Ns affirmitive action program?

Politcal correctness gone to far
First off to avoid flaming I am NOT racsist, i hate political correctness with a blindingly furious passion.

okay first we have constant censorship on the boards....personally i belive in free speech but we have no rights here and it keeps the board civil so i can deal with it

Then we have lowered blood/gore/mature elements.... I think its sacrificing artistic vision in order to get a bigger audience/not offend anyone, but the gameplay will still rocks so once again I can deal with it

But I'm sorry this whole random black/white marine thing offends me greatly. Its this kinda of affirmitive action bullsh*t that is preserving the racism in our society (*holding back long rant on affirmitive action*), black people should be able to pick black characters white poeple white characters (well unless they want to play as a different race) Its ludicris that we should be forced to play as minoritys simply to estblish some sort of enforced diversity. I hope in the future there will be asian, hispanic, and other minority skins so all minorities are represented, but enforced representation by people who are not of these minorities is just wrong imho, just as wrong is the fact these minorities will not be presented with the option of representing themselves.

will I not play ns because of this? of course not even if i wanted to make some sort of "statement" I doubt I would be able to hold myself back from playing it cause it looks awesome. I just have the growing worry that this game is being dumbed down and sugar coated for mass-market consumtion (not to mention media consumption) and quite frankly that scares me for this games future.

First off, the only blood in NS is from the aliens- there is no gore at all-

Second off Flayra fixed it speciffically so that you can change your skin color in the console using a command.

okay I read through that thread and somehow missed that, that makes it much better but the whole thing still offends me on principle

Ummmmm... you do realize that the skins choose randomly just because it makes the Marine team look less like a bunch of clones with their original single skin, right? It didn't look normal. And if it defaulted to one skin, you'll end up with the same thing you do in HLDM - fifty million Gordons running around.

Lighten up, Francis. There is no secret agenda here.

snake, when you say something like that, then it sounds to me realy rasistic... 50% of the marines are black and 50% are white... were is the problem? Its just a game!!!!!

Dumbed down? Including black skinned players in NS is dumbing it down? Moderating the forums so that no one is offended is dumbing it down? Lowered gore levels is dumbing it down?

    I don't think so.

You're whole black/white argument is based on the fact that you cannot choose which skin colour you want to be, but you can. And anyway what is the problem with it being random? Do you really think most people actually care what skin colour their player model in NS is? I don't. I really doubt that most other people do.

This is not affirmative action against racism. It's diversity in the player models so that the marine team don't look like clones.
  • BillBill Join Date: 2002-08-08 Member: 1108Members
I fail to see how it matters at all. I think it adds variety, and you don't even see your model for the majority of the game, so what does it matter? Do you not play other games that feature anything other than white people as the main characters? Do you feel more immersed just knowing the skin of your character is white? *Shrug* If you can point out a real reason how it effects gameplay I think you'd be creating a legitimate discussion, otherwise you're just whining about something completely pointless.

[Edit: you guys jump on a topic like a pack of wolves.]

You know, there are some artists, Flayra being one of them, who do not include gore into their vision to begin with. It's just like keeping Chibiskulks, 'B*o*b' and the whole rest out.

'No Gibs = hindered art'? Where did you get that one from?

MonsE covered the point about random marine skins nicer than I could.

actually, you cannot change your skin now, due to RC9. You can with cheats on, but otherwise no. Seriously though, does it matter at all... you DO NOT see YOURSELF, EVER.

wow complaining about something so irrelevant. If anything it makes the game more immersive.

bodies last for a shorter time then it takes for you to respawn and point out where you died.

Nem already stated this effectively, but though blood and gore may be part of your artistic vision, it's pretty presumptuous to assume that they're part of Flay's, and he's sacrificing it to appeal to a broader community. Read through the game design doc at http://www.overmind.org and find a single reference to excessive amounts of gore being integral to the game.

I love the argument, too-- "I want to play myself!" . . . unless you're a tall, jacked, armored, well-trained space warrior, your physical appearance is so far removed from the character's already that the skin color is hardly a deal breaker.

