Nil_IQ was joking/sarcastic.
The interwebs nowadays, you should always expect sarcastic/jokingly remarks, posts, etc.
We need sarcasm/joke tags in forums. Without actually saying it is sarcasm but notifying you it is sarcasm. Like all green font = sarcasm.

Yeah, that works.
I was pointing out the retardation of the fact that it is seemingly impossible for anything to be an accident anymore. Nothing is ever "just an accident" anymore. If someone spills coffee on their lap, SUE! Its the restaurant's fault! If you trip over in the street, SUE! Its the government's fault for not properly maintaining the street!
So basically, I would be very suprised if SOMEONE doesn't try to sue over this.
Someone will, and they'll win. Now, I'll think that they are both idiots (school and prosecutors) but its better that the school learns their damn lesson.

You know that McDonalds coffee thing is even stupider when you read into it. I heard "she spilt coffee while in a car" so I thought, y'know, whatever. Maybe the coffee was dangerously hot. But:
She was in the passenger seat The coffee was between her knees The car had pulled over and was stopped The coffee is served at a high temperature, but it is also the "recommended" temperature for coffee: "The National Coffee Association recommends coffee be brewed at "between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal extraction" and drunk "immediately". If not drunk immediately, it should be "maintained at 180-185 degrees Fahrenheit."" (source here) She did require "two years of treatment" to overcome the burns, though. But seriously, I've had a freshly made cup of coffee (about 10 seconds after being poured out of the kettle, no milk etc...) literally poured over my back before (person carrying it tripped) and it hurt but.... not for more than an hour.
Back on topic:
I would probably take some form of legal action if it were my kid(s) (I don't have kids but I'm acting as if I do, this is the internet). Not because I thought that the money would help my kids get over it, but because there's a certain amount of trust involved in the teachers of a school, that they'll look after your kids. Creating a situation where they think they're probably going to be gunned down, then *told it's real*, is a serious betrayal of that. And frankly, "We're sorry, it was stupid" wouldn't cut it with me.
