Crashing In 3.0 (betas 1-3)

Since upgrading to NS 3.0, I've been getting occasional hard locks with a 'HL launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close' errors. I'm not certain if this is due to NS, or due to Steam(I upgraded to Steam for 3.0), but after checking both these forums and the Steam forums, I haven't seen anyone having a similar problem.

I am currently running a few tests to make sure it's not a hardware problem. I'll update my drivers next, but as I have no problems with any other program, so I don't have a whole lot of hope that'll help.

System specs:
Athlon XP 1500+ @ 1.66ghz
MSI KT266a based mobo
512mb pc2100
Geforce 2 GTS-V (overclocked)
TBSC

I think it is a software problem, but the only thing specific that comes to mind is that your overclock is not stable. Have you made sure that there are no instabillity problems by running a very CPU intensive program for a few hours(e.g. prime95).

When you play most other games you would be bound by your graphics card and CPU usage never reaches 100% for extend periods of time. In NS(and HL MODs) it is entirely possible that you are CPU bound.

That wouldn't explain why WON worked fine and Steam not so well so it's not a very good guess.

I updated my drivers and did some thorough cpu tests, but the crashing still hasn't stopped. As usual prime95 didn't get me any errors, I guess the next thing to try is backing down my video card overclock a bit, and see if that helps.

Well, I tried backing down my overclocks to stock speeds, and that didn't help. I then switched the game to render in d3d mode, and that seems to have halted the crashing (or at least it didn't crash in the hour or two I played earlier). This indicates that it's a software or driver issue. As I already have the latest drivers for my video card and motherboard chipset, that doesn't leave me with a whole lot more options. I guess I'll check for an updated sound card driver, and if that doesn't help I'll have to reinstall NS, as d3d performance sucks.
