<div class="IPBDescription">What could possibly be wrong?</div> Lately when I use voice comm, people tell me I'm breaking up alot. I don't know what the cause is. They say it's not just the audio being fuzzy, my name is actually blinking in and out, meaning there's periods about every other word or so where no signal is reaching the server. I've checked the actual button I hold down for voice comm, and the icon on my end shows up steady, so this isn't because the signal isn't being sent consistently. It's just not being received properly by the server for some reason.
Is there any way to tell what the problem is here? Is it something wrong with my connection, something wrong with steam, something wrong with the server? What's the deal?

like try sound recorder or something
I also find that raising these to 30-70 will remove mic skipping....
try it and tell me if it works
p.s. i dont know what these commands do exactly, i just know that changing tham reduces choke. lag, ect... and that if i up them my mic skip disappears

You can determine whether it is at your end through voice comm. If everyone else is also breaking up, and has large pings, it is the server. If not, there is something wrong on your end.
If it is your end, first check for packetloss by pinging the server a hundred times or so. Open up a command prompt and type "ping -n 100 <server's ip>". This will take about 2 minutes, so find something to do until it's done. The result should appear like this:
<!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->

Ping statistics for 207.200.24.214:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 31ms, Maximum = 32ms, Average = 31ms

Obviously, some packetloss is acceptable, but I'd say anything more than 10% could produce your mic problems. You can try to reduce packetloss on your end by:
Closing file-transfer programs, (kazaa, automatic updates, etc.)
Lowering CPU usage,
Telling others on your network to stop downloading,
and so on...
If you get bad packetloss to lots of servers, I recommend testing your ISP's gateway. If you get bad packetloss connecting to your ISP, and you aren't running things on your end, you definitely need a new ISP.
If there's no packetloss, yet you're still getting skip, try to tweak your network settings in Halflife.
cl_cmdrate 100 may not be very fair to 56k pplz :S

Only madmen and fools attempt to use Steam with 56k. Furthermore, even if it somehow isn't fair, it doesn't matter, because we aren't talking about me coding in junk for an unfair advantage, it's me fixing something so that I have full basic functionality.
Could anyone having problems please make note of sound card? I've seen that most other players with this problem are using audigy 1's and 2's.
