I want to go linux but...

...AOL + limitidness stopping me
Okay so with the warning that Vista won't support OpenGL I'm seriously looking in to Linux as a way forward.

I know a bit about Distro's and had a few recommendations. Predominately I would like a similar to windows interface with as little command line as possible and with little driver setup.

I also have some problems including the fact I am an AOL user, setting up my USB modem and getting a connection to run through it can be a bit of a problem. Another problem I have is a lot of programs tend to run under windows and not linux, including most my games although I know there is a progam (WINE?) which emulates them just as well if not better. I don't game much anymore but hey. I can use trillian instead of AIM and AOL and there are linux IRC versions so I'm not too bothered, I also use Winamp for music so no need for WMP. Virii programs for linux? I know of none. The file extensions also blow my mind.

So basically if anyone knows a simple way of getting an AOL connection + USB Modem working with a simple linux distro and give me some distro recommendations it would be appreciated!

Vista might not support opengl, but it supports somthing much more important: dx10. If you go to linux, you will have to wait for dx10 support to be implemented (and heavens knows microsoft won't make it easy). In addition, since vista suppoedly won't support opengl, then there is no reason for game developers to create games with opengl support if they are going to have their applications use DX10 anyway, so this would only work if you have a hardcore opengl card and need to force that compadability for older games. I assure you that new games developed will depend on d3d or somthing even newer if ogl is not supported. In addition, lunix, though independent, is nonstandard and does not assure program compadability with all software.

I suggest you think this through again.

I won't be playing newer games so the DX10 support I don't really care about. When college finishes in the summer I'm giving up more hardcore gaming and will probably revert to a console and my older games which for example, NS requires OGL and Half-Life also runs a lot better in OGL. I also hate Microsoft Office and I have read a few OpenSource articles lately, Linux is getting better and better. For freeware it has come along a lot faster than Microsoft has developed Windows with an extraordinary budget.

You're really looking at this the wrong way. Switching to linux because vista is dropping openGL support is not good logic. You're better off just sticking with WinXP until someone comes up with a patch for vista that introduces openGL.

I run linux on two servers here that have no interface with the outside world other than an SSH terminal. This is the way linux was meant to be. Running desktop apps are always secondary.

Oh, and if you ask for help in getting AOL working under linux on any penguin newsgroup, prepare for flameage.

What Scythe said, switching to vista is not at all needed. XP (pro) does everything just fine, its not like once vista is released everything else is obsolete. In fact Vista is the one which is useless at the moment...

As long as XP can do its job with the programs I currently use and games I play, Vista does not exist for me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

btw http://www.miranda-im.org/ also a nice alternative for the other known messengers...

I don't know where any of you guys are getting this. OpenGL is fine on Vista.

Still doesnt make up for the fact that XP is still kicking @$$ and Vista, in my eyes, is nothing more then fancy graphics at the moment. It just doesnt pay to switch currently...

OpenGL is a dying standard anyway. Much to my regret, I hasten to add. I don't want Microsoft sitting on yet another de-facto monopoly.
