Keyboard Controls

<div class="IPBDescription">for new people</div> I have read many post latley and often they talk about controls, usually its people saying yeah hit the control key to duck - i cant believe people actually use the control key for important controls its insane!

So i thought i would make a thread that might help people make there own more effective controls.
Below is my current set of controls i have used it since the days of doom and heretic when mouse controls were first implemented (properly) and then they were later refined when quake came out and i had a friend who was really big into tournaments and clans etc, now i first thought he was crazy using these controls but believe me they are the most effective controls every because ever finger sits above the keys you need to use, so there is no delay and no having to stretch and/or mistakingly hitting the wrong keys.

Hopefully all you vets and clan peoples will be able to add your own little control configs to help this along! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<i><u>My current controls:</u></i>

<u><b>Movement:</b> </u>

<b>A=strafe left</b>
<b>S=walk backwards </b> (now its kind of wierd at first to have them in a row,
<b> D=walk forwads </b> but after a while it makes sense to use home row)
<b>F=strafe right</b>
<b>SHIFT=walk</b>
<b>C =crouch </b> (nice and close the to other controls and probably pressed by the first finger)
<b>Right Mouse Button = jump </b> (yes another suprise you might say, but you can click the rightmouse button heaps faster than you can hit the space bar with your thumb but mainly it lets your left hand concentrate on controlling your direction of travel, and this is how strafe jumping is most effeciant.)

oh and dont forget to exploit the bug where strafing up a ladder makes you climb twice as fast in HL.

<u><b>Action</b></u>

<b>Left Mouse Button=Shoot</b> (der - your crazy to use anything else)
<b>Space=2nd weapon slot</b> (its great to quickly whip out the pistol or blink)
<b>Thumb Mouse Button=3rd weapon slot</b>
<b>Caps lock=1st weapon slot </b>( good for switching between 1st 2nd and 3rd and 4rthweapon combinations)
<b>Q=request orders
W=rogerthat!
H=dropweapon
G=4rthweapon</b>
<b>R=reload</b>
<b>E=build/open/use</b>
<b>Z=Ask for med pack</b>
<b>X=Ask for ammo</b>
<b>CTRL=voice comms
Y=chat
U=teamchat</b>

Hope this helps !(hope it helps me too) <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Yes, that is a strange control set.

    Personally, I use the wasd controls with some modifications:

    Shift = Duck
    Ctrl = Walk
    Space = Secondary weapon function (In NS this is the command menu)
    RMB = Jump
    Q = Reload
    R = Autorun (Habit from Planetside I just cant go without, especially in NS where you (should) type so much)

    Controls only matter to those who use them. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Anyways, to add to the list of "OMGWTHBBQ?!" controls, this is what I've used ever since the days of Quake:

    LMB = Forward
    RMB = Backward
    Z/X = Left/Right strafing
    Space = Jump
    A = Duck
    Shift = Walk
    Ctrl = Fire (hows that for an important key? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
    Alt = Usually alt fire, but since half life is older than alt fires, its set to last weapon for blinking/leaping/whatever <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    MMB = Reload
    T/R = Chat/Team chat

    etc.

    It prolly sounds odd to most of you (except the two or three other people who use a 'mousewalk' config too <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->), but hey... it works for me! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I use the arrow keys.

    Now before you cry "nub!"... My hands are frekin huge, as are my fingers. I still get the same degree of control as most do with the WASD or ESDF configs that (I think) the majority of the community uses.

    I used the arrows for the longest time... I played Doom and Doom 2 on DWANGO that way, that's what got me hooked.

    About 4 or 5 years ago though I started using the standard WASD config.

    I can't stand mousemove setups myself, but at least I've seen people use it before... Schkorpio, I don't see how you could possibly have full mobility with that setup. How could you circle strafe, or even just strafe at an angle?

    I optimized the controls so that there would be easy access to more keys and for fast switching to abilities. In addition, I have custom configurations for each class - so I switch the buttons for the abilities depending on what I use more.

