i dont see how the gameplay is that similar to sc. just because it has a lot of the same units, which is a given because its a sequel, doesnt mean it plays exactly the same. it looks like hey took a lot of the good things from sc, like strategy and original units combined with large scale battles, and improved them.
to all you people who see all RTS games are the same, they share much more differences than FPS games, which usually only differ with weapons (sometimes) and levels, if you want to dumb things down as much as possible, which anti RTS people seem to do.

That is a major gameplay change in itself and its probably safe to assume all 3 races have access to a "superweapon". Of course, defining what constitutes a "significant change" will depend on how deep you got into the game. If you're saying that "nothing" has changed since SC1 then you probably need to play SC1 again to refresh your memory.
From what I've seen so far, I'm incredibly happy. They've not deviated that far from the original Starcraft but they've given it a pleasing graphics upgrade and injected some new units into it. Actually, in the Q&A, only the protoss have a "superweapon". The others have ways to counter it, and multiple "Oh holy awesome" weapons, but they said they didn't have them.

i think some people are getting all bent up because they are seeing a lot of the same units, just prettier. but all those units you saw that you recognized, could you really have starcraft without them? itd be like having warcraft without peons.
it looks like they took the units that the game HAS to have, like zealots, marines, siege tanks, zerglings, i would imagine hydras and mutas, and some others, and expanded on what they can do and what else there is. perfect recipe for another starcraft.
and if you dont like starcraft, or RTSs in general, then you dont need to come around here griefing and claiming it sucks.

No innovation? What the #### are you expecting? Didn't you actually see the following differences?
They stated they're going for an even more differentiated gameplay between the three races. Already we can see that Protoss has a unique approach to unit deployment, meaning they can sneak up to a place and mass drop new units. Zerg looks more swarm/mass attack oriented. We don't know much about Terran yet, which is not making a case neither for innovation or lack of it until we know more.
What are people like you testament expecting? I could imagine worse from what I've seen.

TBH, coming from a NON RTS gamer, I think that SC2 looks really good so far.
Blizz did what they always do.
Take a previous game. Keep the fundamentals the same, but add in a lot of new features (not just bells and whistles, but honest to god features).
I mean, I don't really know what else people were expecting from SC2. Heroes ala WC3? General Powers ala C&C:Gs or Advance Wars?
Meh, I don't like the genre (I love watching people play, but I blow dead bears when it comes to micro management, the only "strategy" I can do is turtle and the base creep).
But what ever.
/me goes back to waiting for Lost Vikings 3
All you RTS fans that are disappointed that they haven't fundamentally rewritten the genre can cry me a river <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> What are people like you testament expecting? I could imagine worse from what I've seen. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Things you can utilize outside of your units. Something beyond "you're higher so you hit more" would be nice and add more battling for positioning and strong defensive positions. I want true strategy defensive reductions/offensive bonuses when you get/when you flank(ed), things like Morale for marines, and the equivalent/something interesting like that for zerg and protoss would be just dandy.
I'm generally not an RTS fan because RTS gameplay just doesn't entice me. Once you get into combat actual strategy isn't that important, and it ends up being a straight-up brawl, which gets old quickly.

No guts, No glory. Blizzard basically just cowarded up into their RTS safety-net on this one, trying to beat the dead or nearly-dying horse of their previous success in SC. Its nice they've improved on a near-perfect game, but come on, 9 years for improvement and all they produce is a handful of new units and some cheap eye-candy? Where's the innovation? Where's the balls to step out of their safe-haven RTS genre and do something thats actually "Next-Gen" (i.e. MMORTSFPS hybrid). Where would we be if every company took on Blizzard's lack of adventure? Ford would still be rolling out model T's (albeit uber advanced models), NASA would still be using Space Shuttles (oh wait they are...), humans would still rely on fossil fuels for energy (oh wait, we are) and Coca-Cola would never have been invented (hmm, maybe that's a good thing). Anyways my point is good (gaming) companies seperate themselves from the mediocre "factory-line" ones by their willingness to push the envelope risk a couple million dollars to develop something that could potentially revolutionize a new gaming genre. Obviously Blizzard is not such a company, choosing rather to just "factory-line" a product that is way past its prime. Maybe I'm just bitter because I wanted something more (but was expecting this nonetheless), but either way Blizzard has just sealed their fate of complete stagnancy for the next 4 years or so. Oh well, at least they've still got the Korean market...

When has Blizzard ever innovated anything? They don't innovate, they perfect. And to say they get no glory from it is ignorance. I've got a 7 million+ MMO here, 2 seperate RTSs that still have well over a million playing them...yep, sounds pretty glorious to me.

This is Starcraft 2, a sequel. Not a brand new game, not some weird attempt to change Starcraft style. Im sure in the future blizzard will make a new IP but right now they got a few sequels to produce.
There's nothing wrong with Starcraft 2, it appears to be as good as sequels go. There IS something wrong however on spending the last nine years and the next four to come on a sequel to an Ex-Gen game instead of contributing to the innovation of the Next-Gen genre. When battlefields become a global server of thousand-men teams of human-controlled players pitted against each other, then where will Blizzard? Still in development of Starcraft 3?

