Headphones And Microphones

Collect the set, or die!
These are things the marines simply cannot do without, headphones and microphones. They don't make you a better player, they make you a better team. Have you had a commander without a mic? Annoying isnt it. Its hard to get people to work in a coherent mass when you are fingertyping a list of orders that only half of them will read. Yeah I know, waypoints are good too, but its nice to be filled in on the whole plan. And headphones are necessary when in dark corners and the like. Trying to locate a skulk in a dark room without sound just plain sucks at the start of any game.

My suggestion would be for everybody to go down to radio shack or future shop and shell out 25$ for a pair of these baby's

Your team will thank you.

    well eh, yes, i concur.

but a mic is not a guarantee for a co-operating team as comm, just a stimulator.

1000% agree. NS should detect to see if you have a mic before letting you get in the chair

You can shell out $25 at RS for those or go to Wal-Mart (I've noticed, most RS are near Wally Worlds...) and shell out like $10 or so and get a cheaper set of headgear that does the exact same thing...

P.S. In some instances, it does make you a better player. You can expect things better and know what's comming at you. Wouldn't believe how many times players with good ears and a pair of headphones are called hackers because they hear that skulk running along the wall instead of walking.

I use my microphones while playing, but never really the headset...I just wear it to talk! Does it help to hear things if you use the headset?

It helps, a lot. It gives you a poor man's surround system. With a headset, you can hear the sutle sounds of a skulk wall walking, and the direction it's comming from. Try them out for a bit and you'll see what I mean. You'll be comming through a door, looking up instantly and wasting that skulk and being called ")MG HAX)RZ!!! ADMI(N B AN HIM!!!!1"

That's still the greatest thing I hear, especially from the newer players.

Headsets are so worth the money for them. My suggestion for any FPS is to get a medium quality headset with noise canceling around $30 to $50. They are so much better than speakers even though they can be loud and impressive.

Playing with voice_scale 0 is far better than listening to whiny 10 yr olds peeing their pants seeing 'TEH MONSTER!!!'.

i totally agree. Headsets are a must for Natural Selection. I use mine soo often. Even if I´m not comm. It makes your life a lot easier. Hmm the price... i bought mine for 10?-->about 12$?
that are really peanuts. so go and buy a cheap one if you don´t allready have a mic

Actually headphones do make a better player. Not sure about mic though, probably gets you killed more often than not if you don't have a hands free mic. Even if you have a good setup and a key close to one of the games keys, you'll probably still get distracted enough eventually to get wasted. Still though, a good pair of headphones = motion tracking.

If you have an A3D sound card and A3D enabled that's even more hax-o-rific. Damn creative killed A3D which was clearly supperior to that EAX environment crap, A3D gives you much better spacial awareness and not just a rather cool/(at times annoying) echo.

I personally can't stand headsets. Mostly because they come with crap microphones and crap head phones. I would MUCH rather have good headphones and a "discrete" microphone even if it means reaching over and grabbing it when I need to talk(on the plus side, people allways hear what I'm saying because the noise level is low and the clarity is very nice with a decent microphone even with the quite heavy compression, but they also get to hear my annoying swedish accent(it gets even worse when I try to speak spanish )).

I'm using my friend's Sony MDR-150's right now, and BOY they are useful. Almost like a wallhack; no skulk is safe from me with "teh shotteh" now!

Headsets are uneccessary, actually. When I play NS I actually have two "headsets" on; the headphones, and another headset with a mic. The mic headset is actually only single-ear, and if you put them over your regular headphones (using the headphones for audio, of course), you've got yourself a mic + good headphones. The mic headset I'm using right now I actually picked up at Fry's a while ago; they were having a 100% rebate on some voice-dictation software so I picked up a box and got a mic for free!

I do the same thing. I have a cheap headset I got at NewEgg for $7 which has an extremely clear microphone... I wear the headphones around my neck with the mic in front of me, then put my good Sony headphones on over it. Kinda sucks when you have to dash to the bathroom but I haven't found anything else that I like better.

If you want a really good set of headphones with a mic, head over to Best Buy and get an Altec Lansing AHS 502 set. I got mine, with a 2-year waranty, for 50$. The sound is really great for pinpointing your foe's location, and the mic is top-notch. If 40-50$ is a tad much for you, check out amazon for a 25-30$ pair.

ok i don´t want to open a new thread for this one...so i guess it does fit in here:

TS2 Problems...i can´t speak in TS2 and at the Server the same time...Either I start TS2 first...this will make it possible to talk in TS2...or i join the server first...this will make it impossible for me to talk in TS2...it gives me an error: Invalid Headset...darn! My friends are able to use both at the same time...why is it impossible for me? is there any solution?

haha you people make me SICK...

cost of MY microphone..... about 15 cents... for glue... and plywood..

    OBSERVE:

(took the old mic out of my boom box... used an old extension cord wire and snagged a jack from a bin downstairs and soldered in a switch..... the result:

It's probably your sound card. Some sound cards don't allow the microphone to be used by two applications at once. My Sound Blaster Audigy 2 does allow the microphone to be shared. My Sound Baster Live! did not.

a mic can make you a better player, and a worse...depending on how you use it

I dont like using mt mic, i feel like a prat

and ive never been one to shout at a game

ive heard people shoutng like "GOOD GOD MOVE MOVE MOVE "etc... i just dont get that hyped up about a computer game enough to shout down the mic ther for typing away is nice

Its even worse when they start slagging you off on mic becuase you did something wrong its like

"YOU BOSTORD YOU WERE MEANT TO COVER ME"

usually i type back.. "look, a window , look outside, LOOK GO OUTSIDE!"