    <b>

    **Movement

    bind "t" "+forward"
    bind "g" "+back"
    bind "f" "+moveleft"
    bind "h" "+moveright"
    bind "x" "+duck"
    bind "z" "+speed"
    bind "MOUSE2" "+jump"

    **Functions

    bind "MOUSE1" "+attack"
    bind "SPACE" "+use"
    bind "u" "+reload"
    bind "ctrl" "kill"
    bind "m" "+showmap"
    bind "SHIFT" "+voicerecord"

    **Abilities

    bind "r" "slot1"
    bind "y" "slot2"
    bind "j" "slot3"
    bind "u" "slot4"
    bind "e" "slot5"

    </b>

    The abilities can be resorted according to the lifeform. As for the keys around, I have the voice impulses, build impulses, and other useful toggles. Numpad is used for evolutions and abilities impulses. If you have a 5 button mouse or greater, then the slots can be assigned to the buttons if you feel comfortable using them. I have mouse3, mouse4, and mouse5 bound to the 3 most important slots for whatever class I am using.

    The only difference is that I use Mouse4 to voice chat, which on my mouse is to click down on the scrollwheel. I find it very convienient. I can move and even shoot normally all while carrying on a conversation with my teammates... Dosen't take away any fingers from what I would use for normally controlling the game, except my right-click finger, which is bound to the pop-up menu anyway. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I don't see what's wrong with using CTRL for important controls. I use it for crouch, and I simply keep my little finger on it at all times.

    same here, civilian.

    i use arrow keys first off.

    end is reload
    pgdn is use
    delete is lastinv
    ctrl is crouch
    kp_ins is voice
    kp_end is walk
    mouse1 is shoot (duh)
    mouse2 is jump
    wheel is change weapons
    mouse3 is menu (click in mouse wheel)

    don't think i forgot anything. May seem awkward at first, but I have very long agile fingers (I did origami a lot for about 10 years).

    my controls are obviously the best

    They are set up so right hand does mouse

    and left hand can easily reach everything else (im left handed)

    ANyways..

    Arrow keys move/strafe
    Crouch is control
    Build/use is Space
    Shift is walk
    Enter is voicecomm
    ? is Spray Logo

    Left mouse is Fire
    Right mouse is Jump
    Wheel up is weapon last
    Wheel down is weapon previous
    Wheel push in is weapon reload

    Misc Keys:
    C is map
    V is NS menu
    (dont use these much so dont care)

    T is ALLchat
    Y is voicechat

    Keypad

    0 is weapon slot (whatever blink is)
    1 is weapon slot (whatever slash is)
    2 is weapon slot (whatever stomp is)

    With these keys EVERYTHING is easily findeable and useable NO problem <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    it is also the best setup ever

    I agree with above RMB for jump is the best..

    <span style='color:orange'>I'll TRY IT!</span>

    I've had other Quake friends tell me about <b>ASDF movement</b> control and I always thought it weird. Why would you need to <b>waist two fingers</b> with moving forward and backward?

    -But, I'm not going to say it's bad until I've thoroughly tried it. If I don't like it then I'll try <b>SEDF</b> for motion.

    By the way, What happened to "lastinv" I don't see it in the normal bindable keys? I must be blind. NS had it on "Q" by default before, but not now.

    It's difficult for me. I used to play the way everyone did in the days of Doom and Doom2.

    You'd place your left hand on the ctrl with your thumb on the space key (to open doors or flick switches) and your right hand on the arrow keys (left and right were turns, not strafes). Things were a lot simpler then too. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    For some reason in Doom2 with run on, you could go about 40 miles per hour, and you could 'climb' up on stairs without any slowdown. This lead to a lot of fun maps where there were deep pits where the sides were very steep stairs (so you could climb out instantaneously).

    Ah those were the days!

    Since then I've had to readjust to strafing and *shudders* the mouse.

