Computer Clock Issue

it randomly sets itself back....
every once in a while -- every few days or so -- I'll turn on my computer and notice the windows clock is exactly 3 hours behind. the minutes and seconds are fine so it's not, like, a timing problem... but I have no clue what's going on. the clock just mysteriously jumps back 3 hours, I set it forward again, and it's fine for a day or two til it happens again... I have yet to see it go back further than three hours; yesterday though, I think it set itself back just one hour...

so, anyone ever hear of something like this? think I've got a particular piece of software that might be doing it? yes, I virus scan and spyware scan often, so that's not it...

hmm, maybe there's something on the computer that is changing your timezone settings, though that wouldn't explain it doing it regularly.

Another possibility is that the motherboard battery is dead, and you'll either change it, change the board, or live with it. Better change it, as that battery is also important for the CMOS

If the battery was dead, he'd get a CMOS checksum faliure at boot...

My best bet was a virus but if you've already scanned... Hmm...

EDIT: Typo.

a localised fluctuation in the time-space continum means that your computer looses some hours. move your computer. that will fix it, unless there is something inside your computer that is acting as a sort of lens, focusing the large, dissipated flucutation onto a point where it has a noticable effect. move your computer, and see what happens, then report back.

if it's the bat. then everything else must be acting strangly, if the bat. is empty then your computer will see everything new at boot.
I got 1 box running with a dead battery and 1 box with 4 exploded condensators.
sounds more like a program you recently installed that changes your cmos cuz it's correcting in hours only so it must be something to do with CET or GMT settings that is syncronized by a program.

if it was the battery, I'd think I'd have other problems, yeah... or at the very least, I'd be losing some minutes here and there instead of exact hours...

the time zone thing sounds the most feasable, I'll investigate when I get home... either that or Bogglesteinsky's wormhole theory... ;P

Bogglesteinsky's wormhole?

I had a pretty severe battery problem with my laptop. I dropped it once (it was VERY old, no worries) and the battery refuses to store charge so I had to set up the BIOS everytime I switched it on

Have you got any date/time software? Is it configured to the right region?

oddly enough, my time zone was set to pacific when I'm eastern, which is a 3 hour difference... so it may be fixed... thanks for the input guys, wouldn't have thought of that without you, I'll revive this thread if it crops up again and I need more help ;P

I'm having a problem with my clock too... only mine is running about twice as fast as it should be. If I leave the computer off overnight and then boot it up, the time is what it should be, so it's a Windows thing, not a CMOS or battery issue methinks. I checked for viruses and didnt find any. I also removed the spyware stuff that came up on Spybot. Anyone have any idea why it would be running that fast? I'm running Windows XP with SP1 and I have an unlocked AthlonXP Barton core. Would the fact that I have the multiplier unlocked be affecting this? When I started up my comp the first time, it registered the processor at 133 x 10.5, when in actuality, it should have been 200 x 10.5, which is what I set it to.

well if this is a new computah you just buyed then i can only say that the vendor of it delivers bad service.
i dunno what mb you have but if you can make a choice between manual or software jumpersettings for clocking the I would check them first.
maybe the speed of your memory is set to high wich forces the cpu to a different speed, maybe your memory is to fast for your compu.

i have a (broken but still working!) duron 700 that is able to run at 933 by adjusting the 64pc100 memoryjumper to 64pc133 on the mainboard.

OK, so I built my comp BY HAND, only about 6 months old... so my MOBO battery is fine... but my clock goes exactly two hours behind, I have checked my region settings and it is set correctly, to Tijuana (Where I am, well OK not IN Tijuana but I'm in that time zone, anyway) I am at a loss, very weird...

Try disabling the Windows Time service. Odds are, you know how your time is set anyway.

I believe this can be done by double-clicking the clock icon in the system tray within Windows XP. I don't have XP available to me at this point, however.

If you're running Windows XP, your computer is probably restting itself by the timezone you have selected. To change what timezone your computer is set in:
1) right click the clock on the bottom right corner of your screen.
2) Select "Adjust Date & Time"
3) Click the "Time Zone" tab
4) Select the right time
5) Adjust your clock to show the correct time
6) Click OK
7) Enjoy life.

Hope that helps!

I suspected it was something like that. When I came onto this forum it was 5 hours behind me then I checked my timezone settings. Glad to be of help.
