Monse or other sys admins help please

I got that window popped up on my desktop today, with no other programs running besides mIRC. I did some investigating and apparently its the same window that pops up when you use the NT command NET SEND. So I'm wondering, how do I disable the recieving of NET SEND's on my computer so I don't see this crap again?

Man it should be illegal for this kinda bs forced advertising :X

it's just a pop-up, you could download some pop-up blocking stuff. that might help

    its not a pop up

its some kind of messaging service I know 2k has. Someone bombed me with those.

You just have to change the permission on it. Its in your admin tools somewhere

goto control panel, admin tools, services and look for messager. Right click - properties and change from autmoatic to manual or disable.

Monse could advise a better way I'm sure.

i think this is the same problem that XP had, but it was fixed with the service pack or something. I don't know about NT though.

Silver is 100% correct. Stop your Messenger and Alerter services. Although cool guys do start | run |and type 'services.msc'

Handy hint - get a firewall, ideally a hardware one. Windows systems do have a tendency to leave a fair number of ports open by default, but I imagine MonsieurEvil will know all about securing such a machine. Ask him if you have any questions...

Probably the most annoying use of NET SEND I have discovered was when I was at university. It was possible to message all the computers in the university library (several hundred at least) and probably most of the rest of the campus. Every so often, every single machine in that part of Manchester would beep simultaneously, displaying some meaningless quotation, while some lone nerd would be running from a terminal somewhere. That would have been me.

Net send is very easy to do, all you need is notepad, open it type: net send (the persons ip who you are sending message to) (message)

    For example
    net send 127.0.0.1 Hello Derfud

then save as a .bat file, close the notepad, and open the bat file!

Or, you know... you could do it the easy way and type all that into a DOS prompt. Say it with me now.. DOS (DAHS).