    Back when I played TFC alot, my brother introduced me to a problem with the standard f/g grenade keys, which was that while you held them down to prime the grenade, you couldn't strafe right. His solution was to bind primeone/primetwo to the mouse wheel. With this setup, you just flick the mouse wheel to select the grenade you want and then press the wheel in to throw it. From this I learned two things: 1) the default controls often suck (or at least slow you down) and 2) whenever possible move keybinds from your left hand to your right so you can keep moving constantly.

    Here is my config changes:
    alt: +popupmenu
    mwheelup: slot2
    mwheeldown: slot3
    mouse3: slot1
    mouse2: slot4
    (check out my <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=60424&st=0&#entry892294' target='_blank'>weaponswitch</a> post for beta 3.0 issues)

    I agree it's works awesome for games like UT or Quake. For me, it did <span style='color:orange'><b>not work well with Half-Life.</b></span> Try crouch jumping and you'll see what I mean. -Also try playing "The Specialist" and do a jump to stunt while firing and activating slow mode power-up at same time.

    All is not lost, though. Thanks to you I tried this new key combo, and it's AWESOME!

    <b>"S,E,D,F" keys for movement
    "SHIFT" crouch
    "R" use
    "T" reload
    "CAP,A,W,G,5" for weapons</b>

    <i><u>Keybord controls</u></i>

    <b>N</b> - Primary attack
    <b>J</b> - Secondary attack
    <b>B</b> - Strafe left
    <b>M</b> - Strafe right
    <b>V</b> - Duck
    <b>H</b> - +commandmenu
    <b>comma</b> - Use
    <b>K</b> - +voicerecord

    <i><u>Mouse controls - Mouse: Logitech MX500</u></i>

    <b>LMB</b> - Move forward
    <b>RMB</b> - Move backward
    <b>Mouse4</b> - stopsound
    <b>Mouse5</b> - walk/sprint (depends on mod)

    I am one of those 'mousewalkers' and I have used these controls for years, and in every FPS-game I've come across. It works great!

    I won't put the rest, because you get the general idea. My game improved 20%. I moved from being average in combat mode to top 30% ! So many more buttons for my pinky to use! <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    move everything 2 buttons to the right and you have even more access

    I've been an arrow-key man as long as I can remember. Here's my setup:

    Arrows - Move forward/backward, strafe L/R
    Mouse1 - Fire
    Mouse2 - Pop-up Menu
    Mousewheel up/down - Prev/Next weapon
    Mouse3(mousewheel click) - Reload
    Ctrl - Jump
    Shift - Use/Walk
    Forward Slash - Crouch
    KP_INS - Voice Comm
    KP_END - Last used weapon
    KP_DEL - Flashlight
    KP_PLUS - Map Overlay
    KP_MINUS - Taunt <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Most people who see me play think I'm damn weird for using forward slash for crouch, but I have excellent left pinky control. Crouch-jumping is pretty simple too.

    CAPSLOCK and SHIFT are easy to hit the SEDF way. Another set of buttons to the right and my pinky gets confused. I tried it, and a few times I hit the WINDOWS KEY, opps very bad.

    SEDF is a must for The Specialist. Stunt on SHIFT, Crouch on "a", secondary(kick) attack on CAPSLOCK, and activate powerup on MOUSE2. Then you can jump then stunt at them while activating slow mode and firing. Then switch to kung fu while rolling and rise with a finishing jump kick. It's a beatiful thing.

    I have my left hand on my mouse, right on keyboard so here's my set up:
    kp_7 turn left
    kp_8 forward
    kp_9 turn right
    kp_4 move left
    kp_5 backward
    kp_6 move right
    kp_1 slot1
    kp_2 menu
    kp_0 slot2
    kp_/ slot3
    kp_* slot4
    kp_- show score
    kp_+ drop weapon
    kp_enter use
    rightarrow jump
    downarrow crouch
    uparrow reload
    pg_down map

    rightmouse fire
    leftmouse walk

    I have been using this lay out style since quake 2(arrow keys for movement for fps before q2) and it works great for me

    I use the turn left and right keys just to help turn around 90 degree or maybe 180 degree quickly to look around together with mouse movements.
