Anyone here ever play ZergvsZerg from Starcraft and then have your enemy secretly build a Nydus canal in your base then send all his troops through it?
Can this sortov sneaky trick be done in NS by the marines by sercretly putting a phase gate in/near the alien base then sending a squad through it to wreak havoc?

A)The alien team will quickly destroy and Phase Gate so close to their base, + they can use it themselves if the other side of the gate isn't guarded.
B)Unlike SC phase gates must be built by people so you'll have to send marines to build the thing instead of just click on a spot covered with creep and it automatically builds.
I'm not quite sure, you should ask the PTs, but i'm sure marines already build phase gates near an alien for quick access to it.
I think this would be very usefull for large maps, the stories keep saying how it takes forever to move a heavy marine squad. well you send out a scout party and build a phase gate then *flash* the heavies come through
(Let's not try and confuse people, ok? <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> )

yea, as pheonix said, it'd be more of an advantage to the alien
In a lot ways, the phase gate is a double edged sword. Its a liability to have it located in the marine start, so its best placed surrounded by turrets. Hell, if you really want to, you can place mines around it and any foolish alien who steps through is reduced to goo.
Because it is ACTUALLY reasonably early on the tech tree (Available after observatory), it is EXTREMELY useful for securing a hive. Simply place it in the center of the base, mine it up. Then, whenever your teammates need help, phase in some help.
Due to the fact that the phase gate is pretty big and bulky (it IS a teleporter), in addition to the fact that it makes a loud "Pheeesheeeeew" sound when it gates people in and has a stream of rising green particles, its not the most discrete thing in the world. Phase gates are best placed in ALREADY secured hives or hives BEING secured, as well as staging areas. The key thing is, both points should already have defenses set up.
Additionally, Phase gates used in tandem with Heavy Armor are a deadly combination. While I have yet to test this tactic, I have often though that a late game strategy of sending two LMG marines with jetpacks into a seculded corner of a very large hive room. (the powersilo on Nothing, the refinery hive on bast, etc . . ) and have them set up a phase gate in a raised area. The just gate in the heavies and you have instant, near invincible, engines of destruction.
What does this mean? this means that we playtesters have merely scratched the surface of potential tactics to be used when NS is released. I cant wait to see what kinds of commanders the public has to offer.
So they aren't they same as nydus canal in SC, because the zergs never had to worry about their enemies using it really. Using the phase gates are extremely handy, but like humbaba said, sometimes it can be used both ways, since most turrets are initially built around the cc, and at doors, and not around where the phase gate will be placed.