Indeed. Not to mention that nothing is final yet, they can make tons of changes before the final release came out. Also, remember that they've shown us only a small portion of the game.
What do you expect them to show the whole game one day after they announced SC2 was in development? No one ever shows the whole game or everything in that short period of time.
If you saw Warcraft 3 alpha, it was a different game. They had flying heroes and most of it looked like WC2 with just new units(graphics looked like WC2).
Warcraft 2 > Warcraft 3 made a huge improvement because Warcraft 2 had only one race. So they upped the one race into 4 races and added heroes, creeps, etc for WC3.
Warcraft 1 > 2 simply improve graphics, added more units, more storyline, and the most of all now had online play through battle.net
Starcraft 1 > 2 - We don't even though how much they're adding or anything. Again, we haven't seen everything yet. Starcraft 1 had 3 races which were all different and the game was fairly balanced.
Unlike Warcraft 2, Starcraft had 3 races instead of one and those 3 different races were already balanced.
Warcraft 2 was pretty simple to balance, since orcs and humans were almost identical.
Also, besides, blizzard RTSs(and games) have always been quality games which has a lot of replay value and a great single player with a great storyline.
The single player is usually 15 hours + gameplay with a great storyline. And of course multiplayer and everything else.
What did HL2 offer? 15 hours worth of single player with a simple storyline and access to some HL2 mods that no one ever plays. What did HL2 add on to HL1? Just better graphics and a few new weapons to play with.
Not that I am saying HL2 sucks but I am just comparing with SC1 > SC2 with HL1 > HL2. No one bashed HL2 and said it was "lawl, HL1 with just better graphics". "HL2 offered a new engine for mods to work on", SC2 will offer that as well. WC3 did amazing things with allow players with a powerful map editor. SC2 will possibly be even better.
Bashing SC2 and saying its simply "Starcraft 1 with better graphics", <b>this early</b>, is just being stupid.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> What did HL2 offer? 15 hours worth of single player with a simple storyline and access to some HL2 mods that no one ever plays. HL2 was kind of a disappointment. Did any good mods even come out for it yet, save The Hidden?

it seems like most of the people who are griping out SC2 are griping just to gripe. the arguments are all basically the same, "blizzard didnt make the game that i wanted, and my demands must be met for me to stop b****ing!"
whats sad is this game they desire isnt even a game blizzard would or could make (mmofpsrtscivbuilderwankoff) they just want "innovation" and when they get it they would gripe because the innovation they get was forced out and ended up being utter crap to play. you cant demand innovation. it will come when its good and ready. until then, cram it in your cramhole, and either dont grief or dont post.
edit: and for those who are saying stuff life "blah blah they just added in 4 new units and its the same game blah blah" this is an alpha build. and this is a teaser for the alpha build. blizzard didnt keep this a secret for 4 years so they can show you every new detail of a game in one day. theres going to be more info coming from now until it comes out.

Another reason I am glad they haven't deviated too far from the theme of SC1, is that I <3 the Korean pro-gaming scene... Hopefully, many of them will make the switch when SC1 comes out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Anyhow, it's interesting comparing the casual boards with the hardcore boards. For every person screaming "OMG WHERZ THE INNOVATIONZZZZZZZ???!111111" theres another person crying "WTHUX ?!?! THEY KILLED SC".
EDIT
For those of you that arent sick of seeing the trailers 3x already <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />, heres a HIGH RES collection of all videos:

Actually, in the Q&A, only the protoss have a "superweapon". The others have ways to counter it, and multiple "Oh holy awesome" weapons, but they said they didn't have them.
it looks like they took the units that the game HAS to have, like zealots, marines, siege tanks, zerglings, i would imagine hydras and mutas, and some others, and expanded on what they can do and what else there is. perfect recipe for another starcraft.
and if you dont like starcraft, or RTSs in general, then you dont need to come around here griefing and claiming it sucks.

Bad example as Warcraft 3 sucked.
But the point of a sequel is to evolve how the game plays, not just add prettier graphics. I expected Blizzard to add something to encourage new strategies besides new units and encourage some player ingenuity. So far, noting.

I'm hardly whining. I don't particularly care either way.
This works though, haha.
Blizzard is definitely the best at making cinematic. Hands down.

No guts, No glory.

They'll be right there, making sure that when the genre's innovators don't do it right, Blizzard will.

HL2 was kind of a disappointment. Did any good mods even come out for it yet, save The Hidden?
whats sad is this game they desire isnt even a game blizzard would or could make (mmofpsrtscivbuilderwankoff) they just want "innovation" and when they get it they would gripe because the innovation they get was forced out and ended up being utter crap to play. you cant demand innovation. it will come when its good and ready. until then, cram it in your cramhole, and either dont grief or dont post.
edit: and for those who are saying stuff life "blah blah they just added in 4 new units and its the same game blah blah" this is an alpha build. and this is a teaser for the alpha build. blizzard didnt keep this a secret for 4 years so they can show you every new detail of a game in one day. theres going to be more info coming from now until it comes out.
I still say they should have gone with Rock and Roll Racing 2.

No: EA has been an innovator for the MMORTSFPS genre since Battlefield 1942 and has been screwing it up right up until 2142, so where is Blizzards response to this? Nowhere to be found. In the time that it took EA to screw up 4 titles already Blizzard has just <b>started</b> working on SC2, in the time it will take EA to screw up another 4 releases, Blizzard will just be releasing SC2. By the time Blizzard gets around to righting EA's (or any company's) wrongs in the MMORTSFPS genre, chances are that company will have outmastered them by then. GG Blizzard.

So you say, you'd rather have 8 screwed up games than 1 good one? Because, people will always play the game that is more fun, even if it takes two years longer to make.
