Precaching To Server Takes Forever

Problem is that ive just installed ns and when i try to join server it seems to crash...ie pauses for extended periods. only managed to connect once and had an extremely high ping, have tried 10 or so times on different servers.
Im using steam, currently playing DOD with no probs, have all patches installed for ns. puter spec is p4 2 gig with 32 mb nvidia, 256 mb ram and 600 k bb connection. Seems very strange how it wont join server...usually takes me 40 - 50 secs to join dod from start to finish, but this is taking 5 to 10 mins...?

uh oh, i know this problem, a clanmember of mine had it too.
It's a problem with your network settings and steam-ns.

Are you behind a router/firewall/server on a network?

As already mentioned it sounds like a network problem.
Maybe try posting in Steam's forums; http://steampowered.com/ See if you can get any help there.

    Try defragmenting your hard drive.

norton firewall hates half life/steam. I used to run it until i switched to xp a few years back. it will either time out connecting behind norton, or wont connect at all.

if you have xp, dump norton and use the xp firewall, its all you really need unless you have some seriously sensetive data on there. norton is annoying with all its program permissions etc etc. at least try it with norton off. if its still the same try fiddling with your network settings.

does it only occur on ns? if it does (and i hate saying this), try reinstalling ns and see if you get it working that way.
