When To Muse Mic, And When To Use Teamchat

a time and a place for both
I firmly believe that you will not get half the fun out of NS or any other online FPS without a mic. However, it is important to know when to hold back on chatter, and when to type something out.

Sound is very important in this game. Early game it is the only way to tell where enemies are without actually spotting them. Many times as rine I have ambushed an ambushee skulk simply because I walked throught a entrace rather than ran through. Ditto for when I skulk. Too many people spamming the mic, even if it is important, can severly hamper a players ability to fight, and you don't even get the valuable info your teamates were trying to tell you. If you have something to say to the team, but it is not immediate, consider typing it out in teamchat. You will still get your point across. You avoid possible confusion, cause voice in NS is not perfect and it can be hard to understand people sometimes.

Particularly when you are a rine, it is important to be able to hear your commander, and vice versa. Use the in game rine sound bytes. "Im in position", "got your six", etc gets your point across more clearly than the mic. It is also more atmospheric, IMO.

Of course, if you have just a comment, and not something to do with the current game in progress, put it in type. I myself am guilty of frivolous mic usage, and I have payed the price for it before.

Communication is #1 in this game. It can make the difference between a drag on the team, and a contributing factor to your teams success, as much as skill can. Too much communicatin at once, however, can hinder your team. Know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it, and you will be a much better player.

I just mute people who are talking too much.

I ban them. (Seriously... if you think we care about you and your fake girlfriend more then the game, you're wrong, and you're not invited to ever play with us again.)

He's talking about using the mic too much for legitimate purposes when typing it is sufficient in many cases.

I agree to some degree, however there is never a good time to type out a message except after you die. Example, I killed a guy who was typing, then started to type "lol" and got killed. What people need to learn is what to say. It helps if your team is fairly competent, and you don't have to tell them that skulks are coming, or one skulk is up on the left corner in the next room etc. I think the main problem is when people talk about things that have no relevance to the game at hand. You can either mute them and hope they never say anything useful or listen to them jabber.

Yep, thats exactly what I do. Even if it's the commander. I don't care. I'm sick of slowly moving through an area, KNOWING there is an enemy nearby, and having the comm yelling at noobs to do something, only to get owned because I didn't hear the alien coming.

I think it would be really cool to have a local voice comm system. Where the closer you are the louder you hear their voice, farther away, softer the voice. I just think it would be really cool to hear marines talking while i'm hiding in a vent or something. Eh, not really a useful addition to the game, but I think it would improve the atmosphere. Not to mention players could re-enact scenes from the popular movie "Apocalypse Now". I can just see the heavy trains blaring classical death as they march on the hive. "Oh no I hear them coming!"

To those who mute to hear game noises: change your voice settings... specifically voice_overdrive!

If you set voice_overdrive under 1 (ie. 0.5) it will actually amplify game sounds while someone is talking.

Yeah, I especially hate it when I'm commanding and I have a bunch of marines talking on the mic, because it's important for me to find out which hive the aliens start with so I can tell my team where to go. Also another thing that bugs me is the ingame radio chatter; in serious games I hate it when a teammate uses the in game radio because then it could reveal our position to a nearby alien and such, but in games where we just play around I like to use the taunt a lot, especially while fighting

my views: in scrims only the comm should use the mic. other players should keep the line free for the comm as much as posible

but on pubs: anyone can use the mic as much as they want. i love playing with alltalk on and with a bunch of friends. if you hate mic spamers. mute them

I understand exactly what you are talking about coco-nut, I play on the same server as you ALL the time (FUBAR) and I know that a few guys just waste time crying for rts while you are rushing for a hive or are telling that kid with the squeaky voice to shut-up. I personaly don't like the sound-bytes one bit , as an alien that just tells me to get ready to ambush, as a rine I just wanna tell the guy to shut-up. Then I gotta watch as he rapidly changes weapons...

I use teamchat almost exclusively when it comes to communicating long-term team strategy. I do however, use mic when alerting my squad when there are potential threats nearby.

Mic usage is really bad on some servers, being european means that i have to deal with the worst kind of voice spamming: french.
With the little french i know i can tell that they're not talking about anything game related, and they don't seem to intend to talk and play at the same time, and the talk a whole lot.

    thank god for muting.
(it's kinda weird having to mute your whole team though, but they won't stop talking)
