<div class="IPBDescription">what do you think?</div>I've just been reading <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/middleearthonline/news.html?sid=6164769" target="_blank">this interview</a> with one of the big buys behind Lord of the Rings online (or whatever it's real name is) and they have some very, very interesting ideas for PvP :o
The general jist seems to be that in addition to your main 'hero' character you can also play a PvP monster through the use of scrying pools. Unlike the heroes which go about messing with their inventory these monsters upgrade themselves with 'destiny points' which are gained by slaying players, capturing towers and razing villages. In many ways comparable to upgrading your aliens in NS with resource points but more detailed :3
Luckily (or unluckily) they're keeping this 'monster mayhem' mainly to a large high-level area. The beauty of this is that while the players need high level heroes to go in and fight against the monster scourge, anyone with a mere 10 levels or more can use a scrying pool... so you can blow off steam with a huge monster (they start at level 50 and you buy up new levels with destiny points I think :o ) pretty much as soon as you've learned the basics of the game ^^
The monster you create is also 'saved' so every time you scrye you come back to your monster in the making.
What do you guys think? Don't know about you but I think it could be raaaather interesting and a pleasant change from the usual at least :3

Really I can't do much but hope that it turns out to be the greatest, most open-ended and immersive game I've ever seen.
I suspect the way you could see it is that the hero in the game is just using one of these pools and somehow seeing the adventures of your chosen monster through it. Kinda like how we look through the PC to see their adventures ^~
I must admit, I was wondering something similar to what emp said; the idea that lots of people play monsters with less players taking their heroes in there. But they do have some PvE stuff for both sides to occupy themselves with it seems. I've not tried LotR in beta or any other form so I'm still rather curious how the whole thing works really :3
The only other MMOs I'm watching with a mind to PvP so far are Conan and Warhammer... oh and Huxley of course :p
So this is new because it lets us play as monsters?

This is new because it lets you get into epic world-shaking battles without killing 10 Green Uruk-Hai Grunts and collecting their pouches and turning them into level up, over and over and over.
In addition you should've noticed what I said about monster evolution; it's based off destiny points. This means to advance in PvP you don't need to worry about hunting 'phat lewt' to stand a chance; just engage in PvP and it rewards you! Unlike WoW's PvP for example it appears you can level up your monster purely through PvP and customise it too if you so wanted.
It also means that when you feel sociable you still have your pretty hero character as your main to chat to everyone as... infact it kinda solves the horrible problem wow has where your friends might make a horde or alliance char when you want to play as the other side because you essentially have both on one character :p
...still 2 levels to 70 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> my guild did karazan yesterday... I'm jealous. </derail>
Also, check <a href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/22/1645252" target="_blank">this</a> out FPS-style. Sorta.
Anyway, what's the max level? S'no good if you get even a level 50 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skulk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::skulk::" border="0" alt="skulk.gif" /> while level 200's roam around killing your dudes.
Guild Wars

lalala... not listening. Can't hear you. lalala...
:p
As for max level in LotR I'm not really sure; I'll go have a looksee in the near future no doubt or maybe a beta tester could tell us?

The act of scrying usually means using mystical resources to see things afar; sometimes even across time.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
"Controlling monsters" will do.
So... couldn't people control level 50 monsters, have it sit there and have a friend hack-away at it and get a grip of EXP?

Oh come on, I can understand not liking the gameplay, but completely ignoring any good aspects of the rest of the game? Shame on you.

You can make alts in World of Warcraft, bring them to battlegrounds, and let your friends wail on them. It's boring and stupid, though. Besides, you'll be controlling monsters fighting monsters in giant battles, not the things people quest against.
So? Control something strong, tell your friends, get the monster ripped apart while you go do something else.

It dies <i>once</i>, then respawns deep behind enemy lines. Woo, you really broke the game there, mister.

Er, it sounds like this will be a high level PvP-enabled zone anyway.
Have fun getting ganked by everyone else who isn't trying to exploit the system.
