The Golden Compass

Im not one for posting threads based around a youtube video, but ish man!
These are probably some of my favorite books of all time, I had no idea they were making them into movies though!
Cast looks pretty good to me, Im excited. What I wonder though, will they leave <i>everything</i> in, if you've read all the books you know what I mean. There's alot (ALOT) of content that I don't think "Christian" America would approve of.

Meh, the books were a <b>little sappy</b> for me. I'm looking forward to some neat special effects in the movies though. A lot of times in the book I was reading it and wondering how I'd do it in a movie.

Pretty good. It's tough to hurt my feelings and genocide doesn't bother me as much as it should. Other than that, I'm just like any other Vulcan or positronic android who cannot experience emotions.
I mean humans. I'm just like other humans.
So I found out that is, what I assume to be, the American name of the book.
In conclusion:
I can't wait.
My first thought was "WTH is "The Golden Compass"?"

Yea - It's NORTHERN LIGHTS people! I've only read the first one, and I didn't know that it was a trilogy so I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. Now I know why - and I have to read the others since I recall enjoying the first. I did a bunch of sketches of the armoured bears.
Is this movie about ALL 3 books or just the first? It'd be pretty condensed if it was all 3 - (aka it would suck)

Oh come on, "The Golden Compass" is a more descriptive name.
Anyway, It's only the first one in this film. And yes, you should definetly read the other 2, they are damned good.
First one, according to IMDB, "The Subtle Knife" is due out 2009.

Exactly? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
Maybe my original post wasn't clear enough:
This movie is based upon the first book, "The Northern Lights". I gathered this information through IMDB, as apparently, there is a movie based on the second book, "The Subtle Knife", coming out in 2009.

I has good reading comprehensions.
Anyway, it's a fantastic series and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen; I hope it's done justice, but I am not reserving high hopes.
What I love about the books is that it starts off fairly small, with a some conspiracy of kidnapped children, and then gets bigger delving into scientific theory, and finally in the third book gets even huger delving into religeous theory. It'll be interesting to find out what happens in the third movie (I assume this is a trilogy as the footage shown looked like it was entirely from the 1st book), as there is content in the third book that has potential to make Christian communities somewhat antsy.

Sounds like you seem to be describing 99% of popular culture. Yeah we'll have to see how that works out.
In my op, 'Northern Lights' is a much better title for a book than 'The Golden Compass' - I mean, the althiometer isn't even a compass, its an althiometer! It is perhaps described a handful of the times in the book as 'resembling a golden compass' but....gah. Why do American releases so often have name changes; its like the publishers don't think the public will 'get' it if they don't change the name of something vaguely abstract to something simple and digestable. EG Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone -> Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

But by naming it "The Golden Compass" then you can use the same naming pattern and theme for the others. "Subtle knife" "Amber Spyglass" etc. Besides, it's more descriptive of what the books about and is more... interesting I guess.
The Harry Potter thing just had to do with that fact that most people here wouldn't understand the "Philosophers Stone" reference. And damn, if a simple name change can make more people read the book, then why the hell not change it?

I am in complete opposition to this opinion! Have at ye!
and for the record, I didn't know what the philosopher's stone was when I first bought the book (except in the psychedelic mushroom meaning of the word). Why would I? I was expecting the book to <i>explain</i> what it is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> And 'Northern Lights' is more interesting than 'The Golden Compass'!
ah well, I kinda expected this.
I will probably end up seeing it any way
Best example is the Witches <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>quick visit to Lara, then a quick view of them going to war, then they are fighting for the good guys, all without any real explination....</span>
P.S. You don't need to scold me, some of my friends already put me in place when I told them that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I found the book in the 'young adults' section of barnes and noble, targeted at 7 year olds. little did I know there were decapitations and gore and manipulation and loss and very big words every which way.
I cant keep wondering how they will make the second and third movie working as the first already misses the main idea and the spirit the book with-held.
Also how the hell they are going to make the scene in botanica has such seismic impact as it does in the last book.
Im still happy the movies are made. Some1 might actually read the books and find the multi-layered trilogy that is so brilliant in all ways.
Flying witches (with BOW AND ARROW) and talking bears in armor aren't my thing.
