<div class="IPBDescription">Possible contender? (link provided)</div>I haven't been on these forums for ages. My nifty little forum name is a scary reminder of the time that has passed since ><

Oh well, to the point of this thread. I was surfing about when I stumbled upon a forum discussing ideas to implement Readyrooms in their maps. "Oh really?" I figured and hoped to brush up on my mapping knowledge for NS. However, what I found was something very, very different yet very, very familiar.
"Insects Infestation"
A mod for halflife 2. This has the ambition to pitch 3 factions against each other, yet at the moment there are only 2 factions implemented. Ants and Termites. Now, I figured that the readyroom was merely a coincidence and kept reading.

The more I read, the more similarities I find with NS.
<b>NOTE:</b> I am not saying this is a rip off or in any way a bad modification. Nor am I claiming that NS has the patent for any style of gameplay.
I am merely <b>surprised</b> over the similarities between this and Natural Selection, whoms "career" I've followed since I saw the first concept art of the Lerk and that odd worm-thing together with some other nifty things.
In essence, it feels like someone watched NS, got inspired and decided to take it outside - only with insects.
Because, that is what I can understand from the game after having seen videos and read through their site.
* You can fight, much like in NS. Alot of the abilities are near identical with those in NS.
* You build buildings, offensive and defensive. Much like in NS.
* You gather resources from certain nodes. This also, much like in NS.
* There seem to be readyrooms and.. well.. yeah :S
A few questions of mine that instantly follows is:
* Do the NS team know about this?
* If so, do they recognize it as a threat?
* Are they maybe working closely together to help eachother out?
* Is that a possibility?
* Are there enough cookies to make kungfu, merkaba and all the other superb mappers stay with NS or is there an urge to make a "cow carcass"-level for II?
* Would it be my fault if they left, seeing as how I just, in some weird way, just made a little commercial for II, albeit unwillingly?
On a more serious note:
* II - a possible contender for the source-based fangroup?
<i>I apologize for any flaws in my english. It is not my native tounge. In addition, I do not want to offend or in any way alienate myself with any user on this or the linked forums. I will ofcourse remove the thread should it cause problems.</i>

aliens versus marines. aliens start small, can upgrade. you build structures etc.
The feel, pace, and goal of it is very different - I doubt it would have a large cross-section of appeal.
I’ll just say that the people who have actually gotten into the mod and learned its gameplay mechanics have realised just how different it is from NS, rather than just claiming “ns rip off” because it’s in the same genre.
II's gameplay - while similiar in writing about - is still a very different type of game. It's more of a game of capture the flag or rather the linked capturing you find in UnrealTournament 2004. You get to build structures, but upgrade and resource are restricted to linked capture points.

You only played one of the gameplay modes, try the other <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I think people take such 'competetiveness' too seriously. Personally I'm just interested in making great games, no matter what the competition is; besides, having other games in the same genre means that game aspects can be tested and judged to be good or bad without any productive effort on the developers side. Like, playing II it might be decided that one aspect could be much better, another aspect is very good, another aspect planned for the in-development game isn't even -in- II....
Just...just chill! Everything is dandy and will continue to be.
Oh, and there is definately one thing that NS will beat II on hands down every time: NS is meant to be a sci-fi experience simulator, as well as an RTS/FPS action game. II will never, ever be a sci-fi experience simulator. And NS will never be a bug-experience simulaton.
Since from what I keep reading, apparently they are going to be very different from each other.
So...just to put things in a kind of perspective....when Unreal Tournament came out, was that the end of Quake3?

UT > Q3.
So for this kitty, yes.

Quake is actually far more fun to play though, and UT is incredibly flawed as a DM/TDM game in so many respects its actually comical that it became as popular as it did (explaining which, this thread is not the place for, so I will explain over PM's if anyone's interested in learning a little)
Sure they may have taken one or two ideas from NS, but thats how the gaming industry has worked from the beginning of time. PLEASE don't discourage creative people from putting in the effort to bring us new types of games/mods.
Good luck to them.
I don't see how anyone can not read the full post before responding.
The reason that this game shows similarities to NS is that several NS fans had a hand within it's development.
In all seriousness, the game have its similarities to NS but comparing two games with equal objectives is like comparing Counter-Strike to any team based game there is. Personally, I do not see the game getting much of a fan base due to its complexity and that fact that ... its freakin ants dude. Who wants to play as an ant for hours at a time?
Actually, I will be trying the game out when it is released. Some of the videos made me laugh kind of hard.
btw II is really nice if u like the old <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" /> style <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
