Joystick And Pov 'jitters' Problem

WeltschmerzWeltschmerz Join Date: 2003-09-03 Member: 20538Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Move but no buttons, and sputter-view...</div> So... I've been hacking my way through the STEAM/3.0_3 install. Overcome several strangenesses, avoided several other lethal ones, and I'm in Steam and onto servers and playing, BUT:

1: My joystick, which worked perfectly in NS2.whatever, still allows me to MOVE around (I look with mouse), but the buttons on it don't seem to work anymore, in setting either HL or NS Options, or while playing. The Joystick is attached, calibrated, I've got joystick.cfg (which allows this joy/mouse setup), hopefully in the right place.... just no button-usage.

2: My view 'jitters'. sometimes I just can't go into a certain area, or leave it, or I end up covering the same exact ground ten times in as many seconds, or my movement (using KB or joystick) isn't controllable- can't stop or start reliably when I need to. I don't even know what my avatar is doing while this happens, or if it's just holding still and only my point of view is shaking forward and back...

Considering the horror stories I've been reading, I guess I've been lucky it's been as easy as it has, so far... Almost there!.... help, anyone?

    interesting....

I unfortunatly know NOTHING about JSticks with HL or Steam....

What I would suggest doing is removing all configs (you can rename them to .bak instead of .cfg if you wana save em)

Then launch NS 3.0 B3, from there attempt to do a full config in the gui (check the enable joystick box etc), and then create a LAN game and see if it works whe nyou know there are no network problems.

Things have changed between WON and Steam (configs and such) this might do sometihng.

Als try doing the sametihng with other mods via steam (see if you can get a jstick wokring there).

    Thanks. Did a little research...

First, I had NS2.whatever set for Joystick move and Mouse look-around. The following file (joystick.cfg), dropped into the valve folder, allowed me to do this for starters. If you don't have this file, you can use notepad to type it in and save it with this name and as a cfg.

    joyadvanced 1.0
    joyadvaxisx 3
    joyadvaxisy 1
    joyforwardsensitivity -1.0
    joysidesensitivity 1.0
    joyforwardthreshold 0.10
    joysidethreshold 0.10
    joyadvancedupdate

So NS2.0 was set for Joystick input, and that transferred over to steam, apparently lodging the following (among all the other code settings) in config.cfg- also shows what I had my joystick set to be doing.

    bind "JOY1" "+use"
    bind "JOY2" "+jump"
    bind "JOY3" "+reload"
    bind "JOY4" "+voicerecord"

When I first went to Steam, both Halflife and NS showed (in options) that JOY1, etc, were in their proper settings under Keyboard. BUT, because the buttons weren't currently working I couldn't 'update' or switch them around. Doing anything took JOYs out because I couldn't refresh the entry.

Anyway, I checked just HL: joystick buttons working. NS, not working. So I added the four bind lines to joystick.cfg and dropped this file into both Steam/config AND steam apps/your email/halflife/valve. Then just to be sure, I created a file called userconfig.cfg (per instructions at the head of config.cfg) with just the four bind lines, putting it in steam apps/your email/halflife/valve.

Couldn't tell you why this worked exactly, but it seemed like it should have, and it did.

Now, on to the other problem... my POV doing the ChowChowChow really fast...

    Update:

The screen shake seems to be a lag-related problem.. It's almost like the server keeps trying to put me right back where I was when my joystick movement started. It also happens with Keyboard arrows. It doesn't happen in HL (very smooth, even in STEAM), doesn't happen on a single-player LAN NS game, just on other servers; Combat or 3.0, either. I get a tiny bit of a shake in readyrooms, but then when I enter the game it's almost like "two steps forward, one step back" (in any direction I try to go), to get most places. Sometimes I can try to get from point A to B (say, a ten-foot walk) for literally 20 or 30 seconds, and not make it there. Sometimes jumping or crouching at the same time helps, sometimes not... Often the shake is two or three times/second. Usually If I stand still though, everything's fine. And in SOME areas of some maps, I can run around just fine. It mostly seems like the more stuff is onscreen, the less progress I can make in any direction. Another clue is that my typed messages (forget even trying mic) take awhile to come up. Sometimes they don't come up at all. I can see and hear everyone else fine, realtime it looks like.

My computer is just about brand-new:
    2.8Ghz Athlon
    1GB Memory, Dual-channel 400Hz
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 128MB DDR card
All Windows (XP Pro) and Video drivers updated.
    Defragged
The joystick is old: Gravis Blackhawk, but it's been working fine...

So it looks like this is a network/steam issue...

    Input? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Thanks.

I guess no one has further ideas? I can't get on the Steam forums, using the info I set up my account via NS with... do they require different sets of username/passwords?

    Thx-

did you check you internet settings?
  • WeltschmerzWeltschmerz Join Date: 2003-09-03 Member: 20538Members
What would you recommend? I check Internet settings, most of the time nothing's there but I'm on servers anyway, setting it to DSL 256 or 768 doesn't help I have cable broadband).... anything else I should tweak or change or drop into userconfig?

I've also noticed that, sometimes this 'two steps forward, two steps back' thing is worse just getting into or out of certain rooms, and is really worst when there's other folks on the map. It looks like lag, but... gah. One last thing to conquer before getting to like, PLAY....

    Thanks.. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
