Seen this? Heard the sound effects?
Look, i don't mean to be anal or anything about this, but i once heard that Flay hired a custom sound engineer/sound effect designer guy for NS.
Well, there's a trailer out for a real horrorshow movie (fresh baked from Japan!) called Casshern. The Trailer may be found here. It's liveaction anime of sorts. I won't bother telling you all how zammechat it is, that's for you to come up with on your own. I'd also fairly wager that most of you have already seen it, but a quick search showed that the word "casshern" appears nowhere. (Keep in mind my search could have been messed up.)
ANYWAY, after my four hundreth watching of the trailer for this movie, i deduced that in no less than two places there are sound effects that i've heard in a familiar place... that of our very own, Natural-Selection.
In th beginning of the trailer, right after the Shochiku icon, there's a scene of a crowd cheering and waving flags. In the background, that oh-so-familiar mechanical ambient hum of machinery i recognise from NS.
The second place is shortly after the crowd-cheering scene in where there is an overview of a bunch of red-goopey looking vats which (if you look closely) contain things like vertibrae and ribs of humans, possibly referencing to the whole android/cyborg/robot takeover theme of the film.
I don't remember if this was from NS or not, but there's also a piece of flashing traffic lights, like with red glowing calligraphic symbols on them with a chiming sound. I think of NS when i hear them, but they may not have been used in the first place.
The whole purpose of this post is to point out to you (since this is the general forum and all that) that this awesome film is coming out next month, that you should watch the trailer thousands of times before it already does. It also exists (and i'm not pointing fingers here) to tell you that there are a fair number of sound effects i heard in the Casshern trailer that i know from NS.
Now i leave it up to you lot to talk about it and submit suppositions.
^_^

those 2 dont mix well with me :/
Or is it? *CONSPIRACY*
Anyone know anyone else that plays NS in Japan?
(i ask because we all know that everyone in Japan knows everyone else, so a connection between the sounds in Casshern and NS would be very easy. You know?)
LM
Sorry, but that's a pet peeve of mine. This topic comes up with some different, obscure name every week.
A) You play too much NS.
B) That movie looks great, any chance of someone sub-titling the trailer for me so I can know the plot? (Reminds me of an anime I saw)
Everyone knows that by now.
As previously stated, they're just "sound banks" that can be licensed then used. Radio stations use those all the time. They provide all the whizzes, bangs, zaps, etc, they use in their obnoxious call-tag/slogan things before and after announcments/what have you.
our friends in hollywood can spend the same $40.00, and get all the same sounds...
it's not a conspiracy, or a rip-off, it's a sound bank....
as for Ns sounds, i couldnt find any.
It seems that none of you has ever heard the "Wilhelm Scream"? Because I bet you have.

actually its the sound an alien resource tower makes when its just chillin, the one you listen for as a comm to identify the hive

Well, i can't speak the language, but i'm sure there's a fansub of it somewhere on the internet. However, lemmie paraphrase the story for you:
A man creates a race of robots.
The robots become intelligent and form their own city.
The robots, through some miscommunication or disagreement in diplomacy, declare war on the humans.
The humans, vastly outgunned, outmanuvered, and outmanned, become desparate.
The man who created the robots in the first place, with his permission, turns his son into a half-man/half-robot to destroy the robots, his father telling him of their weaknesses. He is the world's only hope.
This, being very engrish, was what my friend told me. It does make sense, and it fits the trailer, but i'm still unsure as to it's credibility. Bear in mind this also came before The Matrix and all it's splendor, so think of that before you call it a blatant ripoff.
Casshern was originally an anime which didn't make much money and was released sometime in the mid-90's. That was the plot for the anime. It may have changed.
My friend and i, who among other things can recite the entire Penny-Arcade Archive from beginning to end, remember that slip with the NVA mortar boat in Operation Dumbo Drop or the Stormtrooper slamming his head into the blastdoor in the original New Hope, but we can't remember our homework.
That's probably why i heard, or thought i heard, those sounds in Casshern coming from NS.
But like you said, it all comes from the same soundbank.

You're probably right. But either way, since I play grunt, all it means to me is easy pickin's.

Is it just me, or is the theme of "man creates robots, robots get smart and kill man, man fights robots in apocalyptic war" getting a little friggin' old? God...
No, Lina Minelli (I think that's her name) made both the CC voice and the Hivemind voice.
edit: her name is Lani Minella. Close enough

You forget yourself.
Casshern was one of the first to come up with it before The Matrix ever did. The whole Man-Creates-Robots-Robots-Kill-Man is actually a moral sci-fi argument that's been going on for a LONG time now, since the days of Ray Bradbury, and i think it deserves to be classified as it's own genre.
I think Terminator and T2 may have come before it, however. I don't know much about the anime. Can you link us to any resources on it, Digz?
