When To Muse Mic, And When To Use Teamchat

<div class="IPBDescription">a time and a place for both</div> I firmly believe that you will not get half the fun out of NS or any other online FPS without a mic. However, it is important to know when to hold back on chatter, and when to type something out.
Sound is very important in this game. Early game it is the only way to tell where enemies are without actually spotting them. Many times as rine I have ambushed an ambushee skulk simply because I walked throught a entrace rather than ran through. Ditto for when I skulk. Too many people spamming the mic, even if it is important, can severly hamper a players ability to fight, and you don't even get the valuable info your teamates were trying to tell you. If you have something to say to the team, but it is not immediate, consider typing it out in teamchat. You will still get your point across. You avoid possible confusion, cause voice in NS is not perfect and it can be hard to understand people sometimes.
Particularly when you are a rine, it is important to be able to hear your commander, and vice versa. Use the in game rine sound bytes. "Im in position", "got your six", etc gets your point across more clearly than the mic. It is also more atmospheric, IMO.
Of course, if you have just a comment, and not something to do with the current game in progress, put it in type. I myself am guilty of frivolous mic usage, and I have payed the price for it before.
Communication is #1 in this game. It can make the difference between a drag on the team, and a contributing factor to your teams success, as much as skill can. Too much communicatin at once, however, can hinder your team. Know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it, and you will be a much better player.

Yep, thats exactly what I do. Even if it's the commander. I don't care. I'm sick of slowly moving through an area, KNOWING there is an enemy nearby, and having the comm yelling at noobs to do something, only to get owned because I didn't hear the alien coming.
I think it would be really cool to have a local voice comm system. Where the closer you are the louder you hear their voice, farther away, softer the voice. I just think it would be really cool to hear marines talking while i'm hiding in a vent or something. Eh, not really a useful addition to the game, but I think it would improve the atmosphere. Not to mention players could re-enact scenes from the popular movie "Apocalypse Now". I can just see the heavy trains blaring classical death as they march on the hive. "Oh no I hear them coming!"
If you set voice_overdrive under 1 (ie. 0.5) it will actually amplify game sounds while someone is talking.
but on pubs: anyone can use the mic as much as they want. i love playing with alltalk on and with a bunch of friends. if you hate mic spamers. mute them
With the little french i know i can tell that they're not talking about anything game related, and they don't seem to intend to talk and play at the same time, and the talk a whole lot.
thank god for muting.
(it's kinda weird having to mute your whole team though, but they won't stop talking)
