Hi there
recently i visited the ns hp after a long time ...
and i was shockt after i have seen that u uns staem. it sucks a lot and is pretty solw and i cant see why anyone who has a bit of brain would use this ... (i dont see the need of a third party tool)
if u need an engine that rox take Q1 tenebrae <a href='http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/</a>
if u r able to buld a mod like this .. this wont be a problem 4 u (the hl engine is freaking old and u could need something new. and keep in mind that this engine is free)

2nd thing is more of my personal opinion then simple fact. While people may have lamented Steam to hell and back, I have had no problems with Steam what so ever. Its been a breeze. Everything you could ever want in one nice neat package.
3rd thing is that research is going on as to what engine, if any, NS2 will/could/may be ported to. The obvious one is, of course, the Source engine. Only time will tell on that regard.
Oh and the the lack of Minimize-to-desktop sound bug is enough fo a reason anyway.
There there
i think every step in that direction is wrong
(i hope any one of the NS developern takes a look at tenebre)
so long

steam actually improves the original half-life in some ways, including the rather funky feature to play MP3 files. Originally mods had to go use fmod files to do this and now thanks to the steam-updated half-life it's part of the game. Unfortunately it's not that well known it can do that so don't expect it to be all that common before HL2 stomps in an ahnilates the old community anyways ^^;
I have to echo aldaris's experiences with steam: it's given me little to no trouble whatsoever =o
Or 56k'ers but nobody has 56k because they want it. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
anyway the gui is damn slow (and i cant imagene why ... the gui is not raly impresive or big or something it shout run on a 2 ghz cpu like hell but fell like i got a i168)
Here's an idea if it loads to slow, leave it running, and if you have broadband this isn't a problem, if you don't steam is the last thing you should be worried about.
If a program whisout any visual efet is runnig that solw it has normaly a verry bad code ^^
and i have 2Mbit
Unless you mean the little banner saying "Steam content server 7"?
Besides, it's just informing whos server bandwidth you using. Unless it starts with popups in the middle of a game it doesn't bother me.
It is not debatable. NS is going to Steam, as Half-Life is going to Steam. It's a fairly robust platform, and the current problems are NOTHING compared to WON's inception.
As well, Tenebrae is a mod of Quake 1. An OLDER engine than Half-Life. Sure, they add some HDRR techniques, but it makes things run VERY slow. Painfully so. <i>Incredibly</i> so. Tenebrae Q1 would not be a robust enough engine to support NS, would raise system requirements (<b>far</b> past where they are currently, on Steam-NS), and is extremely unlikely to get significantly better.
Steam, on the other hand, contains an inbuilt versioning and delivery system, allows for updated libraries to be disseminated across the playerbase almost instantly, and has a tight, FAST engine coming up riding on it. Namely, HL2. I'd been there for the demos, and it looks far better than anything Tenebrae can spit up.
While T-Q1 may be an ambitious project, it can't hold a candle to the result of a well-paid team of programmers working full-time on a dedicated next-gen moneymaker.
Once more. NS is moving to Steam. There are no plans for an engine change, and I heavily doubt that the dev team would go to an OLDER, SLOWER, LESS-ROBUST engine if they somehow <i>did</i> decide to make a jump.

I was under the impression (perhaps from older steam releases) that these were 'real' banner adds. If that is not the case then ignore my previous post.
the HL engine is an enhaced Q1 engine (now 6yaers old) but is looking poor at the moment
T-Q1 looks far better ond it is not much older than 1 year
ok you will need a 3 yaer old grafik card and cpu to run it but this schould be a pice of cake.
Did u ever played an t-Q1 test level (made for the engine??? it looks a lot like the DOOM3 alpha )
@Talesin:
By the way are you an develper <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->
(Your post sounds some how offical ^^)

Edited i claened the 1337
They kind of are, but you only get the 3dgamers one or the gamespy one if you are connected to the content server they provide for you.
If you connect to the boomtown server steam displays the boomtown banner.
More of a sponsership deal really.
But afaik your banner will only come up if people are connected to your server. So you have to provide a server meeting the minimum requirements to host steam content and in return you get a tiny banner shown when anyone automatically downloads an update. Seems fair enough to me.
The link you want is this one <a href='http://www.tenebrae2.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.tenebrae2.com/</a>
Theres 2 problems I see. First, while they may be professionals (I don't know on this regard. A quick search of the site didn't say anything on that regard) they're doing this in their own time. It would mean making a 3rd party mod from an engine made from another 3rd party. Lots of hassle.
2nd is the target specs for Tenebrae 2 would rule out most of the people (me included) who play HL, simply because it isn't as system intensive as newer engines.
And I don't normally say this, but please clean up your spelling as I have no idea what the last sentence meant? If theres a legit reason for this then I apologise
