NS Doesn't Work in Offline Mode

Hi There

I seem to be unable to host a game of Natural Selection whilst my steam is in off line mode? Why is this? It's rather frustrating as I don't have broadband so I can't play online, it seems as though I need to be connected to the internet for something as simple as playing against AI, running a LAN game or whenever I want to try make a map?

Is this a bug in my installation or a security measure against piracy? If it's the latter then why is it stopping me from playing seeing as how I have a genuine steam installation and CD-Key for Half-Life 1? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Define "doesn't work" (specifics man! We can't do anything with out you actually explaining what is going on.)

    Also:

Is your HL install all the way up to date? (connect steam to the internet and then try running HL, just ot make sure it is fully patched).

The problem he is experiencing is the "Cannot locate steam user ticket thingy"

This is because you aren't connected to a network, therefore you cannot create a LAN game.

What happens is that you get the loading screen (Preaching resources. etc) but then suddenly it returns to the title screen? Amirite?

    One solution:

    You need

    Network Cable.

    Another PC

Connect the two cables trough the ports and get a "Local Connection".
Now you can play as much as you want, so long the Local Connection is online.

    EDIT:

Oh yeah, and HatlabuFarkas. Do not prompt the use of pirated versions of Half-Life. It's illegal.
$10 is not a high price to pay for a great game such as HL and NS.

    And:

Your Post describes how to play the OLD versions of NS on a LAN, and does not contain ANY helpful info.

While I can't speak for LAN games with much authority, I'm on dialup so I do most of my map testing offline.

Make sure steam stays up-to-date. So long as steam loads, you can run NS offline. This may require you to connect to the internet once in a while so that steam can update itself.

Load up NS, and instead of pressing the "create game" button or whatever, you open your console and load the map directly. ie. "map co_core" (without quotes). sv_cheats 1, developer 2, etc, and voila. Map tested.

To play against bots, (and I imagine run a LAN server) when you first start the game, you'll need to be connected to the internet. Start a server (via the button instead of the console), NS will talk to Steam about getting a server going, Steam will talk to the Valve servers, and the valve servers will reply back giving you a ticket of sorts that says "ya okay you're fine go ahead", (all of this is automagic and transparent mind you) then you can disconnect from the internet and play all you want (just remember to use "changelevel co_core" instead of "map co_core" so as to keep that ticket valve gave you. (Of course, if you went about installing bots, why not go a step further and just put AMXX on as well?) A bit of a PITAbread, but this is Steam's doing moreso than the NS dev's. And really, even further, it's the people who insist on using pirated copies of the game's doing that brought about this baloney that the rest of us legitimate folks have to deal with this crap now.

Your other option is to play 1.04 on a WON version of halflife...

This sums it up quite nicely:

Otherwise my HL is completely up to date.

BigD what did you mean by the following? For what reason should I put on AMXX?

Go into steam/steamapps/username/half-life/ns and open listenserver.cfg

    make sv_lan 0
