My friend is looking at getting this PC soon, told him to wait for more DX10 cards to push the price down but his old rig is pretty much dead now.

Any input on it?

Why anyone would buy an AMD processor is far beyond my knowledge. A Core2Duo is hilariously fast and overpowered for the price of any similar Advanced Micro Devices device.

If I had a million res nodes...

I'd build a comm chair in their hive.

SLi is the way to go tbh. Make sure the board has 2x full speed PCIe x16 slots, get a nice card now (or in the future), fit it as normal and use it. Then a year down the line, when the cards have either halved or quartered in price (amazing how fast things get cheaper...), then buy another one of the <i>same model</i> and SLi them.
You get the performance of the bleeding edge for ages and ages, for a fraction (ish) of the cost...

For 50 bucks more he could have himself a 6300, which would run circles aroung that AMD proc, and still have time left to dance a jig. The cheapest option is not always the most economic one; if you're doing the hard math, the $ per CPU cycle calculations say that you should end up with one of Intel's chips, not AMD's. That's just my advice, and nobody has to take it.

    This SLI still reminds of the good ol'days with 3DFX <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Intel > at the moment. Used to be the other way arround (with cheapers AMD cpus being faster), but yeh. Times change. Maybe AMD will come back with faster cpu's at lower mhz once again. But Intel is on a roll now, AMD is going to have a hard time stopping this landslide :/

Didn't we all say that about Intel having a hard time overcoming AMD not so long ago? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    The PSU needs moar jiggawatts.

Seriously, if he's going to upgrade later get a better PSU. Also check tests so that the bloody thing actualy gives what it sais.

    As said, Core2DUO get it.

For graphics, buy something cheap (well 7600 is rather cheap) then get a DX10 card when it has settled it (not just crysis).

Memory and HDD seems fine, tho I would recommend 2gb ram for a gameing rig today.

    It would be nice if we got a budget to work on <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Ahh, forgot about that.

I'll put this in large, obnoxious letters...

    <!--sizeo:7--><span style="font-size:36pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->never EVER scrimp on your PSU!!!!!<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Believe it or not, the £80-£100 area is an ENTRY level area for decent PSUs. Don't just look at the wattage. A Q-tec PSU says it can do 800w, but in reality, it's pushing little more than 250-300w.
Get a decent PSU, something like a Tagan, Enermax, or Hiper. Yeah, they may cost a load more than that cheap OEM one that's in the Dabs tower, but at least you know its going to do the job properly..
Insufficient balls in your PSU means stability problems which are very difficult to trace...

Heh, I know what you mean about your PSU, Iv got a Zalman 350W right now and this rig:

    Asus Mobo AGP
    2*512Mb DDR + 1*1Gb DDR
    Radeon x800Pro
    2*160Gb HD
    1*400Gb HD
    DvD Writer
Few PCI cards in there too
    3 Fans
    Temprature display

By my maths 350W is nowhere near enough for that!
In saying that my PSU/bits of my PC are on their last legs, poor thing is about 2 and a half/3 years old now and has been used a lot. Noticed load times and performance drop badly in the last 2 or 3 months and PSU replacement is top of my list followed by the Mobo and CPU, but at that point id rather scrap most of the last gen technology and upgrade, but my plan was to wait till Autum for that!

Anyway I'll pass this onto my mate. Oh and I managed to haggle him a 7900GT (cant remember which model, was £180 in the shops we checked localy) for £120 with delivery! Something iv found recently is that a lot of smaller companies are willing to let you haggle if you know what you are doing.

Not sure about all that... I've been running Thermaltake 420W psus in 3 different computers without even so much as a hiccup.
  • Lt_PatchLt_Patch Join Date: 2005-02-07 Member: 40286Members
Something <i>like</i>, not "these are the only PSUs you should ever buy". Thermaltake do actually make some good PSUs, you just need to read more than the wattage outputs on some of them...
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
my last computer was a POS mostly because of a crappy PSU I think.

I just got this thing, based largely on advice from you guys and my WoW guild:

    <a href="http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newpctd6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2192/newpctd6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" /></a>
    <ul>Thermaltake case</li><li>Enermax 500W PSU</li><li>Core 2 Duo E6600</li><li>Asus P5B Deluxe mobo</li><li>Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1gb</li><li>Geforce 7900 GS</li><li>Western Digital Caviar 250gb hd</li><li>Memorex dvd drive</li></ul>
I went mostly for quality but went slightly under top-of-the-line because I'm poor.

I considered waiting for DX10 video cards before I bought, but then I heard they may not be out for a while, they'll probably be expensive for a while, and DX10 requires Windows Vista which still is buggy and contravercial... so I figured this mid-range video card would last me til these DX10 cards and Vista are stable and cheaper...

it just came in the mail and it's running like a dream so far. bf2142 on pretty much max settings without a hitch; I think that's the most graphically intensive game I have. oh, I should install Oblivion - that would be another good test for it.

Hmm, sorry to flog a dead horse, but wasn't XP considered buggy and contraversial at it's release?

Mmm, XFX, never had a single problem with ANY of their kit, and I use them in my system, 2 6600GT limited editions, in fact <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I don't really understand why people want to have window panels on their PC. Unless you're watercolling, or have some REALLY special gear that deserves showing off, then all you'll be looking at is how dusty it's getting...

    Other than that, all good, from what I can see <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
good to hear something good about XFX - tbh I had never heard of them, and the packaging for the video card was very minimalistic...

They may be pretty pointless but I like windowed cases. seeing the fancy masheenery p4rts inside is fun, like being at the zoo and looking at the aminals in their cages. besides, seeing the dust is a GOOD thing - then you know when to pop it open and blow it clean <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

that said, the case I ordered is pretty ugly now that I see it up close -_- runs ultra quiet though, I didn't realize PCs with fans could be so quiet.
