Hello Ladies and Gents.... I am a bit confused...
I have been recommended by a friend to try Natural Selection so here I am. I bought a copy of Half Life (Which I was told I need) it has an orange label with a black and gold border, unfortunately it will not register with "Steam" due to the cd code already being used, (A common problem by the forums I have read) I emailed etc but got no reply, (Another common problem) so i have decided to just go and buy another copy of Half Life.... My question is this, The local shop only has a copy of Half Life Generations (Blue Label), will this game allow me to still play Natural Selection or do I have to hunt around for another copy of the orange labelled game. If I need this game can anybody tell me where I can order one please.

Well I havent heard of generations. Is that just a different distribution of HL? But I am pretty sure that Steam will recognize Counter Strike, or DoD (Day of Defeat) Retail games as well as Half life Gold Edition and the others that are out there. I would search for some of those. If you are unable to find them then go to bestbuy.com or ebgames.com one of the big retailers and see if you could order it from there.

If none of these help I would suggest keep bugging the steam guys until they come up with a fix for your cd key problem. Thats just plain wrong it not working.

Half-Life: Generation is like a box set that includes the original Half-Life, Opposing Force (a retail version that let's you play as the "grunts" from HL), and Counter-Strike. If that's all you have available, go ahead and get it. NS only requires the original Half-Life to play.

Yeah, you bought the game, if your CD key was taken, then <i>they</i> as the company, are responsible for getting you a new one. Be sure to offer proof that you bought a copy in the form of a reciept (pictures of one) as well as pictures of the box. Then be ready to prove that your cd key was taken. After that they have to give you a new one, and they will probably ban who ever has that key.

Same thing happened to my friend. I've tried with much effort to get him into NS and he got broadband and finally got NS. Two weeks prior to this he bought Half Life Generations and downloaded STEAM. He tried to register his key but it was taken too. He's emailed them several times with proof and has received no reply. Since then I wrot eon the college messageboard asking for an old copy og Half Life and a ket, I received this within an hour of posting and hopefully he'll be playing tonight! GG Valve, you suck.

Thanks for your very quick replies to my Topic, I have e-mailed a few times regarding my cd key and have enclosed copies of receipts etc, all to no avail.. I will go and get the Half life Generations pack and try to start from the begining again. Once again, many thanks for your help.

Dude, if you can get just the Half Life disc then get it, Generations is just Half Life plus 3 other discs you're not going to use. Just buy Half Life, it's around five pounds. Generation is around 20 pounds, you see the difference?

My dad brought himself a copy of generations, as he doesn't play online I have two sets of cd-key. I may get flamed but if you get no joy from the retailer or valve.. i'm sure there are cd-key generators out there for half-life. Great game but I see no reason why YOU should have to pay out for more than one copy of the game.

CD Keygens don't work online (they have cracked the code for what a 'legal' key is however the havn't cracked it for letting you play online)

As for emailing Valve, I have never seen anyone have problems.

Well there are 2 problems here

1. Some one has bought the game from the store. Taken the CD-Ky and returned it. Saying something like "I got givent this as a present and i already have it" or "I dont agree with the liscencing agreement." my favourite excuse. But Stealing!!!

2. Someone used a keygen with an authentification script... Yes they exist, i have found 1 before. It generates keys, then tests them for authenticity. You get a valid key about every 20mins on a 2Ghz. Only problem is this key is probably some1 elses. So if you use it, its considered stealing.

So whats my advice to you??? Bring the game back to the store with your receipt and get another copy... Tell them that the CD key has already been registered and you are not getting what you paid for.

BTW good luck NS is the best multiplayer game in the world.!!!!!!

I had this problem with SimCity 4 - someone used my CD key three days after the game was released. I got the game on the release date from Amazon, tried registering three days later and my CD key is taken.

Sometime I will get onto EA with pictures and complain.

Same thing happened to me. I bought Half Life and played it on WON for over a year without any problems. Then when NS 3.0 came out I installed Steam but when I tried to register, the cd key came up in use.

I sent a scanned image of the CD, Case cover with the CD-Key printed on it, AND the ORIGIONAL RECIPT to the valve email address listed on their support forum. This was over a month ago now and I still haven't heard back from them.

Luckily a friend of mine had an extra copy of Half Life lying around and let me register the CD-Key.

It still ticks me off that I can't use the one I paid for though.

I'd say return it and make sure the new copy is in a sealed box. Good Luck.

ANY type of distribution of Half-Life will work! Generations, Blue Shift, Good ole Half-Life, Half-life GOTY (the one that i use) Opposing force, DOD,CS any of those keys will allow you to unlock steam.
