I've been a little ###### at Metallica since some years ago (and definitely after St. Anger) but this makes it all better. I'm still amazed that I hadn't heard this cover until like two weeks ago. This is bringin it back to the days of Call of Ktulu. If you haven't heard this yet, enjoy.

I'm not sure if its still true, but they used to play "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" version of this song before every concert. It does sound pretty cool, I just hope it isn't simply them trying to lure back old fans so they can sell us a CD with "Unforgiven 4" as the title track.

I guess they did, I was just too obsessed with all the other tracks to get a grip on this one. They recently redid it (this version, I believe) for an album that came out in February.

knowledge edit: They've opened concerts with it but that was simply a recording.

QUOTE(Wiki)

Metallica also released a cover of "The Ecstasy of Gold", a song by Ennio Morricone in an album entitled We All Love Ennio Morricone released on February 20, 2007, in which other artists honor the composer. The Ecstasy of Gold has been the opener of Metallica live shows for over 20 years - but it has always been the original instrumentation and arrangement, played from a recording. This new version features the band itself performing it, giving a new guitar-based interpretation to the song.[19]

Yeah, the "Ecstacy of Gold" is originally from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It's pretty famous, and it's been done by a few other bands. Jay-Z also uses it as the background to "Blueprint 2".

Here's a live concert version of the original, it's pretty incredible:

Also, a shamless plug to my YTMND that uses this song: lol gold

Pretty cool, doesn't sound like the true Metallica that much.

They're getting even sloppier, but at least it's a step above that atrocity called St. Anger.
