dec 2002. just failed my driving test and as we were going be going to watch LOTR:TTT later and as he lived closest to the cinema, ZIGGY^ says come round to mine and i'll show you NS.

go round to his house, sit in very comfortable chair (which i still like) look at his screen and im like "WTH? why are their teeth?", then he shows me all the differnet modes (commander, marine, and the alien evolutions etc) and im thinking "wow this has some serouisly good ideas in it, maybe i should listen to ziggy and play this".

but i didnt start playing untill september last year when i came to uni with my new pc and uber fast connection.

    thanks ZIGGY^ for ruining my midterms! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

My NS history is something like this, but it might not be accurate as it's been a bit since 1.0.

At the time, I was playing mostly CS and DoD 3.1. On the internet somewhere, I heard that something called "Natural Selection" had gone gold or something. I poked around, went to the website, and downloaded 1.0 on release or shortly after. Apparently it didn't interest me, because I didn't really play more than a few hours. I probably didn't like the complexity compared to CS/DoD. Around 2.0 release, I saw one of the ads for NS on Fileplanet or somewhere. I remembered it and DLed 2.0. Within a few hours I was hooked.

So, I could claim that I've played since 1.0, but I really haven't. I'd say it's now my favorite HL mod, and Combat is an interesting break from the normal NS gameplay.

I believe I was reading something about Shadowbane and some guy posted something about NS. Joined the forums and downloaded when I got back from outness on Halloween night. Myself and two other conferenced friends shouted on the phone as we ate marines at a ratio of 1:6 or something.

Oh to be young and stupid again. Ignorance is bliss.

Was hanging around in a chatroom and wanting some action for my trigger finger when someone suggested NS (at the time 1.04 I think), of course I hadnt heard of it before then and thought 'well why should I try this mod I never heard of' when it was mentioned that it mixed in a rts with the regular action. Suitably intrigued I went, downloaded, tried & have been usin it ever since.

Believe it or not I played my first game of NS on Nov 5th 2002...I remember it so well, it was amazing, of course...

Here is the post I made on my boards about the experience, I look back now and laugh at the references and the terms I used...
    <a href='http://www.kogakaiden.com/kcsaboard/viewtopic.php?t=858' target='_blank'>http://www.kogakaiden.com/kcsaboard/viewtopic.php?t=858</a>

Before NS I played CS for 2 years all of the time...

I still play both, with NS taking up most of my time.

I found NS shortly before 2.0... I forget how I stumbled upon it... I think I had just re-purchased half-life and was looking into mods for it... never liking CS much =P used to be a TF guy actually...

but once you go NS, you never go back :>

Was walking down the block past this internet cafe, and was always curious to what this place was about. Wandered in, heard a ton of shooting a la CS and gave it a shot. While playing CS there a few weeks later I read an article about NS in some gaming magazine. Downloaded it (1.04) one day and here I am now. Scary thing is I was dating this girl at the time, and started spending more time playing NS than with her.

Realized that I should either quit NS or break up with her.

.... I went on a date with different girl about a month ago.

There are a ton of women, but only one NS.

    Nice.

I found out about NS after my TFC days. I was a regular on one server (basically the ONLY server I'd join) for over 7 months, and was great friends with everyone there (back when I had a good sense of humor :\). But the owner of the BDU server, Thrash, started doing NOTHING but 2Fort, and I got ****, variety was one of my favorite things about TFC, and 2Fort got old quick. I tried out some CS 1.5, and was like, "Wow, this is kinda ****, but all these guns are hardcore sexy." So I started getting into it, and got tired of it pretty quick because of hackers (and was one of the major factors of me loosing touch with my sense of humor... Hackers killed my inner child) I was bored even moreso because now going back to the same 2Fort again was even more painful... So I decided to make a map, when to the Valve ERC, saw NS on the side, checked it out. I knew about it for a while before 1.04, but didn't bother to DL it until then, at which point I was an instant injection junkie. So, yeah...

P.S. Since a week ago, I downloaded a mod called Earth's Special Forces, and it almost instantly started eating all my NS and coding time.

    Hahaha. ESF. Woo go DBZ.
Neway. I was a starcraft player. Played it since it came out and became one of the best players on b.net. After 6 years of playing it, decided to finally pick up a new game. A week after NS came out, went to a Lan with friends. Knowing of my love for SC, they told me about NS. Started as a skulk on hera. hated it and left. Hours later saw friend play on a pub as commander. Was like "WTH strategy on half-life." *orgasm* Went home, learned it properly, pubbed, and the rest is history.

My friend showed it to me one day when he just got it. It was great we both had no clue what to do. Its like omg why do I have teeth and then its like WTH is that fat thing. Then its like how do i get ammo. Hey give me one of those big guns. Hey how come your not listening to me commander.

Those were the good ole days of being a nub.

I read about NS around June before it came out ,on my TFC CLan forums, but it sounded lame to me so I passed up looking into it and got into S&I. I just happened to be at a Halloween LAN party and a friend put it on disc for me after teaching me the basics of the game at the party, so by random luck I got it on release.
  • Crono5Crono5 Join Date: 2003-07-22 Member: 18357Members
    Nice.
P.S. Is S&I any good? Does anyone still play it?

I started when it first came out. I remember dling it at a LAN party (we were lookin for actually good new mods and we were bored.) and as soon as we installed it and checked it out, we were addicted <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> !

I never knew about Natural Selection till almost a week after its first release on halloween. A friend at school was saying to me that it looked like something cool and asked me about it. Since I didn't know either, I decided to see for myself.

I have been playing since 1.0 and haven't stopped yet. I told my friend I had found gold, but he apparently never found the "time" to download and try it himself. He went on to play countless hours of fy_iceworld, while I was trying my best to paralyze the invincible Jetpack Squadron with my Onos. Ahhhh, memories.

S&I is pretty fun, especially if you play with friends. I fall in and out of love with it over the years.

Friend told me about it, long, long, time before it was released. About a year later I was bored trying to figure out a site to go to, then I remembered NS, and it just so happened it was a day before the first release.

    ok heres my story. uhmm

ok yea i was getting bored with cs and sorts so i went to fileshack.com i was looking for mods of hl then i saw natural selection and i was intrigue by the summary i was like ALIENS COOL. then i decided against dling it then i dled firearms man that game blew so i was like ok 2nd shot i gave ns a try. lets just say me being in a cs clan and just leaving w/o telling em or ever hearing from me again is a good thing right? lol i just quit cs all together i was too obsessed with ns. but then that was like 1.0/1.03 not really sure. i remember seeing stopcommandermode and craps and playing at clan 216 and at std server when it was full lol.

I used to play CS but was fed up by the extreme lack of teamwork, and stat whoring.... so, I searched for teamwork oriented mods.

Firearms: Far back ago, it was still quite like CS..
Sven Coop: Fun game, but strange maps, bad netcode, and lack of action
Natural Selection 1.04: You know the story, I hope

    PS: Get ready for Flaytona!

i've been following the mod since it first went public, and the first release is what pulled me away from CS and DOD. I liked it so much, that i got several of the guys i hang around IRC into it, and we played it nightly almost religiously for months before it feel to the wayside. Everytime a new release hits we play for a few weeks, and it falls to the wayside for a bit, but this time i think ill stick with it.

As soon as I got broadband, I downloaded a few mods - NS was one of them.
