How Exactly Does Web Work

I've been playing NS forever. I still remember first reading about it over at Penny Arcade when 1.0 came out. I've watched moronic babblers run around and do nothing. I've been killed by marines over and over while they sat impervious in vents. I've attacked noname more times than I can remember. However, there's one thing I've never understood, and that's web.

Sometimes, it seems to work fine. Other times, I just sit there staring at the little black dots it leaves behind. So, what's the deal with web? What surfaces can and can't it stick to? Does a gorge have a limited number of webs? Are the amount of webs in one area limited? If so, how many?

Bingo. I do belive it's something like 10 per gorge in co, not sure how many in ns, but ns is area-oriented. Maybe 12 per area?

To make a web you need to set it's origin and target location:
1. Select web
2. Place the crosshair in the first location, typically on one wall
3. Click left mouse button. NOTE- A web won't be created, but NS will save the location as the origin location.
4. Place the crosshair in the second location, typically on the opposite wall
5. Click left mouse button. This will set the second location as the target one, and now a web will be created between the origin and target locations.

* There must be a clear line between the origin and target locations in order the web to be created. If there isn't one, it's reset and you have to choose the origin location again.

* Web can't be created if they are touching entities, like rotating doors, elevators, ladders, structures and players. I may be wrong about ladders so feel free correct me.

* After you finish a web, the target location is automatically set as the origin location for the next web. So you can continue clicking the left mouse button and as long as there is a clear line, it will create webs that are linked to each other. Try to make some nice shapes like pentagons and so

* Webs can overlap, but even if they dont, the more webs marine touches, the more time he will stay webbed. So you can make a mega web which looks like 1 web but instead of the normal 7 secs it will slow them 70 secs

* Use webs in bottleneck corridors which forces the enemy to use them. Use them to block JPs by making them in W shapes, but the drawback is that they are clearly visible. To trap non-JPs rines, make webs on the floor from near one wall to the other. They can have 0 height which mean they will look like lines drawn on the floor.

* Don't use too much at one place. Webs have to limit: regional limit and map limit ( limit has nothing to do with the gorge itself or the number of them). Remember: you can't Undo web so every web which is misplaced is a waste.

* Save some for trapping rines that attack you. This is a bit tricky: you need to make the web on the floor that the marine is going to move to, and once he is webbed continue to web him to accumulate more time.

* Use them with OCs to set up traps. It's best to place the OC behind the corner, and web the floor of the corner itself. This way when the marine looks behind the corner he will see two things: 1. OC wall and 2. He is webbed.

* Have fun!!!

There is no crosshair when you use web (I think), so you'll have to use your best judgment here. Also, webs won't be created over a large range.

turn off the hive sight alien flashlight thing for it to work (when they're brigthened up), it's always been bugged and never fixed when you try to use it then.

Hmm, that may be what's tripping me up. I usually have the alien flashlight on when I play.

Anyway, I started up a lan game to just experiment with web, and I'm still at a loss. I noticed one odd thing: sometimes, a web wouldn't show up at first, but when I came back later, it'd be there.

Here's a screeny of a hallway literally covered in web "spots", yet no webs. Anyone have an idea of what I'm doing wrong?

Firstly, you need D chambers.

Secondly, the flashlight can't be on when you MAKE the web. Otherwise, you'll have to go far enough away in the map to make the entities umbra out (The engine will hide them from view to preserve framerates), then come back. They are actually difficult to see sometimes, but well lit areas make it easier.

Otherwise, the guide above did a good job of explaining it.. And I've found that non moving entities (Except structures, since they're special) can be used as an origin point for webs. That includes ladders and SOME types of elevators. But not all.

Yeah, I'm going to try again with the flashlight off.

And the reason I don't have DCs is that I made MCs to get adrenaline, the SCs cause I was curious how many focus spits it would take to kill a lvl 1 marine (it's 3, if anyone's curious.)

However, after the web has been made, turn on the flashlight, so that they are easier to see.

Thanks everyone. I just went and tried it with the flashlight off and of course it worked perfectly. Can't believe it took me so long to figure this out, but whatever, now I know the joy of webbing marine start in combat.
