Ping Problems

Hello, I'm new to NS. I have DSL and never had any lag problems with other games such as counterstrike, natural selection etc. It averages around a 100
With NS though it likes to get choppy. I can hardly play an NS map smoothly, I imagine that is because of all the data of structures and such. But it also chops up when the action gets a little frantic
I am wondering if there is anything I can do to lower my ping whether it be something I type in the console or simple software modifications. I probably need a better computer. Any help is much apreciated

If you also have the problem with other games, try to reinstall Steam.
But if it's only on NS, I don't know what it could be, sorry... Just try to reinstall the game...
Ok, if this happens, play around with the options and turn off the unnecessary junk like gamma ramp or dynamic lights, and type cl_himodels_0
this should help a little.
This will show you you ping/loss/choke (and I think FPS, don't remember)
Ping/Loss/Choke are all about your network/the server.
Ping: Time it takes (in milliseconds) to send a piece of data to the server (low is good, sub 200 should be playable I think)
Loss: a rating of how much data is being dropped between you and the server (low is VERY good, this can cause the game to get choppy, with people jumping around)
Choke: a rating of how smooth your network traffic is.
FPS: Frames Per Second. If this is dropping then your computer is at fault.
So, check that data, let us know what you are averaging (or if you see spikes any where).
IF you FPS is fluctuating, then post your system specs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
