<div class="IPBDescription">Figured we might as well break out 'the anime thread'</div>My inrerest as of late has been piqued (or re-piqued) by anime and crazy Japanese culture once again. So I get to turn to the NS-forums (or the substantial, yet incomplete, remainder of it), to ask...what good stuff is floating around?
Recently I've gained some strange interest in anime for some unknown reason (...not being able to be properly employed is probably one aspect of it...). So, I'm going to go ahead and list off my opinions of some animes, and hopefully other people will be able to recommend similar things (or possibly dissimilar things which could also be of interest). Perhaps some useful collective of knowledge and suggestions can be formed, despie the apparent lack of Infinitum. Be prepared for long-windedness, heh; also note that none of my animes appear to be from later than 2002, so feel free to remedy that as well (I know I've seen something more recent one at least one occasion, but the name eludes me).

I suppose I'll start off with the genesis of my new anime interest, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranma_%C2%BD" target="_blank">Ranma ½</a>. I heard some stuff about it in my dorm a couple years ago, and it didn't sound all that interesting, but upon dragging myself to watch some of it, it's a fairly interesting story. The late 80's quality animation in the first few episodes is a bit of a put-off, but it does manage to get better as you continue. Unfortunately it lacks substantial development, but there's occasionally good comedy in there (Happosai is awesome). Although the animation is fairly similar to Dragonball or DBZ the storyline is much cooler - plus it doesn't take 20 episodes to finish one fight scene. Despite the subpar animation in the first season's episodes (before it became <a href="http://www.furinkan.com/ranma/anime/tv.html" target="_blank">Ranma ½ Nettohen</a>) I do like the crazy 'super-happy-fun' intro song...because I'm crazy.
I did try to get a hold of some <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urusei_Yatsura" target="_blank">Urusei Yatsura</a> but can't seem to find it anywhere (created by Ranma's creator, apparently).
Next, I finished watching the basic episodes of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_hina" target="_blank">Love Hina</a> (no access to any of these 'specials' I've heard about, however). Pretty interesting story...the short series tend to have better character development. This one's kind of predictable in the 'loser guy gets woman' area, but the 23rd and 24th episodes have some of those good ol' heart-wrenching scenes. I suppose a decent segway can be made with Ranma, in that Akane and Naru are both violent, and Ranma and Keitaro get blamed of inadvertent perversion...Far quicker watching that Ranma, since there's far, far, far fewer episodes (plus the music is pretty good).
I suppose it's always fun to head over to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion" target="_blank">Neon Genesis Evangelion</a>, which has really nice art, and occasional (but also often superfluous, redundant or nonsensical) symbolism. Shinji is probably one of the most annoying anime characters you'll ever meet, though. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_Of_Evangelion" target="_blank">End of Evangelion</a> was the first anime DVD that I purchased, and apparently was created due to people's discontent with the final two episodes of the series (I'm not sure how it placated them, but it does have good art). Apparently it was too violent for Japanese TV at some point, and had its budget cut, so that the episodes after 16 or 18 or something look crappier.
There's always <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chobits" target="_blank">Chobits</a>, of which I haven't seen the entirety, but it's got some decent humor, art and 'Chii'. I've never actually gotten around to seeing the whole set, but "Chii gets a job" seems to be a fairly popular episode, as I've probably seen it 4 times...
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonball_z" target="_blank">Dragonball Z</a> somehow manages to maintain its popularity, but I have no idea how. It takes character's about 2 episodes to finish a sentence, and the series is a prime example of inconsistency, but it's still around somehow. Note that the Japanese version is far more violent and 'evil' than anything you might have seen on Cartoon Network. Personally I don't think it helps it any, but whatever.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_bebop" target="_blank">Cowboy Bebop</a> is probably a staple of anyone that's seen Adult Swim from 2-5 years ago, when it was on regularily. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Bebop:_The_Movie" target="_blank">Movie</a> isn't too bad either. Generally good music all around. It's also one of the few animes where I feel the English voice acting isn't too bad. Really good art in there, along with music (that's probably to be expected with 'bebop' in the name).
Another staple of Adult Swim was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigun" target="_blank">Trigun</a> (coincidently, I like the English voice acting in that one as well, which sound fairly similar to their Japanese counterparts - to me, anyway). It does occasionally have the DBZ-syndrome, where people stand around and stare at eachother for long periods, but not too often, since it's only 26 episodes. Tends to not be enough background information about why the planet and people are the way they are, but it is sortof a miniseries, so character development takes a bit more precedence. The episodes turn darker after a certain point, which is cool as well.
Also on Adult Swim was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin_the_third" target="_blank">Lupin the Third</a>, which I hate and can't stand to watch, so don't ask me about it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .
No other series come to mind off hand (I recall an episode or two pokemon being watched at some point, but that's not really worth noting). <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_mononoke" target="_blank">Princess Mononoke</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away" target="_blank">Spirited Away</a> are both pretty good (not a fan of the face drawing style employed by Miyazaki, but stories and characters are cool. I've only seen them dubbed, so I can't really comment on any sort of voice acting difference (aside from the fact that they use pretty high-budge American voice actors, so they're not bad). I'm hoping to see <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jin_Roh" target="_blank">Jin Roh</a> or Cerberus or whatever you want to call it at some point, but no where in this city seems to carry it.

