Maps And There Fps!

Ok ever sence that beta 3 has came out with these new changes almost all the maps have a lot worse FPS
i dont know if it is just me because i dont have a really great graphics card
but i have went from running 60fps to about 4fps on almost all maps

this is really cutting away from the fun factor for me and probaly others
expecialy when i am tring to <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> a <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif' /><!--endemo--> then i chase him into a room that i get 4 fps in then get my butt handed to me
i really hope that its just a bug in beta 3 and be fixed b4 the final release

but is there anyone else having this problem?

and is there anyway to fix this?

thx for your time and i hope you can help me and others with this problem

4 fps? That's really, really slow. What kind of system do you have? Do your other games experience similar dips in FPS? Are you using the latest set of video drivers.

I run NS at 1280 w/ 2xAA and 4xAF. I get a constant 60 (which is my FPSMAX), with dippings into the 30s under only the heaviest load (ie- the undefendable room in Siege007, filled with turrets, JPs, Onos, and whatever else.)

4 fps definitely can happen. It happens to me fairly frequently. I have a horrible video card, and I have a laptop so I can't really upgrade it. It usually only happens when there is a lot happening. However, in ns_metal, one of the hive rooms is mostly red, and it causes me to get really low fps. My average fps (beginning of the game, no players or structures nearby) is about 25.

    hmm...try this

    r_detailtextures 0

If not, make sure you're playing in OpenGL, and be sure your videocard fan isn't malfunctioning.

Well, make sure you're using the renderer your graphics card supports, anyway. When I had a Compaq 735Mhz Celeron, it came with an integrated i875 graphics chipset. OpenGL didn't work for me, Direct3D got better frames (I used to get like.. 3 fps in 1.04 ^_^) Of course, now I got a Radeon 9200 and can play in 1024x768 (vs. 640x480) with 16x ASF with constant 60. Man, 735Mhz to 2,867.2Mhz (2.8 Ghz) with HT is the best leap I've ever made...

Currently absolutely none of the official maps are using the detail textures, so that wouldn't help one bit.

One thing that may help you determine if it is the maps, or other factors, is load NS up with -dev and developer 1 (in the console), then type "r_speeds 2" in the console and watch the w_poly number.

If that goes about 800 (which it shouldn't, there's strict guidelines to mapping in NS) you may have found your problem. But we're talking w_polys between 1,200-2,000 that are going to cause a noticeable drop in FPS, and 2,000+ will cause a significant loss.

One thing to bear in mind, just having r_speeds 2 enabled will drop your fps slightly, only by 3-5 or something, because it's updated constantly, so can cause even the biggest of machines to lag.

Clearly your computer is just a bit crap. At the very least, get at least 384 RAM.
Also, play in servers with that have the lowest ping possible.

I know, I set it at 60. Anything more is a waste, imo.

There are some rooms, like Port Engine hive (nancy) that I hate spawning in, because I have to get out before I can have a semi-smooth game. It is the rooms themselves, because it stops as soon as I leave and starts again as soon as I enter. This could easily be a result of me having a crappy video card, in which case I will just have to live with it. I never had problems with specific rooms in 1.04 or 2.01, so I don't understand how it is worse now.

    The refresh rate? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That flickers like nuts unless your on a LCD. When I didn't know better I used to get head aches from gaming because of the flicker, now I refuse to use <75 Hz for anything on a CRT and I won't get a head ache even if I sit there for the entire day.

Well, if you're getting low FPS, just make sure your graphical tweaks are off, you're using your computer's most efficent renderer (it could be software mode), run in 16-bit color, and if you're still getting crappeh FPS, lower your resolution. Lower it to the point where you can barely see the room over the chat, if you have too. Mine was like 512x300 or something <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->

In 1.04, I tried using sotfware and OpenGL, I would do all of the tweaks listed in the tech support topic, I would run at 400x300, and still not get much above 30 fps. I am just doomed. However, the really low fps in Port Engine hive is new for me in 3.0.

i dont really know what they did to make maps fps to get like that
i never had any problems in beta 2 but now in beta 3 its very hard

There's nothing wrong with Port Engine hive.

You just need to get off your arse, work, earn money, and buy a computer that isn't 5 years old.

    for me its beta 3.

in beta 2 and below, as well as all other games i would expect 60 solid fps (monitor max).

with this one im not getting over 30 (seriously) and as low as 4.

Its happened to me on one of the maps(cant remember the name), I have a 10ping but my fps is about 10 too :/

Im running a p4 3ghz with some 128meg card, and its only started with beta 3 and only one map.

Oh and I try to keep mine at 85 FPS so i have that split second extra

Oh and i think the speed & therefore distance of leap is still dependant on your FPS <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

(i was playing a map with a lot of smoke in it and whenever my FPS got lower my leap wouldn't go as fast)

Steam breaks the 100 FPS barrier. The old Half Life had the 100 FPS limit, but Steam will report FPS's higher than 100.

I just upgraded to a 2600 Barton (512mb DDR, GeForce4Ti) from a 1.3 Thunderbird , but my FPS never goes above 99, even if I stare at a blank wall in an empty map.

    Can anyone verify this?

As far as I know, Steam HL has higher sysreqs than regular HL. I'd wager a lot of your issues stem from there.
