BonelessBoneless Join Date: 2002-09-03 Member: 1270Members
Whats the minimum players for a good NS Match... I need to know it to set a reasonable maxplayers value in my future NS servers. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

BTW, hope to see a good default server.cfg... I dont wanna figure how the cvars affect the gameplay the first day.

    I would say a good maxplayers for a typical server would be 16. I would think the great minds of the Dev team would be able to sort out a little thing like the server.cfg file, no? <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    The max players is 32, but a more reasonable number on most maps is 20-24. If your server is very old or on a rather iffy circuit, the max should be around 12-16. The minimum sized game I've been able to see effectively played is 4 v 4, but it's a bit slow. More is better - indicative of a teamplay game, as opposed to 2 v 2 'CSDM'. The networking pieces Flay wrote are very, very good. You will not experience any appreciable lag on even very slow connections as a player.

    i would say a good amount of people of NS would be about 8 vs 8 because it is not to much and not to less... and that is not from experience i just think it would be good! <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    8v8 seems small for ns
    i'd say 10v10 or over ^_^

    Having played it... 7-8/team is lovely.  Over 12 is a bit crowded, even on the big maps (and *especially* on the small maps).

    I'm interested to see how the standard 5v5 works in tournament play.  I think it's pretty tight, as the position and actions of each player really matters.  It's less action, but each death could really matter.

    Standard 5v5? 5 v 5 is only standard for CS. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    Yep. 5 vs 5 is a standard only for CS... TFC is 8vs 8, DoD is 6 vs 6...

    Well... I'll try 10 vs 10 and 12 vs 12 for public servers. (I mean no clan match).

    /me sits and waits for Linux binaries...

    I would think 6v6 would be at least required for NS.  5v5 I don't think would be fun because of the size of the maps.  5v5 can be accomplished in CS because the maps are so small and not very complex.  The 6v6 7v7 8v8 range would probably be the best for a match.

    it'd be nice to see 10v10 in matches <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    ns is recommended for 6on6? boo.............. my poor server heheh

    btw no windows dedicated server? <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

    with all the features, i think 10 v 10 would be the only way to get the full ns experience, i mean, the commander can't really command 7 troops to be as effective as 9 troops

    The Windows dedicated server files for Natural Selection are included with the client installer. Check in your Half-Life/ folder and you should see hlds.exe. That is the Windows dedicated server.

    I know I have never played NS but 6vs6 seems kinda wimpy, lets sort it out:
    Marines: 3 players
    1st player:commander
    2nd player:soldier/engineer
    3rd player:HA???

    Aliens: also with 3 players
    Builder:
    RegAlien
    RegAlien

    Is that really enough? And what if there are not enough servers because games are too small and people can't get in, that would really be poopy:( But I have faith... I just wanna know what a 32 player game is like?

    /me shakes his head.

    6vs6.  That means 6 players <i>per team</i>, not 3.

    That's also why I have an extra spot for the commander. So it's 6 Marines vs. 5 Aliens. With one Marine being the commander, it evens out the number of players on the field.
  • FlayraFlayra Game Director, Unknown Worlds Entertainment San Francisco Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 3Super Administrators, NS2 Developer, Subnautica Developer
    The game was balanced for equal sized teams, so I wouldn't recommend adding an extra player slot for the commander.
  • EpochEpoch Join Date: 2002-10-10 Member: 1474Members
    So you would have it 1 commander and 4 marines vs. 5 aliens? That seems a little unbalanced to me, seeing as how the marines are short one player on the field. I'm not debating it, I just want to make sure that I understand you correctly. Am I understanding you correctly?
  • RhoadsToNowhereRhoadsToNowhere i r 8 Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 33Members
    That is correct.  In fact, a good commander looking overhead and dropping supplies and buildings for his marines can sometimes be even more useful than an extra player in the field, so you don't really need to worry about the marines being disadvantaged in combat.

    OK Rhoads, thanks for clearing that up. I just want to make sure that I'm keeping the playing field as level as possible.
