Will NS ever go retail like CS did?

<div class="IPBDescription">I couldn't find a straight answer on FAQ</div>please dont lock this tell i get a straight awnser.
I know the FAQ said natural selection will always be free, but will it ever go retail like CS did, pbeing able to support other mods, having its own CD key and such? I think the team would benifit from this, and it would go by what it said by "NS will always be free" but technicly it wouldent be cuz youd have to own HL or CS to install it. but I would buy it if it came out retail.

Actually the FAQ says that if anyone wants to put NS in a box and pay the NS team royalties then they can do, if Flayra agress, but it will always be d/lable as a mod, so always free

My personal opinion on this topic:

NS <i>will</i> make it to the shelves in a way or another. No publisher with a brain worth beans would let that opportunity go by.

Seeing that this could mean Sierra getting their grubby fingers on Flayras code, I sincerely hope he'll find another way, though.

nem : spend $80000 and buy the engine source then u can release it without needing to open any of the code to sierra....becouse u can choose a other publisher <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Don't ever worry about being forcibly charged for NS. Flay is way too much of a hippy for that...

Monse is secretly plotting to murder Flayra using his marine training, then stashing the body, stealing the NS code, and selling it to valve.

Upon gaining NS, they'll give Aliens the ability to plant bio-logical bombs, or the marines the ability to plant mini-nukes, at certain sections of the map, alternating each map. It is the opposing team's job to assure that the aliens/marines don't complete construction of the bomb.

    Also to be added:

    - AWP-like rifle for Marines.
    - AWP-like spit for A NEW alien class, that looks like an infested marine!
    - Locational Damage!
    - Drivable Vehicles
    - Ability to purchase a giant mech for Marine team
    - Hives can suicide
    - Once you die during a round, you sit in spectator and follow, in FPS view only, a Bot, which will follow the commander's orders to a T, instead of your inferior human carcass!
    - Cheese
And Finally, The Coolest feature of CS: NS,

    Aliens wear Skimasks! It's ub3r l337!

You couldn't find a straight answer on the FAQ, you say? What does "NS will always be available as a free download" mean then?

Sierra ain't Valve, and Valve ain't Sierra.

I like one, but do not care for the other (guess)

If Valve provides 80% of Sierra's revenue, then the question of who holds the gauntlet has an uncertain answer.

really depends on how the mod went goes over. if people like it maybe. but you have to face the fact halflife is dying. i really doubt NS will go retail.

    lol.
Yeah - HL is dying all right.  lol.

Sales may be dwindling, but that's because everyone on earth has a copy or two already.

I don't believe Half-life is dying, nor will any time soon (At least until HL2 hits the shelves.)

And here's why. This may not be a popular view, and people may disagree with it, but I personally feel its fundamentally true.

Games <b>do not need</b> to get any more detailed, advanced, realistic, or complicated to make them enjoyable. Half-life is, in my opinion, an example of a perfect game, where it doesnt age over time and can be modified within its boundaries so heavily as to be able to create an endless stream of different games.
Sure, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of extra memory go into the game allowing for larger quantities of entities, and perhaps the polygon rendering could be improved apon so mappers don't have to pull their hair out trying to keep their r_speeds below 700, but otherwise I am perfectly happy with HL as it is, and I don't feel a need to shun it away to look at brand spanking new engines.

Having said that, they say bigger is better so roll on Doom3. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

If the NS team released NS retail, I'd be happy for them.  They certainly deserve it. =)

And Quigly....   Never mind, I'm not gonna ask.

a couple clarifications....  The modding community for halflife is stable, some mods die, some new ones are announced.  People are looking into the new UT engine, but only a couple of already hl mods, that i know of, have moved to UT.  The player base for hl is bigger then all other fps player bases.  With all the players of all hl and subsequent mods the player base is so much bigger then even the next most popular game, just take a look at the gamespy server and player stats on that stat page thingy (sorry i dont know the url)  Anyways, my only point is that number wise hl is not dying and is still going strong (i think we already argued this in the forums once).

The other thing i wanted to mention was that sierra could quite possibly be out of the picture when dealing with anything valve related quite soon.  I dont know how long their contract is but steam (such a beautiful thing) makes it possible for valve to skip over a publisher.  So, if NS did go retail its quite possible sierra wouldn't be packaging it...  (btw, NS is on steam  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> while steam is in beta, get all your friends, who dont own hl, to play ns with us because right now ITS FREE. Alot of people don't know that you dont have to own anything of valves to use the steam beta.  www.steampowered.com)

Valve should be pretty much done with Sierra soon with the addition of Steam technology and the master auth servers switching from WON (a sierra owned entity) to an in-house one.

Each year more copies of Half-Life are sold then in the previous year, or something like that. HL is not dying.

VALVe has stated that even with STEAM you will be able to buy the game in the store still.
