A T rating encompass more potential buyers then an M rating. That being said, I guess that most of those 13-16 year olds are probably purchasing games for their console. Seeing that NS2 is launching on Steam, a good portion of customers will be of the mature age range.
I know none of the statistics, they are hard to come by. Theres a few research company's that have reports on sales figures/age groups/consoles...but they cost a hefty penny.
It's a difficult decision for UWE, but I'm sure they have access to figures and other material.

If religion is being categorized with political correctness, God help us all....
Anyways, this isn't a moral debate so much as people saying they want it to be Mature. Just because a game is Mature-rated does NOT mean it is better; only harder to acquire. (That is, unless you're willing to admit you're twisted / perverted.) Also, as was even said by you, M-rated games are often not purchased by the religious consumers.

Same with the crowbar in HL1.
Ragdolls are great for this. Dismemberments would also be nice. Being able to chomp on a marine corpse, tearing appart every single organ before squishing them would be even nicer. I'd love having my skulk model totally red after a good feast, leaving trails of dripping blood when i walk away, chuckling.
But i doubt that will happen. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> It would eat up a good chunk (huhu) of engine ressources, i guess.

but you do raise a valid point, i cant think of any other game where you can properly dismember anyone. i'm sure if they did release this into the game, they would have hordes of teenagers buying it, for the pure fact that it contains more gore than any other game. the fade should be able to rip people to shreads, onos should crush and squish marines, and of course, skulks should be able to bite of chunks of flesh - in a perfect world.
but of course this would raise the age restriction, preventing a lot of other people from playing it.
maybe some crafty bugger could create a plugin upon release?

Corrected for accuracy.
I think the best compromise is to make it a toggle-like setting or sell a Teen rated version but you can download the gore pack if you want to. Perhaps something like that... but I would like to see locational damage, off topic a bit I know.

Mods can the effect ratings as seen with GTA:SA and Oblivion.
I love the idea of being able to drag a marine off into a vent or down a hall. And lets be honest it doesn’t have to be gory, it might not be as realistic, but the world of NS is science FICTION, not science FACT.
A Skulk could drag a marine off with its mouth, but there might not be any blood, or maybe very little. Maybe it’s very hard for the skulk to move him, but a group of skulks can do it together, and a fade can do it easily, and then think of an onos with a ragdoll marine! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tiny.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::onos::" border="0" alt="tiny.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> But what would an onos be like as a ragdoll? Ahhh I love ragdoll...
Oh, but just imagine being a marine and having to shoot a skulk off your leg or your head, lol. ‘Bite and hold on’ could be a secondary fire option for skulks, maybe?
The point is you don’t have to actually make chunks of a person fall off or blood spray everywhere when you shoot/knife/bite them. You don’t have to include it and it will still be a good game, with a similar effect and game play.
Personally though I think a little bit of blood/gore in a game (not in real life) is a good thing. A computer game is escapism, we go into it to do things we can’t or wouldn’t do in real life, I hope you all remember that when you are thinking about how you would love or hate to see a marine have his leg chomped off.

There's a mod for Oblivion that adds dismemberment.
