To roughly quote BathroomMonkey, the modeler of most of NS's weapons:
"The LMG has a scope because its looked stupid without one. Its only for looks, and I had the extra polys to spare on it. If you feel the need for an explaination, think of the LMG as a multipurpose light assault weapon. Therefore it was designed to work in many different situations. If the marines were fighting in large open areas, the scope would be an advantage, and used. However, all of NS's maps take place in tight, close areas, whice renders a scope useless.
