Interactivity

Hey there, im new to the forums but I have been a fan of the game since its release and enjoy playing it all the time. I have quite a bit on these forums about what should be implemented into NS2 and there is a huge chunk i agree with. But there is something that i haven't seen (or could have missed it), that being Interactivity...

By this i mean that players should be able to interact with most things in natural selection 2, for example some ideas from the top of my head...

Computers - (has been mentioned) Marines Should be able to interact with computers to lock doors or like the commander keep an eye on their comrades (like in Aliens, where they are looking for the colonists).

Barricades - Marines have welders and also like in aliens (the movie) they should be able to create barricades using various objects, such as wall panels, desks, computers and general garbage.

Doors - I think a neat idea would be that marines should be able weld up doors or lock them, of course this would be unbalanced and would have to only be temporory, but to counter this Aliens would also be able to infest their side of the door stopping it from opening due to the strength of the infestation, again this would eventually corrode.

Walls - Some walls in the game should be destructable, this doesnt mean that an alien can just move close and chomp at it or a marine can shoot his pistol at it. Instead there would have to be a very strong impact against it, like an explosion... Again not all walls can be destroyed otherwise people would be falling off the map.

Data Files - Maybe this wont work but it would be quite a nice idea to elabborate the story a tad. There should be data files, like you find in Doom 3. These would give the players a bit of a plot as to what happened here when the aliens came, or clues to secret passages or items that could be locked away.

Corpses - Rather than them just dissapearing, the aliens should be able to eat them giving more HP...

I have more to add but right now i just want to start playing hehe <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Let me go down the list....

    I'm for the computer idea...

Barricades seem like it could be cool, but they would need to be fairly easy to destroy.

Not a fan of the door idea. Barricades would be better.

Wall idea isn't all that great, already has been mentioned, I believe.

Data files would be better if they weren't going to turn into a mad dash once the first person know how to use it.

I dunno about the corpse-eating idea. They had something like that in the mod Hidden for HL2, and frankly, that's one of the reasons the game got bumped to a Mature rating. This also means bye-bye to your younger customers. Hive / gorge / normal healing is OK as is.

ok, as for the list, here's my thoughts, and the topics that you really should have posted in.... not trying to be mean, just use search in the future, and put each idea in its own special thread.... if there is no thread, create a new one for that particular idea.

    computers would be awesome

data files are also mentioned there, i wouldnt like it, as nubs would read that stuff instead of fighting.

barricades made from random items lying around the map would be great
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=8263461310754641920&showforum=84" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....mp;showforum=84</a>
doors could also be welded shut in the same fashion, but should be pretty weak and easy to open again.

i like the idea of using corpes to your advantage
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=8263461310754641920&showtopic=100667" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....howtopic=100667</a>

i cant recall any topics on destructable walls, and i couldnt find any with the search... but it sounds a lot like red faction. while that was a good game, it did get a bit rediculous when half the map got blown away.

it could be used in NS to a limited extent, but only in areas where there is rock textures in the map, laser drilling for example. maybe the concrete walls get repaired by nanites and cant be dammaged? and yeah, only grenade launcher/bile can destroy the rock. it could be a good tactic for aliens to use acid to cut a tunnel from 1 hive to another?

the dev's will be putting in a lot of effort making the maps pretty, i'm sure they dont want it all blown up!

i think the best way to implement "interactivity" apart from the ideas mentioned in the threads above, is to make almost every object in the map usable, and with its own physics/properties. by this i'm referring to this game my brother loves (sorry i havent played it and dont know the name, someone help me out!), in which the whole game is set in 1 shopping mall, and is full of zombies. basicially ANYTHING can be picked up and used as a weapon (chairs, potplants, bottles, rocks, and i think even zombie limbs). it could be very time consuming to make a model for every little thing, and then make it be able to be thrown/used as a weapon, but it would be worth it.

imagine you run out of ammo, after using the buttstock of your LMG the skulk knocks the weapons out of your hands (including knife), and luckily you punch him in the nose with your fists and the low hp skulk finally dies. now you see a new full hp skulk running at you.... you rip a metal pipe of the wall beside you and run in swinging =) as you can see, i love marine melee fights, and only having the knife doesnt present many options... apart from welding a skulk to death

Even with a knife know your stuffed agaist a skulk. I don't think that its worth the developers time to code so you can smash a pot plant over a aliens head, at least not in the beta of NS2.

    The rest seem pretty cool.

I like the idea of being able to pick up random stuff and use it as a weapon, mainly because it might have longer range than the knife.