I suppose, if we're looking for crazy sci-fi stuff I should also mention the first anime I ever watched, which was on the Sci-Fi channel at like 2am in 1996 or something (back when they had cool programming besides Stargate, like MST3k), <a href="http://www.absoluteanime.com/eyes_of_mars/index.htm" target="_blank">E.Y.E.S. of Mars</a> (which is apparently so obscure that wikipedia doesn't have a page for it). I thought the idea of the asteroid belt being a destroyed planet and humans coming to Mars intriguing, but crazy as well).
While Ranma 1/2 is pretty interesting I slowly became disappointed at the lack of character development, so if someone could recommend something Ranma-esque without the monotonous lack of development, that could be good. Something like Love Hina without the unnecessary Keitaro beatings could also be good (pardon the paradoxical/blasphemous wording, but something like Love Hina, but more realistic?). Good sci-fi anime could be good too. I'm not sure what was so disappointing about Outlaw Star to me, though.
Artistically Love Hina and NGE are probably the two best looking ones I've seen. Trigun might not be too far behind (but there's some sitting around/staring at eachother in Trigun and NGE, while LH seems to keep moving usually). Apparently Love Hina is also based off of some real place, and there may be a Hinata Inn somewhere...which is also intriguing. I was also interested to find out that Megumi Hayashibara does the voices for a lot of people in my favorite animes, including female Ranma, Faye in Cowboy Bebop, Rei in NGE and Hakura in Love Hina...along with singing a bunch of intro/outro and mid-episode songs).
Feel free to describe your favorite anime/recommend things/correct stuff/etc.
Now if only I had time to memorize 1800 kanji characters...

It started with a friend recommending <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokimeki_Memorial_Only_Love" target="_blank">Tokimeki Memorial</a> to me about 2 weeks ago. I watched the 12 episodes of that in about two days. The first episode had me laughing at the silliness of some of it. It's a comedy/romance but the main character keeps being the target of pranks by the Student Council which turn out rather amusing.
After that I made the mistake of checking out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion" target="_blank">Neon Genesis Evangelion</a>. One of the strangest shows I've ever watched, especially towards the end, but it has become one of my all time favorite. I'm currently watching through it again to see if I pick up on anything new.
Due to hearing about it in #ns, I'm also currently watching <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azumanga" target="_blank">Azumanga Daioh</a>. It's a fun, silly, and random anime about school life.
I have watched <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_hina" target="_blank">Love Hina</a> in the past and also enjoyed it quite a bit.
I have not watched this one yet, but a friend recommended <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya" target="_blank">The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya</a> to me. I may check that out when I'm done with Evangelion again and Azumanga.
People in #ns have recommended a few more to me to watch but I've forgotten what they were <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />.
Love hina is basically a Anime for girls. However it was the first anime i ever watched (Besides Pokèmon -.-)
Besides its a really cute anime... Nothing bad to say about it-
I haven't really seen the Ranma 1/2 Series, however i have read all the mangas. it's a great show.
You should also check out Elfen Lied. It has a beautiful story and characters. The last episode almost brought me to tears...However it's really Violent. Not that that is a minus.

