. the point is its in the mountains of the himalayas, its snowing, there is snow coming in from the top of the control room into the room, marines have 2 resnodes built for faster production....


    im going a little off topic right now, is it possible to put a resnode on the wall?

    res node on wall im pretty sure is not possible.

    For me, mapping, I do best right after playing some game or watching a movie. Alien, ns, unreal2. Pretty much anything that would spark an imagination... Does take lots of time, im in same as darkati, after 2 years, still nothing. I still have trouble with lighting sometimes. Its evil, but the heart of a beutiful map.

    i got this cool demo i made, with random triggers, and stuff... well anyways, in the next room, depending on what triger was triggered, it would drop a scientist in to a meat grinder... a meat grinder with glass walls, and you can the the gibs everywhere..

    You could try making a map from one of the Alien movies. Take memorable parts, put a few corridors in between them and it should be OK. Someone made a map of "The Rock" for Counter-Strike and it's really, really good. It has the memorable parts such as the flame bit (you can even go through it if you wish), the shower room and light house.

    A Stargate Themed Map Idea.

    Make map where marines start in Goa'uld Ha'tak Pel'tak, and aliens are somewhere midlevel in cargo bay wheres the stargate. There would be transporation rings(wich marines, and everything else than onos can use). Then there would be 1 Level inbetween the Cargo bay and Pel'tak wich could be a Hangar with Death Gliders in it(i got model of Death Glider). That way ya could have interesting battles in the hangar while others try get to the enemy by rings. Ya would need much info on Stargate Series and how stuff are in it to make this map.

    Watch movies. Watch lots of movies. Especially onces that have a high tech setting. Some suggestions:
    Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien Resurection, Event Horizon, Total Recal, Star Trek, Sphere, etc.

    Read books with scifi settings:

    Google Image Search!:
    Search for things like 'space stations' and 'scifi'
