Ok listen please. I have been a complete idiot. Wolf I now understand what you have been trying to say, same with you coil. From now on if someone says they dont want there stuff touch DONT DO IT. Now with all current wolf stuff that has been altered I request that the mods lock those and all future ones until wolf says other wise. I am saying all this because I want wolf to come back and to admit I was and am being a jackass about this sitution. Wolf we were wrong about what we did for altering your work. Please come back and forgive us. We are not worthy. Thank you all for taking the time to read this.

I realize this MAY not have been what you were trying to say, but that is what I've gleamed out of your posts, and it's the general idea which I feel is being conveyed to you. If you want to make a difference, weigh your words, strategize your thoughts, and consider what will REALLY help change attitudes around here for the better.

The CC system is pretty much perfect for a modelling community, and I mentioned it in coil's old copyright thread.

edit #2:
(In reply to darkflame, below) You should have realised by now that this is not about bringing brig back -- it's about bringing some semblance of goodt ethical practice to the community.
i like that site billy gave
But on the other hand, I don't see a damned difference between coloring a pistol black and getting your car painted into a non-stock color, or putting a spoiler on it, or puting NoS system in it. You modified it how you want for yourself. I don't see GM crying and shutting their doors because they never intended for the Corvette to have blue headlights.
*Shrug*
But I will say this. Once you release things into the internet, you no longer have any control of what people do with them, and youll have to get used to it.
As a modeller and programmer, Ive come to that realization. Once I release something, its not only mine anymore. Whether I like it or not, anyone can take things Ive created, and do... whatever they want with them. Thats the nature of the internet.
Basically, if you dont want people to mess with things youve made, dont release them.
You can't do that, that's like saying that you're allowed to modify the Corvette engine, but only if you do it yourself without any help, and I hope I don't have to point out the abyssmal stupidity THERE. The only thing you can't do involving redistribution is make a profit off it.
Respect the authors, I don't care if you are legally "allowed to" or if you won't get sued for it, just be respectful and people will respect you. Don't steal models without the author's consent.
As for the opera thing, I don't know what your implying, Opera stole content? even if Opera is dead it doesn't give you the right to take their intellectual property. If a website-design company goes out of business, does that entitle you to be able to take their website designs and use them for your own use without paying them or even asking?
If someone wants to modify (reskin, reanimate, etc) a model, as long as they give credit to the original creator (ie they don't pass it off as their own original work), and they don't try to sell it or otherwise be moronic, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing that.
The only thing "wrong" with those modifications would be that you might make someone unhappy... but there's nothing illegal about hurting feelings.
If for some reason you don't want people modifying your stuff, really the only thing you can do about it is not release your stuff. The end.
If for some reason you want to release modifications of art created by people who don't want their stuff modified, I suggest you release them someplace where the board moderators are on your side :)
Personally I'm for free love for everyone, and the more people who are happy using new work, regardless of source, the better.

If someone wants a black model and you say 'no', you have every right in the world to deny them that, there's nothing they can do, but no matter how you look at it, it's still selfish. They want something, you refuse to offer it to them, they want to do it themself, and you deny them for absolutely no reason besides the fact that it's YOURS, which is the definition of selfish.
I mean, really, you can deny it all you want, the modders aren't holy men, they're plain people. Someone who offers a model and says 'modify as you will, just give credit' is 'Generous'. I doubt anyone would complain about my use of that word. Someone offers a model and says 'it's mine, and not a single one of you ungrateful peasents can ever adjust it to how you want', that's 'selfish', the opposite of 'generous'.
A rapper worth $30,000,000 dollars suing a kid for damages because she downloaded his song is selfish. It's his right, and technically against the law, but it's still selfish.
I never said she wasn't. No one ever said the people doing reskins weren't either.
The point comes down to 'what will you do about it'? In the case of reskins, you could turn into a surly ***hole, show pictures of models and say 'Well I was going to release this but you all can kiss my ****', and leave the community.
In the case of the rapper, you could suffer the loss of 12 cents and be fine, knowing that the sale of that one song will only make a 0.000001% difference in your already excessive income, or you could be an ***hole and sue the pants off of some 8 year old, for absolutely no reason besides the fact that you're an ***hole.
BTW if you're going to try to skirt around and avoid confronting an issue, try to make it look less obvious next time.
a) go more regular to school and leanr something about the law
b) learn something about a normal human behaviour
c) really think about what your trying to say
Its not selfish of a modeler if he forbidds it to convert hack alter or change anything on his models its his freakin right.
Thats also the point y i think fury161 should stop his whole conversion ****.
because did you guys ever read the agree ment box when installing a game.

same gos for models made by a single privat person.
to make things clear
YOU HAVE NO RIGHT WETHER IT IS STATED IN A README OR NOT TO ALTER ANY CONTENT OF SOMEONE ELSES STUFF.
- if you make a model you have copyrights
- same goes for textures or any thing produced by yourself
- these "rights" should protect your creative work from beeing reused as the base of any other artwork.
so the point is clear
YOU HAVE TO ASK THE AUTHOR bevor you can alter anything on it
if he says NO you dont have any right to do so and btw i really never want to hear the word selfish again YOU are selfish if you cant respect someone elses work.
those unreal 2003 conversion are illegal by installing the game you accept the terms of epic and these say that

point clear ??
as for "avoiding issues"... wasn't the issue people who DON'T ask the original authors for permission? We can talk about how mean modellers are who don't let people make conversions of their models all day, it's still their decision whether they are being mean or not. It's the people who don't even ASK for permission who are the problemcases.
and superteflon that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard what if everyone thought that? ooo this wont affect the rapper he makes millions think of if it
the rapper would have nothing left

Aside from the fact that you're almost typing in a foreign language, I think you really should learn to read it first.
I'm really freaking tired of having to repeat myself here, so I'm only saying this once more.
A modeler who wants no one to ever modify his work after releasing it to the community is selfish. He's concerned with nothing but himself. He cares not at all for what other people want. Who cares if they think the magenta on your gun is hideous? You don't! Nah, you don't give a **** what other people want, all you care about is that YOUR precious precious model is never touched again by the ingrates. It's your right, sure, but you're still selfish for telling everyone that.
It is perfectly within your right to deny modification I'm not saying it isn't. All I'm saying is that denying modification of something that you did for free, gave out for free, and is being modified with full credit, that's selfish!
You can tell me what words you do and don't want to hear, but unless you're going to change the english language, 'caring for nothing but yourself' is defined as SELFISH.

i really dont want to offend you
but you REALLY dont know anything about the internet mp3 issue
time for you the read more news and sconomy sites than gamesite
sharing files costs the authors and the "rapper" millions and thats not al his money wich is lost
its ne money of :
roadys
telephonassistants
cleaning men
........
it affects the whole tree not only the one person on top of it
it really seems you have no idea of how many jobs are lost because people have your additude