And to equate random skin selection with affirmative action . . . just means that you don't really know what affirmative action is, beyond recognizing it as an inflammatory buzzword.

I shall address your points one by one.

    - Re, censorship. These are not public forums, they are moderated. You do not have a right to post, it is a privilege. We moderate the forums because we think the benefit gained (community, friendly environment) is a good tradeoff vs. the totally free speech you require. If you want totally free speech, go yell out side or go to any other of the 1000s of forums on the net without moderation. This is our home, and we're allowing you to enter it.

    - Re, blood and gore. Maybe your artistic vision includes blood and gore, but mine does not. If you make a game, feel free to include all the dismemberment and gore you care to. There are a million games out there that include this.

    - The decision to not allow people to change their skin is mostly because I want to make a (however small) statement that skin color doesn't matter. Your skin is chosen randomly and gameplay is not altered. This means there will always be a mix of players on your team and together they will unite to fight the larger threat. What's worse, not allowing you to choose, or allowing you to choose because one is "better" (for gameplay or aesthetic reasons)?

Plus the exploits involved in allowing you to change skins and the interface that he would need to make. Not worth the time.

OK, this is one thing that kinda annoys me, I do NOT mind what skin colour I am (full-stop). Look at the thing known as REAL LIFE! and you will see we don't all look the same, we are not all the same skin colour! This random skin rant is compleatly Bull-Poo.

I do not mind the moderation on the boards and I stick by the Mods and Flay in the good work they are doing on these boards.

I do not mind the fact there is no gore, you do NOT need it, in REAL LIFE (there it is again) when you get shot you (usually) don't spray the entire contents of one artery over a wall, there is a little puft and you die, simple, (Yes there is blood in a pool afterwards usually, that leaks as the blood has nowhere else to go) and anyway, do you notice the blood in an on-line game?

On a completely OT moment, people with darker skin are better at resisting harmful UV rays and have an innumity to Sickle Cell Anemia (I think) Just a bit of info for you!

flayra it would be nice if you actually read my post, I said we have no rights i was expressing my beliefs free speech is far too restricted here

alright I knew i shouldn't have used blood in my example cause of tunnel vision, soon as people see blood they don't even read the whole sentence. I was complaining cause i've seen at least a dozen ideas trampled with "too mature for our target audience"

okay the affirmitive action reference was a little stretched, I had just got home from having a heated debate about it at school and well... bad timing to read that new feature i guess. Still I think I should be able to play myself, and I still think the whole random skin thing is political correctness run amok

Alright, i know this doesn't go in the category of intelligent rebuttals. But you know, the black guy is always the coolest guy in the movies so you are lucky if you get to be a dark skin in the game! at least thats how ill feel.

searching threads..... hmm well i may have a problem, so far all the threads I've found revolved around a gore issue.... this may be one of those things that got on my nerves and got exagerated in my memory.... I apologize if so ( although I will stand by the fact that in the previous posts you've said you cut out blood because you wanted to target a broader audience, this is the first time i've seen you say its cause thats what your artistic vision is)

how is it political correctness? Flayra said it himself he's trying to make a statement that skin color doesn't matter.

ahh the more I think about it it becomes more silly, I have to kinda apologize for going off on a rant, we had a debate in school about affirmitive action and I was labeled a racist for opposing it. I got home and read about the random skin thing and got VERY angry, plus i was getting a little annoyed with the censorship which seems to be getting worse lately, I went of like a friggin powderkeg.

[what the p word which is synonimous with angry is censored? ug my school has less censorship then this board]

    Or don't.

Right . . so therefore, the equality of races must be what, a forced contrivance of 'political correctness'? PC is all about artificial labels, not equality.

OK, good to see we're all getting - more or less - reasonable again.

About censorship - it's simple: With the broadening appeal of NS (and MonsE in possession of admin rights) the amount of locked / nuked stuff simply increased because the all around amount of postings increased.

BTW, there's a difference between political correctness and general acceptance towards diversity.
The later thing welcomes the occuring of different ethnics, the other one damns everything that doesn't.
