What's strange is, I find myself typing in proper english with full puntuation and such now that I've been on this forum for a while. It kind of became second nature. :\
Despite being a spelling and grammar nazi myself, academic arguments about online spelling and grammar such as these, with no regard to practicality, serve no useful purpose.
Appropriate spelling depends on the context. When in Rome, do like a Roman. That's all there is to it. If you post in sub IRC-grade mish-mash on these forums, you'll come across as retarded. If you post with big words and complete sentences in a forum where sub IRC-grade mish-mash is the norm, you'll come across as arrogant (believe me, I know all about that. The same thing happens with speech mannerisms in real life.).
Ingame, the situation changes. You're in a combat situation; you have to communicate potentially vital information in as little time as possible. Speed is critical. Why do you think real military organisations have so many acroynms? Why do you think game communities have so many acronyms?
Anyway, you have to remember that the "u, ur, olol, kthxbai" style often comes about because if you have to search the keyboard and peck at the keys, typing "u" is much faster than "you", silly as it sounds. It's not pure laziness, at least not always. I can confirm that from having watched people type this kind of stuff, pecking at the keys. But if that's the standard where you interact, of course, that's what you'll pick up - fast typer or not. And that's still not individual laziness.
Still, at the end of the day, it's up to standards. In the case of board of this level, it is a case of how much care you want to put into your words. However, that's a decision to be made by the person posting, not the reader. If you want to sound authoritative, you take care to write your posts well. If you don't give a rat's rear end, you don't. It's silly to get annoyed about things like that.
Oh, and in terms of righteous posts like the original - what exactly are you trying to prove? Are you going to beat the illiterate masses into shape, one irate post at a time? That's not going to work, and you know it (well, I hope). Seldom are people convinced of your ideas by the shining truth of them, as you thrust them into their faces and expect them to accept them for the innate correctness of their content. Am I being grandiose enough to drive the point home?
Acronyms and initialisms are fine, but don't start with all this "pwned/owned/lam0r/***/kthxbai" rubbish, because I don't care even if you're joking; it's bent and unfunny.

Whenever I see someone use any kind of abbreviation like thx, u, l8r, c, or anything of the sort, I immediately take them for an idiot. They pretty much have to prove that they are not utterly retarded for me to respect them at all.
Kinda ticks me off when my friends talk like that to me over AIM because I know they're relatively smart people. I don't want to think they're idiotic, but when I say bye to them and they respond "c u l8r dewd," I just want to rip my hair out and scream at them.

There's nothing wrong with slang within proper context (i.e. "pwn" is perfectly acceptable slang on a gaming message board), just so long as its not written into a formal essay or etc.
