I loved playing the aliens in Aliens vs Predator 2, especially the runner aliens. They were the weakest of the bunch but can still slice open a human with 2 strikes of their claws, they can also munch on the human brains with a well placed head bite.
The reason why I liked the runners was because they were the fastest, they can wall climb and they have incredible leaping abilities. The only reason why I stoped playing AvP2 because the combat felt too loose. It wasnt tight like the combat in CS or Day of Defeat not even as tight as Quake 3 <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo--> The combat in AvP2 didnt feel right, but I had a blast playing as the runner tearing up the marines.
I'm wondering if their is an alien in NS that most closely resembles the runner game play wise. I'm looking for a fast, wall climbing and high jumping alien that can quickly dispatch a marine.
One of the aliens ability was to run really quickly then leap up into the air like say 50 feet or so and then cling on to a wall or roof top then start running along on the walls. This was a great escape tactic and a great way to set up an ambush and jump on some marines. Can any alien do this in NS?
This game looks very promising and I can't wait till it comes out ... also 1 more question, can I install and play NS with my CS retail version or do I need to purchase the original Half-life?

And as for your second question, compatability with retail CS is fully supported, as well as those who bought the standalone BlueShift.

if this seems a bit harsh or stern its not anything because of you, its just because there have been a bajillion topics ranting and raving about this already, and there's no need to do that again. :)
and welcome to the NS community.
first hand, i'd say the combat is 'tight' since you are in constrained environments and the action is fast paced. you must remember that (at least) half this game is strategy, so you have to deal with things such as turrets and other variables.
But its hella easier in the ns way, trust me
Maybe I'm wrong.
EDIT: Looks like my opinion matches somewhat with PseudoKnight's, who's post I read right after posting this.

The original Half-Life is not a required purchase, but still highly suggested, for the single-player gameplay alone. Opposing Force, as well.
I know the style of play you are talking about, in my own way. I like sticking to shadows, watching the walls fall behind oh-so-quickly, attacking and disappearing up the wall and through the nearest vent before they can even swing their guns around, and bounding across a room. Such were some of my fondest memories from the time of Gloom.
The skulk is very much like this. Also, though, using different evolution chambers, you can change your skulk to perform the way you want him to. Faster, quieter, stronger, whatever you want. There are actually 1,000 different variations of changes for the skulk alone. (9 upgrades possible, in 4 stages each, and you can have any 3 at a time.)
So, yes, hopefully Natural Selection will hold something for you.
Welcome.

Tight game play is hard to explain and it's almost like a magic formula that you either get right by luck or design, or you miss completely. AvP2 lacks the little things that makes the game come together. AvP2 combat was a bit too lose.
The Skulk sounds like the alien I would like to play. Too bad there is no ability to improve it's pounce and jumping power.
I'm going to install my AvP2 game again and get some practice in using the Aliens. I know NS plays differently than AvP2 but that's as good as it gets.
Also when you make an improvement to your alien how long does it last? Does it last for the entire game till you log off or is it saved for your next games.
The amount you can improve your alien depends on how well your team is doing, basically, how many Hives and evolution chambers your team has. So help your team out, and you can improve more and more. And it stays saved until you die, at which point you can choose different evolutions (or the same ones over again).
Hope that makes sense.

When the aliens get a 2nd hive, the skulk gains a new ability called "Leap" that is similar to the pounce in AvP2, though it does not do a lot of damage, only about 20 or so. But a leap followed by a good bite = usually dead marine. ^_^