Whatever came first is usually best: Book before movie? Book is better. Movie before book? Watch the movie, forget the book.
A lot of anime is based off manga (since it takes significantly less funding to get a manga published, the anime usually gets made once the manga has established and proven itself), and usually the manga is better. Ranma ½ is a good example of this. Dragon Ball in its various incarnations too (manga sucks hard, anime sucks harder).
So you'll want to read <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden:_It%27s_an_Endless_World" target="_blank">Eden.</a> It's probably very difficult to get outside Japan and Germany. I've never seen any anime except Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and some movie called Steamboy. I read a little about Ghost in the Shell the other day when I was Wikipedia-ing and it seemed sort of interesting. Is that a good starting point?

Anime comes in many different genres just like any other kind of media so perhaps you're confusing a specific genre with anime in general.

Well, it's sort of like the Lord of the Rings in a way. They both start off with an innocent guy who, just by chance, happens to get caught up in some sort of sticky situation. He leaves his home to fix it. He meets a bunch of different characters, they all interact and do a lot of really awesome stuff, and eventually it gets worked out.
Unlike the LOTR, Monster continues to get deeper, and deeper, and more complex, then deeper some more before the end. There is a lot of stuff going on, but it's easier to follow than the review makes it out to be.
I just saw The Omen last night (the new one), and the overall progression seems similar. In the Omen, two of the characters end up travelling to different places around the world to discover the past of the boy and what to do about him, which is pretty much EXACTLY what happens in Monster.
Seriously... watch it. It will make you a better person.

Full Metal Alchemist is really the best Anime I've ever watched.

Full Metal Alchemist is really the best Anime I've ever watched.

I have not watched this one yet, but a friend recommended <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya" target="_blank">The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya</a> to me. I may check that out when I'm done with Evangelion again and Azumanga.

Other then that Naruto is craptastic
I tried to watch some more but the storyline still just keeps on going like this:
Example:
OMG Akamaru is infected with venom. if he isn't treated he dies.
At the end of the episode: Akamaru is severely wounded but for some reason not dead.
And the 99 other fillers
I am Naruto. Hello not familiar strange villain who is threatening the hidden leaf city.
Villain who is threatening the hidden leaf city: GHAAR! I am the new evil genius who is supposed to defeat the "Hidden" Leaf village. And then comes some background story of the villan. then comes a big poorly animated battle.
Naruto: I am stronger that you think
villain: I am even stronger.
Naruto: That wasn't my real power.
Villain: This isn't my real power either
Naruto: Gahrg! you really are strong. I am about to get defeated!
Villain: HAHA i clearly am the strongest
Naruto: Demon Fox or Friends coming to turn the battle
Naruto is severely wounded but not dead.

the series is a breakthrough when it is the first time in anime history when they use <i>that strange</i> method to present a story, filled up with trivia for u to discover. if u have come across the term <i>broadcast</i> and <i>chronological</i> u may have an idea on what i am talking about. anyway its better for u to discover it yourself.
most important thing is, if u start this series in the <i>broadcast</i> way which i suggest, dun skip episode 1. dun give up when u have no idea what its talking about. u will understand the episode when u finish it. and dun bother about how messy the story it, by episode 14, u will know what they would like to have it <i>that that strange</i> way. by watching in the <i>broadcast</i> way u will understand why it is so popular last year when it is released. u will gain a lot and be interested to go over the whole story again
however, if u have doubt with your understanding ability, just watch that in the chronological order. but thats definitely less interesting
due to its popularity, rumor has it that the second season will be coming on Fall 2007 and i am looking forward to it. now i gonna complete the novel version #8 tonight.

the premise for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunslinger_girl" target="_blank">Gunslinger Girl</a> is oddly similar to Noir. (Girls+Guns+Flashbacks=?)

Good plot. There is a character development kind-of, but if you love girls, explosions and guns-in-detail, there ya go. ^_^

I wouldn't recommend watching it this way at all. Definitely stick to the broadcast order. Watching it in chronological order breaks everything that makes it enjoyable.
Also might I recommend <a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/947.html" target="_blank">Nodame Cantabile</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nodame_Cantabile" target="_blank">Wiki</a>
The music is wonderful.
I'm also watching and enjoying
Death Note, <a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/904.html" target="_blank">Code Geass</a>, <a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/917.html" target="_blank">Soukou no Strain</a>
and just finished up Black Lagoon <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Lagoon" target="_blank">Wiki</a>.
Also if you want an interesting time watch <a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/906.html" target="_blank">Bartender</a>. It's a drama/slice of life but I watch it mainly for the alcohol history and info. They even tell you the ingredients for each glass at the end of the episode.
