Alright, I'm going to try and state this as clearly as possible despite the fact that I want to walk outside, get in my car, and crash into a tree at 150mph.
Until recently I've been putting up with Firefox 2.0 displaying characters in other languages as ?? but was finally fed up with it. Someone mentioned that I should change my character encoding settings to Unicode. I tried every flavor of Unicode available but still saw the text (for instance, Japanese) as ??.
But now there's a new problem. When I view certain pages (like my bank account balance) the entire page is filled with unviewable crap, and I have no idea what to change the character encoding back to in order to fix it. Nothing works. It always comes out looking like this:
<img src="http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/3439/aaaarghml8.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
What the hell do I do? Someone please tell me before I kill myself and those around me.

(You do have the correct language packs installed, right? Without them, you'll get question marks and garbled text when looking at Japanese no matter what encoding you use.)
Edit: The default character set is ISO-8859-1
In before Tychocelchuuu gives you bad advice.

blah blah Opera blah blah faster more customizable easier blah blah kiss me you fool blah blah follows W3C standards better blah blah Firefox needs an extension to tie its own shoes blah blah in conclusion Opera.
You could also reinstall Firefox, use IE, or install an extension like IEtab that forces FF to do something weird to the site.
Still can't find much reason to switch away from Avant Browser though.
<a href="http://www.avantbrowser.com/" target="_blank">http://www.avantbrowser.com/</a>
It's based off of IE, but I've had less crashes on it than Firefox.
(And I don't even use Firefox much)
Firefox never crashes for me, you newbs must be doing something wrong blah blah or running windows 95 or something blah blah

Or using one of the approximately 1 million add-ons it takes for each person to configure Firefox to their liking. Seriously.
And, I use three plug ins for firefox. Adblock, Scriptblock and that's it.
I say go with Tycho's advice and reinstall, then report back to us.
We could try <b>actually helping</b> instead of proceeding with this Opera vs. Firefox war.

I only derail every "please help me, Firefox isn't working" thread. And it's not derailing, because the fastest way to fix something that is broken right now and may break in the future is just to switch to something that won't break at all.

That's a copout, and a sorry lazy approach to life, as you'll find out as you travel through it.
Sorry I can't offer you any help Zig, this one baffles me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Opera is highly customizable out of the box, meaning you can do most of the things you want <i>without</i> an addon (which reduces the likelihood of conflicts and reduces memory usage). And if you really want, there are plugins for Opera too. It's just that you don't need them to do every little thing.
I switched back to this and it only corrected itself after I restarted my computer. Odd.. but it's fixed. Thanks!
